editRao Sahib
editI would like to add Rao Sahib Vellore Gangadhara Ranganathan, Assistant Surgeon, Veloo Mudaliar Dispensary, who was awarded the title of Rao Sahib by F.M. Wavell, Viceroy of Indian in 1946. I have a copy of the SANAD as well as a photo of his medal with the inscription of Rao Sahib — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jazzy350 (talk • contribs) 09:51, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jazzy350: Hello, if you mean you would like to see an article about this person, please study the links that were left at your talk page (actually in 2013). You will need to determine whether the person passes Wikipedia's notability criteria; if you are of the opinion that they do then please reveiw the guide to article creation and a useful further guide can be found here. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this:
~~~~
. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you for wanting to improve the encyclopedia. Eagleash (talk) 10:59, 23 October 2020 (UTC)- @Jazzy350: Also asked and answered at WP:TH#Rao Sahib Title in British India. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 17:45, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
Contests
editI've seen some contests here in Wikipedia and noticed some editors join in. Where and how can I join as well? Are there such right now and is it reserved to certain people only? Thanks. Bekkadn (talk) 11:07, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- If this is about Wikipedia:CONTEST that is a defunct Wikiproject. If not, perhaps you could link to an example of what you mean.--Shantavira|feed me 14:35, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Bekkadn, you may be thinking of something like the WikiCup, which is almost over for this year but will be starting again in January. There are other, more focused competitions periodically. See Category:Wikipedia competitions. Some are run by various Wikiprojects to promote improvement in articles on certain types of subjects. Others focus on various clean-up and maintenance tasks. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 21:04, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
Is there a way to find all of my created templates/navboxes?
editA feature similar to Pages/Articles Created; listing all created templates/navboxes in a single page. --Wario-Man (talk) 12:24, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Wario-Man: The filtering options on the standard "Contributions" page can handle this. These are the pages you've created in the Template namespace. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:33, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Ahh... Thanks! --Wario-Man (talk) 12:44, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Reverting page move
editThere was an AFD for the page Regan Russell, which ended in Keep and consensus, as far as I could tell, to rename the page to Death of Regan Russell. After the AFD, on the Talk Page, I asked if there was now any opposition to renaming the page, since presumably an AFD is not a formal decision to rename. There was none, so I renamed/moved the page. Over a month later, another user undid this renaming without any explanation or discussion (just "article doesn't need "Death of" in title"). I pinged that user on the Talk Page to ask for their reasoning, but they didn't reply. What should I do now? I think there is still a consensus-based decision for the page name Death of Regan Russell because WP:BLP1E clearly applies. Nobody has argued for any notability of this person other than in how they died. Jmill1806 (talk) 12:47, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Jmill1806, you did exactly the right thing by pinging the other editor to talk. As the other editor hasn't responded to your ping in six days but has edited since then, I'd say you can move it back with a careful edit summary (something like "per no response to ping at talk, moving this back; if you disagree, let's discuss"). —valereee (talk) 12:51, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Valereee, greatly appreciated. Moving a page feels like a bigger deal than editing text on a page, so I was hesitant. Jmill1806 (talk) 15:56, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Jmill1806, it is a bit bigger, because it's got a few more moving parts. There are instructions for what you should check to make sure you haven't left a mess behind at Wikipedia:Moving a page. —valereee (talk) 16:10, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Search and replace using regex
editIs it possible to do a search and replace in the wikitext editor which will find missing closing square brackets for a wikilink after a two-word title and add them? example: [[Genus species
There will be a space directly after the second word which can be replaced with ]]
.
I can write the regex to find the string - \[\[\w+\s\w+\s
, but I only want to replace the last space. The search would be used with a whole lot of different combinations of Genus species pairs in the same list. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 13:46, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Pbsouthwood, are you using User:Cacycle/WikEd? I confess I've never used the function you're speaking of (especially to replace), but the default toolbar in the middle is a search toolbar. There is a button (/R/) which allows you to turn the search field into a regular expression. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:53, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Wikitext editor Advanced menu, quizzing glass at far right:
- f:
(\[\[\w+\s+\w+)\s+
- r:
$1]]
- f:
- Check the box at 'Treat search string as a regular expression'
Page URGENTLY needs DELETING
editHello,
I hope you are well.
I am writing as an employee of Central Talent Booking. My employer, Joanna Jordan, has a Wikipedia page about her ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joanna_Jordan_(talent_agent) ). A significant amount of the information on this page is INCORECT and DAMAGING to her reputation. The page must be DELETED IMMEDIATELY.
Please do let me know how to this, ASAP.
