esent division. OTHER INDIAN TROUBLES. Before leaving this part of the narrative, we will narrate briefly theIndian troubles in Minnesota and elsewhere by the Sioux Indians. In August, 1862, the Sioux Indians living on the western borders ofMinnesota fell upon the unsuspecting settlers, and in a few hours mas-sacred ten or twelve hundred persons. A distressful panic was theimmediate result, fully thirty thousand persons fleeing from their homesto districts supposed to be better protected. The military authoritiesat once took active measures to punish the savages, and a large numberwere killed and captured. About a year after, Little Crow, the chief,was killed by a Mr. Lampson near Scattered Lake. Of those captured,thirty were hung at Mankato, and the remainder, through fears of mobviolence, were removed to Camp McClellan, on the outskirts of the Cityof Davenport. It was here that Big Eagle came into prominence andsecured his release by the following order: 80 TFTE NORTHWEST TERRITORY.
