English: Curcuma longa. Common names: turmeric, kunyit.
This perennial plant from the ginger family is native to south/southeast Asia. It is also known as yellow ginger because of its orange-yellow rhizome.
Turmeric had been used as a substitute for saffron, and was known as Indian saffron. It can be boiled, dried, peeled or ground. Turmeric is used to flavour all kinds of dishes, and is an essential ingredient of curry powder.
In India, turmeric is used to dye textiles into deep rich yellow. It is also used in the traditional medicinal practices of many Asian cultures, including Ayurvedic medicine and jamu concoctions.
