References
editYou have made a couple of edits which claim to add columns to the reference section. I can't see any difference. Does this only work on some systems? Rmhermen 18:01, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yep, take a look at today's featured article, Slate industry in Wales; The same code exists in it's references section. It's pretty common among the featured articles as we can't use the col-start, col-break and col-end on the collected references. Technically, it's code from CSS3. It'll display in Firefox, but not Internet Explorer. --Brad Beattie (talk) 23:19, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Tanzan Shrine
editHi, Brad thanks for the Kemari pics, one of which I have added to Football. Regarding Tanzan Shrine, I just noticed that Sakurai, Nara has a link to Danzan Shrine. I guess this may be a Japanese-to-English transliteration issue(?) Thought you might like to know. Grant65 | Talk 14:30, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey Grant. I'm glad you like the photos. I have plenty more if needs be. :) As for Danzan, yeah, that's a translation quirk. I've fixed the link on the Sakurai page in the event we ever want to create an article on Tanzan Shrine. There are also some photos of the shrine on my photography page as a foresight. --Brad Beattie (talk) 14:34, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds perfect. I'm not a Japanese speaker or expert in Japanese culture so I will defer to the experts in this. Grant65 | Talk 02:16, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- I checked with a native Japanese speaker today and apparently both are okay, Danzan might even be better. However, the pamphlet from the actual shrine said Tanzan. Ugh. How about we just stick with Tanzan and redirect Danzan to Tanzan? --Brad Beattie (talk) 02:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, just to clarify: I don't speak Japanese. :) I just happen to live here and therefore have access to those who do. --Brad Beattie (talk) 02:27, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!
editWelcome, BradBeattie, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.
Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.
In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.
If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

AfD: Arthur, King of Time and Space
editI'd like to invite you to visit the site and sample the strip at various points in its history. I don't expect to make you abandon your "master-plan" to cleanse Wiki~'s comics covergae, but I do hope to persuade you that this is not a fly-by-night job, adn that the lack of references is probably becausde this is art for art's sake, not art to get the critics babbling about it. Respecfully, Simon Cursitor
- I took a look at the site when I nominated earlier today. I'll take another look, but I'm pretty sure the AFD process will give the article a fair case. --Brad Beattie (talk) 15:10, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- Respectfully, I've no doubt it will. However, the AfD process replies, as far as I can see, on nominations, and then the ascription of many contrary views to sockpuppets, ballot-stuffing (and of course AfD ins't a vote) and the like. I was merely hoping that, on reflection, you would either withdraw the nomination, or at least temper your criticism with an acknowledgement that some people may hear of it and come to Wiki~ for more information. Yes, if Wiki~ had a dedicated comix-sub, I'd vote for the article at this length to go there, and a summary remain here. But it doesn't and can't. Sorry to use up your talk-space, but this is one I feel highly about. -- Simon Cursitor
- Yeah, I can understand and respect the position that people come to Wikipedia for information, but I have concerns about the notability of many articles that currently exist here. To draw a hyperbole, I'm sure some people have heard of my friend's self-published CD of music, but I wouldn't suggest that it have a page here on Wikipedia. It's all about Notability.
- As for the comics, it just so happens that I'm focusing my attention on them first; it's not a specific agenda against that topic. I guess one of the best places to take your concerns about stubs would be WP:COMIC's talk page. I went there a week ago on the subject of Keenspot and Comic Genesis and the discussion was rather fruitful. --Brad Beattie (talk) 15:30, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Sorry Brad, I accidentally inserted a comment between your comment and your signature on the AfD page. That was a bit clumsy of me. (I even previewed, too! And, yes, I really will get a username someday, I promise.) I considered fixing it, but I'd rather not clutter up the history page any further – feel free to tweak it if you like.68.250.175.194 21:53, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
I share your concerns about letting in things of trivial notability, but I also really worry about the integrity of the AfD process when webcomics are involved. I don't see a good objective measure that draws a bright line between notable and almost-notable webcomics, that also consistently includes webcomics we subjectively know are important. I've read and thought about WP:WEB quite a bit, and I'm not trying to debate it, I'm just worried about the outcome for webcomics as a class. (Comics that have print analogs seem easier to deal with for obvious reasons.) In your opinion, is there room in Wikipedia for subjective evaluations of notability?68.250.175.194 21:53, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Hrosvit
editDear BradBeattie,
an extreme edit of Hrosvit took place on 20:26, 13 November. I replaced the erased links to other languages and external sources. Although I have contributed to Wikipedia on and off for the past few months, I don't know how to react to this...a fairly good medium-sized biography suddenly lost over half of its content. Could you look at the situation? Thank you. Robertwalton 23:15, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Tagging orphaned images
editHey there... You should only be tagging images with {{subst:orfud}} when the image is copyrighted and when it is not used in an article. Images that are tagged as public domain or released under the GFDL do not qualify for the speedy tag. ORFUD stands for orphaned fair use deletion. I am going to reverse your tagging on the images.--Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr.) 14:04, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Osaka Art Museum, and other edits
editThank you for your input on the additonal information I added to several Japanese articles. The information that was partially transcribed, and was also rewritten was extracted from Press Releases issued by the entities involved. A Press Release from the architect of the Osaka Museum, whose office is in CT, was also sent out regarding this project a number of times to trade journals and art institutions. If the information is contained, verbatim in a Press Release, I had thought that meant it was intended to be re-published. I am most appreciative of your comments. Thank-you (Dommo arrigato gozimasta). — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissionCreek (talk • contribs)
Polynomial
editHi, thanks for your image. However, the reason why my image had no labels and was rather simple was to enable the illustration of the basic shapes of certain polynomials without distracting features. Your image looks a little out of place now on the polynomial article – scroll down to the part where there's a whole lot of them. Let me know what you think. I guess a way forward would be to recreate the rest of them? Of course, the best option would be to create new ones in SVG format instead of new ones in PNG. Cheers. enochlau (talk) 23:34, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hrm, yeah. I see what you mean. Certainly there's a need for consistency as it does look a little out of place right now. Obviously I'm going to have a bit of bias in the one I created, but I think that labeling the axes gives a more complete graph without adding too much to the complexity of the image. I'll revert my change for now just as a matter of consistency. As for SVG images, that would be awesome, but I don't have any tools with which to make them. Know any good ones out there? --Brad Beattie (talk) 01:03, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've toyed with Inkscape before, but I'm not that good at using it. Since we want pictures of real polynomials, you'd have to find some kind of way to put the bitmap graphs into the program and tracing over it with vector lines. enochlau (talk) 03:32, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Another thing: usually, when you create a new version of an image, if it's completely new remake of it, you should upload it under a different filename. Uploading on top of an old image usually only occurs for direct enhancements on the original image. enochlau (talk) 09:00, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Popups and reverting vandalism
editHey, thanks for pitching in on the ever-present defense from vandalism. Look out for popups though as it occassionally reverts to the wrong revision. Hmm, slight problem, I'm still working on OS X 10.3... I must upgrade soon! Budgiekiller 08:12, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Ah! That would be an issue. The app uses Core Data, which requires 10.4 if I'm not mistaken. Ah well, the thought was nice anyway. :) --Brad Beattie (talk) 08:15, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
