English: Matthias Stom was one of the many Dutch artists who travelled to Rome in the early 17th century. There they were strongly influenced by Caravaggio’s use of light and shadow. They often painted night scenes with figures rendered realistically in artificial light. Stom depicts a young man reading by candlelight. His concentration offers an image of contemporary concepts of diligence and virtue. The painting provided an aesthetic as well as a contemplation experience.
