Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
The image required for the article is an official company logo, so it is not possible to replace it with a free content image, either existing or one that might otherwise be created. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The file will be used as the primary means of visual identification in the Dark Horse Records article. The entire work is needed both to avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the intended image, and to accurately convey the company's highly individual logo, which reflected George Harrison's spirituality and, in the case of Dark Horse signing Ravi Shankar, Harrison's preferred style of music. The image is of low resolution and inadequate for creating illegal copies of the work that would affect the interests of the copyright holder. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
The file is being used in an encyclopedic article dedicated to educational discussion of the company Dark Horse Records. The copyright holder's interests will not be aversely affected since the image is of low resolution, preventing quality reproduction of the logo for commercial or other purposes. |

Low resolution? |

Purpose of use |
For use in the article's "Recording" section. The image is used to support discussion of the drawn-out recording for George Harrison's 1974 single "Dark Horse". The record label was named after this 1973 composition, and the launch took place midway through the year-long production for the song and its parent album, Dark Horse. In addition, the main purpose of the Harrison–Shankar North American tour accompanying the single's release was to establish Dark Horse Records and promote one of the label's first releases, the Shankar Family & Friends album. As discussed in the article's Recording and Reception sections, Dark Horse Records had a significant impact on the quality of the released recording of "Dark Horse" and on its commercial and critical reception, due to Harrison's dedication to setting up the label and supporting its initial signings. Harrison's exhaustion through his having overextended himself on these projects had a detrimental effect on his health, which in turn had a profound impact on his solo career as a whole. The synonymity between "Dark Horse" and the record company is a well-established part of the song's legacy, as discussed by Harrison himself on a number of occasions, and in depth by authors such as Simon Leng (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, 2006, ISBN 1-4234-0609-5), Mikal Gilmore (Harrison: By the Editors of Rolling Stone, 2002, ISBN 0-7432-3581-9), Bob Woffinden (The Beatles Apart, 1981, ISBN 0-906071-89-5), Nicholas Schaffner (The Beatles Forever, 1978, ISBN 0-07-055087-5), Robert Rodriguez (Fab Four FAQ 2.0: The Beatles' Solo Years, 1970–1980, 2010, ISBN 978-1-4165-9093-4) and Chip Madinger and Mark Easter (Eight Arms to Hold You: The Solo Beatles Compendium, 2000, ISBN 0-615-11724-4). |
Replaceable? |
Because it is a non-free logo, there is almost certainly no free representation. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary. |
