DescriptionDepiction of the Valuev Circular at a performance against Russification of Ukraine.jpg |
English: A girl with a "stitched mouth" holds an imitation of the Valuev Circular during a theatrical performance against the Russification of Ukraine.
The demonstration took place on Bankova Street, near the Administration of the President of Ukraine, on the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, in 2015. Its participants demanded to take legislative measures to protect the Ukrainian language in Ukraine. The organizer was the Civic Movement Vidsich. During the performance, characters such as Russian tsars (Peter I, Anna Ioannovna, Catherine II), the Russian imperial minister Pyotr Valuev, and the dictator of the USSR Joseph Stalin, who became famous for the Russification of Ukraine and the suppression of the Ukrainian language, praised and thanked the then Ukrainian government for continuing their policy regarding the Ukrainian language. Behind each of the characters, an activist with a "stitched mouth" held an imitation of one of the historical documents certifying the Ukrainophobic policy implemented by these officials. Several activists held posters with infographics about the oppressed position of the Ukrainian language in the media sphere of Ukraine or with calls for legislative protection of the Ukrainian language. A "Soviet schoolgirl" was moderating the event as the symbol of the Russification of Ukraine in the USSR. |
