Wikipedia Hits the Mat
editSome weeks are slow, but this one was so bad views-wise that for the first time since 2014 the report is topped by something with less than 800,000 views. And said #1 is a wrestling event, and there are some more violent sports entries as well (#8 and 14 are boxers, #15 and #20 American football players). Otherwise, readers sought predators of the sexual (#5, #7, #16) and alien hunter kind (#6), rap arguments (#3, #12), scary movies (#12) and TV (#18), India spicing things up a bit with TV (#3, #21) and cricket (#25), movies in theaters (#10, #22) or having their trailers released (#9, #13), Elon Musk still on the news (#17) and some stuff that you just can count on appearing: holidays (#19), Netflix (#24), and of course, death (#2, #23).
For the week of September 16 to 22, 2018, the 25 most popular articles on Wikipedia, as determined from the WP:5000 report were:
Rank Article Class Views Image About 1 Hell in a Cell (2018) 754,131 The tenth edition of this wrestling event (though not the only one to feature said cage) was held in San Antonio, Texas. 2 Deaths in 2018 730,409 Things are so slow that the only constant was people checking our obituary. 3 Machine Gun Kelly (rapper) 706,982 This is as big as you're gonna get, so enjoy it. Had to give you a career to destroy it. 4 Anup Jalota 635,774 This popular Indian singer is on the current edition of the popular show Bigg Boss (#21). 5 Christine Blasey Ford 560,826 The latest step in at least delaying the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination (#7) was given by this psychologist\professor of statistics, who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault back when they were in high school. 6 The Predator (film) 559,729 Hunter, hunted, which are you?
Diablo, come again
To make trophies out of menThe extraterrestrial big game hunter described in the movie itself as "Whoopi Goldberg, if she was an alien" (in Brazil, we compare him to Carlinhos Brown) that already butted heads with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Glover, Adrien Brody and the Alien returned to theaters in a production that wasn't DIY, but still made by Black & Dekker. Full of blood, quips and action, but a bit weird in its plotting, The Predator has split critics and fans while also struggling a bit in the box office ($40 million in the U.S. and $94m worldwide, against a budget of $88m). As a fan of those movies, I hope it isn't the end for this ugly mofo.
7 Brett Kavanaugh 550,921 In the words of Samantha Bee "I can’t believe this needs saying, but it’s never okay to try to rape somebody (#5)—not even in high school! Not even if you’re totally gonna be a Supreme Court justice." 8 Gennady Golovkin 546,964 One year after a controversial bout with Canelo Álvarez (#4) that ended in a split-decision draw, the Kazakh middleweight world champion fought him again, and lost his titles. 9 Carol Danvers 536,859 The trailer for Captain Marvel (#13) was released, giving comic fans a first look at the superheroine played by Brie Larson (pictured). 10 A Simple Favor (film) 505,694 Anna Kendrick (pictured) investigates the disappearance of Blake Lively in this mystery film by Paul Feig (back to directing after the unfairly maligned Ghostbusters, and only his second movie that isn't a comedy), which has been getting positive reviews and good box office. Maybe I'll give it a shot. 11 The Nun (film) 495,607 $100 million in the box office for a movie about a character who only appears in one scene of The Conjuring 2? Who can understand American film goers? 12 Eminem 491,570 Marshall Mathers released The Slim Shady LP when Machine Gun Kelly (#3) was just 9, so of course he served as one of his influences. Yet now they're in a beef with back-and-forth diss tracks. 13 Captain Marvel (film) 484,714 The next International Women's Day will show the payoff to why Nick Fury called Carol Danvers (#9) through an old school pager at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. And a few months later, it'll be time to see how she'll help the defeat of Thanos. 14 Canelo Álvarez 476,593 After serving some months of suspension due to a banned substance, this Mexican boxer had a second shot at fighting Gennady Golovkin (#8), and won. 15 Patrick Mahomes 451,794 Americans finally returned their version of football to the Top 25 Report with the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, who has led the team to three straight victories in a so far record-breaking season. 16 Anita Hill 439,150 This attorney wrote an op-ed regarding #5's allegations against #7. 17 Elon Musk 417,616 While his fortune and reputation might be dropping due to marijuana-related controversy, Mr. Musk has his mind out of this world, as more details were released about the SpaceX lunar tourism mission. 18 American Horror Story: Apocalypse 412,888 Ryan Murphy has now spent a longer time with this horror anthology than Glee. Sarah Paulson again is one of the stars, running an underground bunker during a nuclear winter. 19 Yom Kippur 408,126 After three years, views are finally good enough for the Jewish "Day of Atonement" to get back on our list. 20 Ryan Fitzpatrick 402,912 Another gridiron quarterback, who at the age of 35 and in his seventh (!) team has already led the oft-terrible Tampa Buccaneers to two straight wins. 21 Bigg Boss (Hindi season 12) 392,886 Wished this was an Indian version of Metal Gear, but instead it's one for Big Brother, which started on September 16th with a cast of mostly celebrities such as Anup Jalota (#4). 22 Crazy Rich Asians (film) 378,639 The staying power of this romantic comedy starring Constance Wu (picture) is impressive, both in this list and the box office (now it has surpassed $150 million in North America). 23 Mac Miller 371,771 The recently deceased rapper had his burial, although the autopsy is still uncertain about what killed him. 24 American Vandal 366,441 Netflix released the second season of this mockumentary series that parodies true crime programs. Hope we don't see Wikipedia vandalism appearing someday, even if American Vandal On Wheels has a ring to it. 25 2018 Asia Cup 364,882 Our friends in India again, this time checking if the beloved national cricket team can defend their title in this biannual tournament.
Exclusions
edit- This list excludes the Wikipedia main page, non-article pages (such as redlinks), and anomalous entries (such as DDoS attacks or likely automated views). Since mobile view data became available to the Report in October 2014, we exclude articles that have almost no mobile views (5–6% or less) or almost all mobile views (94–95% or more) because they are very likely to be automated views based on our experience and research of the issue. Please feel free to discuss any removal on the talk page if you wish.
