Kathina, Kathin and mid-autumn festivals
editHey, Paul, I saw you visiting this talk page. Write now it needs an etymology section, and it seems you know more about that than just dipping into dictionaries like I do.
- The Thetsagan Sart mid-autumn festival connection is a desert prepared for Thod Kathin, too: krayasart [ORID: กระยาสารท [-สาด] น. ขนมทําด้วยถั่วงาและข้าวเม่าข้าวตอกกวนกับ น้ำตาล แต่เดิมนิยมทําเฉพาะในเทศกาลสารท.] ข้าวเม่า is prepared from "grain in the ear" filled with milky starch that's not fully ripe (and is mildly alcoholic,) ข้าวตอก is popped rice. I don't know the significance of popped rice, ถั่ว legume or งา sesame, and don't know why ORID mentions น้ำตาล sugar and not นำ้้ผึ่ง honey. Honey is an essential ingredient that links both Thod Kathin and Thetsagan Sart to Madhu Purnima: The painting from Laos shows a monkey offering a honeycomb. - Krayasat is traditionally made during Sat Thai, but I have never heard of any significance it has to Kathin. I live in the city, though, and mostly only know about these festivals out of the books. It deserves to be mentioned at Sat Thai, but I'm afraid I know almost nothing about these traditional confectioneries. --Paul_012 (talk) 16:34, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Merge proposal with article Kathin festival
editThe subject of this article and the article Kathin Festival is for all intents and purposes the same subject. The pages should be merged.--S Khemadhammo (talk) 18:14, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, that article should be merged here. There doesn't seem to be much Thailand-specific info that would warrant a sub-article. --Paul_012 (talk) 23:32, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
