Infoboxes with indic script
editPlease see discussion at Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics#Indic scripts in lead, WP:INDICSCRIPT is about lead sentence not infoboxes. --Bejnar (talk) 09:59, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough, I was really just following the established consensus on the page. I don't have any particular opinion on the matter. Dendrite1 (talk) 12:25, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. The actual consensus was about the lead sentence, not infoboxes, and about people articles, not geographic ones. But, alls well that ends well. --Bejnar (talk) 19:05, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Oymyakon
editHi there. I see you reverted this edit. The only reason I reverted the edit previously was because the editor "173.227.104.206" stated "the NASA satellite temperature is NOT considered the record low since it was not based on a ground thermometer reading". I have no idea if this is correct, and many of that editor's edits have been reverted. I just want to make sure that both the "Verkhoyansk" and "Oymyakon" articles have the same correct information. If you are expert in this (I'm not) it would be great if you could check that. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 13:45, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not an expert (although I do have a scientific background, but that's irrelevant) but consensus in other articles such as List of weather records and Lowest temperature recorded on Earth is that the new satellite-based records are to be treated as unofficial, and not really comparable to surface-based records. The reason for this is that the comparison of satellite measurements to ground-based thermometer observations is an apples-to-oranges sort of comparison - satellite temperature measurements may either measure the surface directly, or a column of air extending above the ground - and this distinction is important because the temperature may vary quite considerably depending on height above the ground; often temperatures at the ground are several degrees Celsius lower or higher than those at the height of the thermometer in the weather station (which is typically 1-2 meters above the ground). The WMO source I linked to in the articles [1] has this to say:
Although claims of a "world-record coldest temperature" have been made for a remote-sensed location in Antarctica, the WMO official coldest temperature remains -89.2°C (-128.5°F) recorded on 21/7/1983 at Vostok, Antarctica. Official weather measurements are made at using standard equipment at a fixed height of between 1.25 m (4 ft 1 in) and 2 m (6 ft 7 in) above the ground for a fixed location over a specific length-of-record. Remoted-sensed values of temperature are not at this time regarded as official weather measurements.
- It might be reasonable to include the satellite-based measurements in the articles as well, but they would need to be clearly distinguished from the ground-based measurement at Vostok Station, which is more comparable to the measurements originally made at Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk. Thank you for your interest! Dendrite1 (talk) 10:50, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Contests
editUser:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. As someone who has previously expressed interest in African topics, would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. If interested please sign up in the participants section of the Contest page, thanks.♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:15, 21 July 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Hachijō-jima
editOn 27 April 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hachijō-jima, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when Ulysses S. Grant visited the island of Hachijō-jima in 1877, he was ceremonially adopted by the village chief and given a name meaning "courageous general" in the local dialect? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hachijō-jima. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Hachijō-jima), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
