The sentence "This was accepted by the British government" seems very misleading. It was not up to the British government to "recognise" it; Fiji was a sovereign state, over which the British government had no authority. I assume that what the article should be saying is either that the British government granted diplomatic recognition to the new republic on that day, or that the monarchy recognised its abolition in Fiji on that day. I think it's referring to the British government diplomatically recognising the new republic. The 1970-1987 commonwealth realm of Fiji of course owed no allegiance to either the British monarch nor the British government, only Elizabeth II in her 1970-1987 role as Queen of Fiji.
