Multi-domed churches

edit

Hmm...have you checked out the early Byzantine Hagia Sophia (particularly the 3rd pic), Basilica of San Vitale and generally the Cross-in-square design? I believe you need to narrow down the concept further, because churches with more than one dome were clearly typically of Byzantine architecture hundreds of years before they were emulated by the Rus.

I have also my issues with the invention of the onion dome, an English-language reliable source explicitly crediting the Russians would certainly help. But your efforts towards an impartial listing are, contrary to many others of these lists, palpable, so good job so far. Regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 13:48, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

As far as I understand, in their early churches the Byzantines used either half-domes (ru:Конха) or dome vaults that were non-visible or barely visible from the exterior. So indeed it may be the question of rather subtle distinctions when we talk of the introduction of the multi-domed church, but I can't just now find good wording for the invention to reflect this narrower sense.
Regarding onion domes, the studies that suggest their usage already in the 13th century (based on the icon depictions) are relatively recent, and I am not sure whether these information can be easily found in the reliable English sources. The corresponding Russian sources are quite reliable, and according to them the invention of the onion dome in Russia precedes its appearance in Mughal India, which seems to be the next closest contender. Why "innovations" and not inventions?

edit

There is a Timeline_of_United_States_inventions (multiple, in fact). Note the inventions, not innovations. I see this article was merged years ago with an actual Russian inventions article. Why is that? Why is there a list of inventions for the United States, and a list of "innovations" (whatever that is!) for Russia? IndyCar1020 (talk) 14:04, 24 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

This page is a mixture of world's firsts inventions invented in Russia and general Russian timeline. Perhaps it should be split (again)? Darrelljon (talk) 10:43, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kyivan Rus' is not Russia.

edit

Rather, it is more Ukrainian than Russian. I suggest a review of the "Kievan Rus'" paragraph and a historically accurate rewritten version of it.
