Please use this page for discussions surrounding the creation of "Today's Featured Picture" for April Fool's day 2011
Areas of work needed to complete the front page are:
- Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Featured Article
- Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Today's Featured Picture
- Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/On This Day
- Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/In The News
- Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know
Ground rules for this activity along with a list or participants may be found on the Main talk page.
The Mission
editIn order to get a funny/unusual Featured picture onto the front page, it must be both a great picture and be used in a Wikipedia article.
Action Items
edit- What picture? We need to nominate some and vote on them.
- Whatever we choose has to be used in an actual Wikipedia article. Can we write an article that NEEDS a WikiWorld cartoon? Maybe Greg Williams (who draws them for us) is sufficiently notable that we could write a short Bio article on him and illustrate it with a WikiWorld cartoon? Maybe WikiWorld in itself is notable (it's a bit of a self-ref...but maybe that's OK considering that we only need it to get the image accepted).
- If we choose to use a WikiWorld cartoon - maybe we want Greg to draw us one especially for the day?
- We have to usher it through the nomination process and make sure it actually does get onto the front page on April 1st.
- Rule: Pictures appear on the main page only once, so they cannot have been used on the main page before.
Proposed Images
edit- Image 1 - crashed train
ineligible - not a featured picture Modest Genius talk 23:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
This has potential, no? Dave (talk) 22:19, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, not a Featured Picture, and not likely to pass either (too small). howcheng {chat} 22:33, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
There was a picture of a locomotive crashing through a wall that we had at FP. Nergaal (talk) 16:42, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- File:Train wreck at Montparnasse 1895.jpg? That is an FP, but has already been on the Main Page. Modest Genius talk 23:18, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'd prefer not to poke fun of events where people died. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:58, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Image 2 - Uranus
Just saw this was promoted to Featured.... a picture of Uranus! a little childish i know, but actualy a pretty important image captured by Voyager--Found5dollar (talk) 02:57, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
- What's funny about this picture? Modest Genius talk 19:33, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- The name, I think... wackywace 14:29, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes the name is the humoreous part. I can see tons of blogs talking about how Wikipedia has put up a picture of Uranus(youranus) on the front page!.--Found5dollar (talk) 17:02, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- Proposed caption:
- Classified as a "gas giant", your anus has been studied by the world's scientists since its discovery. An inspection in the 1980s revealed an irregular structure and the presence of multiple nearby objects, orbiting your anus because of its immense size. A belt is in place around your anus, but researchers are unsure how it stays in place.
- Comments, tweaks, etc are welcome. I understand this is a bit childish, but I just wanted to give us something to consider. Jujutacular talk 17:52, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- Is childish necessarily what we want? I'd prefer more clever if anything (My preferences is for image 3, given a suitable caption- I'll try to come up with something). SpencerT♦C 05:50, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Yea, I think it's funny but probably too crude for the main page. I'd definitely like to see a good caption for image 3. Jujutacular talk 12:43, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

- This is taken almost verbatim from various parts of the lead to the Uranus article...
- "Discovered by Sir William Herschel, on March 13, 1781, Uranus is a gas giant visible to the naked eye. Uranus's atmosphere contains volatiles such as water, ammonia and methane while the interior is made of both ice and rock. Like the other giants, Uranus has a ring system, and numerous moons. Seen from Earth, these rings can sometimes appear to circle Uranus like an archery target."--Found5dollar (talk) 15:49, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Making an anus joke about Uranus is crass, childish and completely unfunny. It's the sort of thing 12 year olds laugh at. There's no way we should be doing so. Modest Genius talk 23:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- Too crass. Royalbroil 05:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- "Your Anus" is not even the correct pronunciation. --76.124.53.220 (talk) 02:37, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
- Image 3 - The Ugly Duchess
Ummm... I think we have a winner....--Found5dollar (talk) 16:24, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
- I like the image, but I'm not sure how we would caption it humorously. Jujutacular talk 18:17, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- Easy:
- A 1513 portrait of an unknown Duchess, possibly Margaret, Countess of Tyrol, by Flemish painter Quentin Matsys. She holds a red flower in her right hand, at the time a symbol of engagement, indicating that she is trying to attract a suitor. This portrait inspired the appearance of the Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The portrait is Matsys' best-known work, and formed half of a diptych. The painting hangs in the National Gallery in London.
- or something similar, it maybe needs an extra sentence for length. Modest Genius talk 23:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- Blurb expanded with an extra two sentences. Modest Genius talk 00:41, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- This is my favorite so far. Royalbroil 05:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- The cited source for the bit about Margaret, Countess of Tyrol seems to make no mention of the countess. Jujutacular talk 23:42, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
- Good spot. I managed to find an old NYT article which includes the claim (which I added to the article), though a more modern source would be good. Modest Genius talk 00:32, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks MG, this is my favorite at the moment for April 1 then. Jujutacular talk 00:39, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

- Image 4 - Animal headed people
I imagine someone can come up with a clever caption for this. Makeemlighter (talk) 20:16, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- Image 5 - Flayed horse and rider
Some caption about knights or chivalry etc to go with this? Might be a bit gruesome for some tastes. Modest Genius talk 23:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, too gruesome for me. Royalbroil 05:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- I think this one is better for Halloween. Spongie555 (talk) 23:25, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

my selection I prefer not to use my regular username due to the desire anonymity in my selection. I've been registered on my other username for 6 years. maybe some caption about saltpeter or fertilizer--Fedebea (talk) 02:57, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
- This image was suggested last year. There's a minimum level of decorum required to be on the main page, so this one won't appear and the urinating woman won't appear. Royalbroil 00:35, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- Um, I think what you mean to say, and please do correct me if I'm wrong, is that in your opinion these two pictures are not what you think should be on the front page, right? To quote a very wise man speaking on becoming an admin "Contrary to what some people believe, it does not mean that my opinion means more than anyone else's". So please, mark down your vote as oppose and let other people vote how they wish. I for one, vote support for this picture. It's a little childish to laugh a bird pooing, but that it what April Fool's is all about. Aaadddaaammm (talk) 22:03, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- I actually think it's funny and I personally would like to see it being used. Howcheng schedules what runs on the main page, and he vetoed it in 2009. I understand that viewpoint too and it is very childish. So I oppose. Royalbroil 00:29, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

What isn't funny about a woman squatting on the street?!?! Aaadddaaammm (talk) 13:45, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Note
editIf the proposal for a new Featured Sound on the main page pans out and is implemented before April 1st, two images may need to be chosen...--Found5dollar (talk) 21:40, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'd suggest File:Field cricket Gryllus pennsylvanicus.ogg, with a caption saying it's a "reaction to today's hilarious jokes". Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:22, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'll suggest File:DescenteInfinie.ogg with the caption "A standard speaker test, properly functioning speakers should produce a low uniform hum" (Sound and caption was proposed by User:Sven Manguard here before his retirement) --Guerillero | My Talk 02:36, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
