re "Deluge of 2006"
editThe "Deluge of 2006" is becoming old hat. Highland, like the other towns along the Little Calumet River, has had a history of flooding every now and then. Youngsters residing in town might not realize this, but the 2006 flood is nothing new, and not really all that remarkable as floods go. Unless someone has an objection, I plan in the near future to condense this material into a more relevant nugget and put it into the History section, in the context of other past floods. Sounds like a good idea, but has Highland really flooded that often? I know of the Frog Hollow flood back in '90, but don't know of anything before that.
I suppose there could be something about the levies as a result of the '90 flood.

- Yes, at least the areas near the Little Calumet River have. The real old-timers may remember back into the '50's and '40's when there were regular and serious floods, not only in Highland, but in nearby areas of Munster, Hammond, Lansing, etc. These tended to be abated because of work done in the '60's, but, remember, the entire river area was a swamp 150 years ago. The land near the river is low-lying and has only a very gentle gradient. A little water spreads out a long way. Xenophon777 15:26, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- The flooding in Highland over the past couple of days reminded me of the above exchange... Xenophon777 03:12, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Although the area has flooded at other times, the September 2006 storm was notable because the damage was so extensive and wide-spread that the President issued a major disaster declaration for the area.Mannpark (talk) 03:57, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Deletion of John Skrentny
editI'd like to suggest the removal of the bit about John Skrentny on notability grounds. I don't see here any basis for his inclusion. Before simply editing him out, I wanted to give a chance for anyone to suggest leaving him in, or to include more information on his notability. I note that Wikipedia does not seem to have an independent article on John Skrentny. Xenophon777 (talk) 18:22, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- No thoughts? Xenophon777 (talk) 12:57, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