Kind regards,
Joely Fox CTB — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoelyFox (talk • contribs) 14:32, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- @JoelyFox: Wikipedia has an article about Joanna Jordan (talent agent), who was considered to be notable (See WP:GNG). We do not delete our articles at the request of the subject. If there is incorrect information in the article, suggest improvements on the article's talk page at Talk:Joanna Jordan (talent agent). Do not make changes yourself, as you are a paid editor. see WP:PAID. You are also required to disclose your paid status. -Arch dude (talk) 15:13, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Do you know how I can find out who the author of the article is? Is it possible for them to delete the article? Can Joanna Jordan herself request for the article to be deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoelyFox (talk • contribs) 15:25, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- JoelyFox, please don't open discussions on multiple forums - this has also been discussed at BLPN. I am leaving you some advice on your user talk page now. GirthSummit (blether) 15:41, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- You can check from the page's history which Wikipedia user created the article. However, by far the most of Wikipedia users use pseudonymous accounts, so it may not be possible for you to know who that person is in real life. It might also be possible for the article creator to nominate the article for deletion - but that's up to them, not to you. And finally, Joanna Jordan herself is in no position of ownership or authority over the article just because she is the subject. She can request for it to be deleted, but that request will almost certainly be denied. JIP | Talk 16:01, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
I've also put some suggestions on your talk page which I hope you will find useful Spinney Hill (talk) 09:40, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
A newly created Wikipedia page does not show up in the Search Engine, and only its Talk Page shows up
editI started editing the article Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon as a draft. The draft was in the queue for 2 months. Within this time, I had auto confirmed status. Therefore, I decided to remove the draft tags from the draft, to make it nonexistent as can be seen in the history of the draft article https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Ainbo:_Spirit_of_the_Amazon&redirect=no. Then I proceeded, to create directly the article in mainspace. The article is called: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ainbo:_Spirit_of_the_Amazon. The article has been reviewed as a start article, and the admin redirected the previous draft to this new article. However, it has been over a week, and the article still isn't showing up in Search Index. The only part that is showing up is the talk page if the search is in Bing. Can any of the admins help in explaining why this happens? Oolaadobe (talk) 17:24, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Oolaadobe, new pages don't get indexed until they are reviewed by new page patrollers or 90 days old, whichever comes first. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:39, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you. Unless the new page patrollers means people other than those who review and place the right designation to the page like Start Class or Stub, I will wait. Otherwise, the page has already been reviewed with a Start Class. But in either case, I will wait for some more time.Oolaadobe (talk) 18:29, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Oolaadobe, Wikipedia:New pages patrol is a process where all new pages are (or should be) checked within 90 days by editors with the new page patroller permission. Any editor can assess an article as Stub or Start class. TSventon (talk) 20:30, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Editors seeking privacy per courtesy vanishing / right to vanish can usually have their accounts renamed and their user pages (and in exceptional cases user talk pages) deleted." Prolific authors
editI am a writer with 488 titles on Google Books (should be over 500 in the next couple months). I got curious, so I checked Wikipedia for a list of prolific writers. I would actually be #31 on that list assuming I qualify. How do I get on that list?
Second question, how could I become a "notable" person of my tiny hometown of Lewistown, Pennsylvania? I am 70 years old and I hope to make that short list while I'm still young. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harold Lerch (talk • contribs) 18:14, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Our metric for prolific writers is intended to measure writers who actually get published. "Self-publishing" on the internet, Amazon, etc. is not the same thing. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:49, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, Harold Lerch. Wikipedia does not, as far as I can see, have an article about you; the presumption therefore is that you do not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability - nearly all lists on Wikipedia are lists of notable items (in Wikipedia's sense). If you do meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then somebody could write an article about you (you are strongly discouraged from doing it yourself), and then you could be added to relevant lists. --ColinFine (talk) 18:55, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- See: WP:Notability (authors) to see if you might qualify for an article. 2606:A000:1126:28D:1DE6:D8D2:3598:9287 (talk) 19:00, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- You should not actively seek to be notable on Wikipedia. Instead, carry on your career as a writer as normal. At some point, someone entirely unconnected to you, with no input from you, will find you notable and write an article about you. JIP | Talk 12:59, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
Move article from sandbox
editI want to move article from sandbox to publish it in wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by NPPA (talk • contribs) 19:23, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- NPPA, unfortunately, the material on your user page was copied from the NPPA website, and cannot become an article, as it's a copyright violation.--Quisqualis (talk) 19:51, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- @NPPA: Usernames can't be for a group account. I left a note on your talk page. You should change your name so that it does not imply this is a company account. RudolfRed (talk) 19:53, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Major problems with automatic row numbers in the mobile app
editThere is a problem with the Template:Row numbers that breaks content in the mobile app (the template documentation says so). This problem is over 18 month old (see e.g. this). As a result, pages like List of tallest buildings in the United States or List of living cardinals have major problems in the wikipedia app for mobile phones. It appears to me that there are 3 strategies regarding this problem:
- Fixing the template or the app
- Accepting that some pages don't work in the app
- Removing the template
The first strategy looks tempting, but I don't know how to do this. Is anybody working on a solution for this problem (I know that threads at phabricator exixt, but the problems seems to be complicated)? What strategy is right here? --Kallichore (talk) 21:01, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Kallichore: Another option could be to force desktop view when attempted to be viewed on a mobile. Until it's fixed, I would remove the template and manually maintain the rankings, especially on an article that doesn't change all that much. I maintain the ranks manually on a list article that has changes every week and it's not that big a deal. The template is transcluded in 88 mainspace articles, perhaps some inappropriately, like Eddie Butcher (which I'll remove). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 19:32, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Kallichore: I looked at List of tallest buildings in the United States on (old) Android 5.0.2 without logging in and saw the table render normally (not display the wiki code of the table, as the problem report describes). What am I missing? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 04:52, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- I encounter the problem with the Wikipedia app (version 2.7.50333-r-2020-10-06, Android 8.00). I noticed there is a "View article in browser" button in the app, which opens the article in a browser (Chrome in my case). There are no problems with the article when using the browser. @AlanM1: Have you used the app (which version?) or a browser on your Android? --Kallichore (talk) 14:07, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Kallichore: I was using Firefox. I've installed the app and do see the problem there. Thanks. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 16:29, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
