The feat is attributed to his gardener Henry Telende, who was influenced by the methods of the younger Pieter de la Court, whose ideas were popularized by Richard Bradley. The trick was to use tanner's bark to keep the soil warm, and this was kept secret by de la Court and others for many decades until 1737. However, it seems that de la Court's method was widely shared by the invisible college of botanists and gardeners prior to publication.
