E71 implicated in HFMD as well as Cox A16

edit

In the section of Enterovirus 71, there is a sentence which leads one to think of E71 as the major cause for HFMD: Enterovirus 71 (EV71), one of the major causative agents for hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD).

While a sentence on the CDC website states that there is more than one likely scenario: Coxsackievirus A16 is the most common cause of HFMD, but other coxsackieviruses have been associated with the illness. Enteroviruses, including enterovirus 71, have also been associated with HFMD and with outbreaks of the disease. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/revb/enterovirus/hfhf.htm

Can someone comment on this further?

Name

edit

Can anyone shed light on why this family of viruses is called Enterovirus? To me, the name seems to suggest that it affects the intestines (like Gastro-enteritis) but it seems to be primarily a respiratory infection.Sbreheny (talk) 14:35, 7 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Master Species List Update

edit

Hello,

I found a newer version of the master species list - currently the dead link in citations. https://talk.ictvonline.org/files/master-species-lists/m/msl/5945 I lack the qualifications to know if anything in the article is materially different with the new list, so I don't believe I should replace the existing dead link.
