Is this really pronounced alph-AV-ir-rus? I thought it was simply pronounced like the two words that form it. Put me right, by all means, but if no-one has in a week I'll probably change it.
I work alongside a group of virus researchers and they say AL-pha-VI-rus, as you say. In 30 years I have never heard anyone say alph-AV-ir-us in a scientific seminar.
