Dutch-language surname
editCox is also a Dutch language surname. On a purely speculation level, I would argue that this is a spelling corruption from the word kok (the Dutch word for cook). Can anyone substantiate this evidence, or any other findings of the Dutch surname, so that it may be added to this page? LightPhoenix (talk) 22:56, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
Scottish
editIt says the name is English and Welsh (and Irish). Yet, there are four Scottish Cox on the list, and not a single Welsh. Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 15:03, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
Other
editI was always lead to believe that Cox and Swain were family names relating back to the occupation coxswain i.e., the person in charge of a small boat. Certainly it is common to refer to the coxswain of a rowing eight as the cox. AutoElectEngr (talk) 09:07, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
