Polled Sheep Picture

edit

Somebody added a pic of a polled sheep. It is nice, but I would like a picture without fancy cropping effects. Is there a version without the oval effect over it? Isoxyl 12:04, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the cropping does look rather strange... Think outside the box 11:10, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

there are no llamas in iceland at all and no lamas guarding the sheeps so reimoved the link —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 88.149.107.137 (talk) 19:55, 23 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

The thing is, Icelandic sheep are not only found in Iceland (though you may argue that icelandic sheep in other places are not quite the same). I agree with Rboesen that llamas are used in some places with ANY sheep, although given Iceland's famous prohibition of animal imports (and South America wasn't discovered until later), it is no surprise there is no use for llamas there. I think the guard llama reference is valid, although it is more relevant to sheep in general than Icelandics in particular... also guard donkeys, etc. Isoxyl 15:02, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes i live in iceland the import rules of animals are very extreme
Please sign your talk with four tildes (~~~~). We understand that objection, certainly, in Iceland. Obviously there, there are no llamas. Perhaps we should specify that this is only OUTSIDE of Iceland if it isn't already stated. Thanks for looking over the article. Isoxyl 15:06, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sheep breeders

edit

I am removing the list of sheep breeders, because I don't think the Wikipedia should be an advertisement for various breeders, but not others. A Google search should find breeders for anyone interested. It just doesn't seem fair to those not listed, plus each interested breeder who comes along with a website seems to add their own to the list. Four is too many, and it would only be fair to remove them all. If you disagree, please give thoughts here, but otherwise list is removed for now. Isoxyl 18:14, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes - I am one of the offending breeders. However, we provide a bunch of information for free for those involved with this breed and other species. We also provide educational forums at different shows regarding this breed. So, to say that we only "sell" Icelandic Sheep is incorrect and I would like my listing reinstated. Rboesen 12:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well, I certainly don't think the breeders are there just to sell, and I have no doubt that educational material is provided. Still, Wikipedia is not there to provide links to everyone's website either. I think it is okay to provide a link a specific sheep education page within your breeder website, however, if you are linking to a top-level page with commercial selling of lambs as well as educational links, it would probably violate Wikipedia policy. If there is such a page on your website, feel free to re-link. However, please give a descriptive title to the page, not just your breeder name. WP is not a service to get your name out there. I hope I am not coming across as anti-breeder in any way. I love Icelandics and the breeders are very important! But I just want to be fair to everyone. Linking to a billion breeders does no service, and neither does linking to only one. An education page I can agree is useful, but not a general breeder site. Isoxyl 13:19, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree. Your point is well taken. I will replace the link to our info page. That is a great compromise Rboesen 14:06, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Color edit

edit

Someone edited the 'Color' section on 9-14-14, to add 'white' as one of the base colors. White is not a base color of Icelandics, only moorit (brown) and black are. I wanted to post on the talk page before reverting this edit, in case someone wanted to discuss it, and to hopefully avoid someone re-editing it back in and accusing me of starting an edit war. There are also some other edits I would like to do in this article, such as to clarify some things in the Color genetics section, and update the Milking section (removing a statement that has gone unsourced for years, and referencing a study I may need some help with as I don't read Icelandic). I'm still a novice at editing on Wikipedia, how long do I give the person who made the above mentioned edit, before I edit it back? Ruralgal (talk) 03:01, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Ruralgal: Thanks for joining in to help, and for posting on the Talk page. Please do feel free to remove unreferenced information you think is wrong, like in the milking section. Regarding the color section though, I can find two sources which say that white is one of the colors of purebred Icelandics. First is the breeder's association in North America, and the second is Storey's Illustrated Breed Guide to Sheep, Goats, Cattle and Pigs. The lead photo in the article also seems to show a pair of white Icelandics. Steven Walling • talk 06:22, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Steven! Yes, Icelandics come in many colors. But the edit I mentioned is in the section that talks about the 'base color'. I don't have the Storey's Guide, but on page two of the Icelandic Sheep Facts on the breeder's assoc. site you linked to, they say "Genetically, Icelandics have one of two base colors, either black or moorit (brown)." White Icelandics occur when either their pattern is white (which masks the base color), or their white spotting is so extensive it covers most or all of the base color. I admit it's a bit confusing, so I'm working on some rewriting that will hopefully make it more clear. Interestingly, of the 9 sheep currently on the page, nearly all of them are white. In a breed with such a wide range of colors, patterns and markings, maybe someone can find some good pictures to show more color variety. I may have time to look later. And I do have Icelandic sheep, but it's hard to get a picture I would consider 'wiki-worthy'. Thanks again! Ruralgal (talk) 01:31, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Huh, interesting. So the base color of white Icelandics is a darker color? Anyway, makes sense to me. Please do edit away. Steven Walling • talk 06:07, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

top photo is not an Icelandic?

edit

The sheep in the top photo certainly does not have a short fluke shaped tail as specified in the breed description -- is it really an Icelandic? 109.146.254.74 (talk) 11:13, 23 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
