Goomy, known in Japan as Numera (Japanese: ヌメラ, Hepburn: Numera), is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. First introduced in Pokémon X and Y, it has appeared in multiple games including Pokémon Go and the Pokémon Trading Card Game, as well as various merchandise.

Conception and design

edit

The lower part of its body is light purple, while the upper section is a lighter shade of purple. There are five prominent green spots along the border between the two colors, with the mouth located at the front of this line. Atop its head, Goomy has two pairs of horns, with the back pair being longer than the front. These sensitive horns help it navigate and assess its environment.

Goomy is regarded as the least powerful Dragon-type Pokémon. Its body is primarily composed of water and is enveloped in a mucous membrane that harbors germs. This slimy coating enables it to deflect physical attacks without harm. However, if Goomy's body dries out, it cannot breathe and will perish. Consequently, Goomy prefers to inhabit moist, shaded environments. Goomy's horns possess strong sensory capabilities, enabling it to detect potential threats, which helps it evade danger. In the anime, it is shown to feed on leaves.

Goomy and its Hisuian evolutions are the sole Pokémon known to be able to learn the move Shelter. Furthermore, before Generation IX, Goomy and its evolved forms were the only Pokémon that could possess the Ability Gooey. [1]

Pokédex entries [2]

Gen VI
X The weakest Dragon-Type Pokémon, it lives in damp, shady places, so its body doesn't dry out.
Y It's covered in a slimy membrane that makes any punches or kicks slide off it harmlessly.
Omega Ruby The weakest Dragon-type Pokémon, it lives in damp, shady places, so its body doesn't dry out.
Alpha Sapphire It's covered in a slimy membrane that makes any punches or kicks slide off it harmlessly.
Gen VII
Sun The weakest of all Dragon-type Pokémon, it’s unable to breathe if its skin dries out, so it sticks to shady places.
Moon Its source of protection is its slimy, germ-laden mucous membrane. Anyone who touches it needs some thorough hand-washing.
Ultra Sun It uses its horns to check out its surroundings. They’re very sensitive, so if you grab them, it will feel a strong shock and be unable to move.
Ultra Moon Its body is mostly water. If it dries out, it will die, so it’s always sitting with perfect stillness in the shade.
Gen VIII
Sword Because most of its body is water, it will dry up if the weather becomes too arid. It’s considered the weakest dragon Pokémon.
Shield Their horns are powerful sensors. As soon as Goomy pick up any sign of enemies, they go into hiding. This is how they’ve survived.
Legends of Acreus Goomy hides away in the shade of trees, where it's nice and humid. If the slime coating its body dries out, the Pokémon instantly becomes lethargic.
Brilliant Diamond Goomy is unavailable in Brilliant Diamond
Shining Pearl Goomy is unavailable in Shining Pearl
Gen IX
Scarlet Most of a Goomy’s body is water. A membrane covers the whole Pokémon to prevent it from shriveling up in dry weather.
Violet Goomy's horns are excellent sensory organs that cover all five of Goomy's senses. Goomy picks up on danger from the movement of the air.

In The Animation

edit

In the main series, Goomy was captured as the fourth Pokemon in the Kalos Region. It eventually evolves to Goodra.[5]

Before its debut, Goodra was a Goomy living peacefully in wetlands, where it played with a Wooper. One day, their home was invaded by a swarm of Bug- and Fairy-type Pokémon led by a Florges. Goomy, frightened and unable to defend itself, was struck by a Moonblast and developed a deep fear of these types.

Goodra first appeared as Goomy in "A Slippery Encounter!" when it fell onto Ash's head. Weak and scared, Ash and his friends helped it recover. Goomy hid from Dedenne and later was frightened again by an Ariados. Clemont used an invention to uncover Goomy's backstory.

When Team Rocket captured Goomy and Pikachu, Goomy helped Pikachu escape despite the tight space. During their escape, Goomy used Rain Dance to slow down James, giving Ash's team time to fight back. Inspired by Ash's dedication to his Pokémon, Goomy motivated itself to battle, using Bide to defeat Team Rocket. In the end, Goomy chose to join Ash, who captured it in a Poké Ball.

Trivia

edit

Goomy was designed by Saya Tsuruta.[9]

Origin

edit

Goomy appears to be inspired by soft-bodied gastropods, including slugs and nudibranchs. Its Dragon typing and evolutionary design likely reference the "blue dragon" sea slug. Additionally, Goomy may draw from the idea of living slime found in popular culture. It also shares some similarities with the prehistoric creature Wiwaxia. [1]
