Summary

Description
English: Numbers can be typeset in two ways. They can be set proportionally, with the width of the character depending on its shape (1 narrow, 9 wide), which means less empty space on the page and better-flowing text. Or all numerals can have the same width, ensuring that lines of numbers line up together one on top of another. This is essential for typesetting sums and price lists. This picture shows number glyphs from the font Palatino, with proportional on the left. Both sets are lining figures, numerals which are the same height as upper-case letters.
