Citations needed?
editIn the following, what information needs a citation?
A flint mine may be as simple as a pit on the surface or an area of quarrying but it usually refers to a series of shafts and tunnels used to extract flint.[citation needed]
The "claim" that the term "flint mine" usually refers to shaft and tunnel mining? I think that a quick search on Google of the places listed lower down on the page will show that only a few of them use surface mining techniques.
What needs a citations here?
Flint mines have been in use since the Palaeolithic but were most common during the Neolithic. Although flint is not as valuable a resource in modern times, a few flint mines remain in operation even today.[citation needed]
The fact that flint as valuable in modern times? OR the fact that a few flint mines are still in operation today? The person who requested this citation is a geologist so he should know that flint mines are still exploited today. (The flint is used for cheap industrial grinding purposes, not for making hand axes.) Besides, there is one in the list on the same page. I think that anyone with common sense will agree (even without a citation) that flint doesn't have the same value today that it had in prehistory.

- All information added to Wikipedia needs a source. Even if we "know" some fact and it seems obvious, it still needs a reliable source. Your or my "common sense" is not a reliable source. Specifically, a source is needed for the "usually refers to shaft and tunnel mining" bit, a google search is not a source. Second: yes - what "flint mines" are still in operation today? If it's for "cheap industrial grinding purposes" then state that with a source. And are the modern ones "mines" or "quarries"? The article has no references and that needs correcting - I added the tags for specifics rather than a general unreferenced banner. Please supply sources as requested plus more. - The list also needs references as most of the linked sites say nothing about flint mines. Vsmith (talk) 12:27, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
