Ancient Rome?
editHow ancient is this Carnival? Since ancient Rome did not 'know' of the existence of the new world how did the carnival make it's way to brazil? What is the significance of the celebration etc? - A lot of stuff is missing, especially about how this links to 'ancient' Rome. - Obviously being in Brazil authors, or the author should try to clarify how and why it was picked up by the Brazilians. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.200.162.14 (talk) 09:40, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Links for commercial Brazilian site
editThis page contains lots of links for a totally commercial Brazilian site. I am new for here. How I do to it erase these links?

show or party?
editRe the recent show/party edit reverts:
- Rio carnival show - 407,000 Google hits.
- Rio carnival party - 300,000 Google hits.
Shall we go with show or is there a better term? Totnesmartin (talk) 17:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Some text explaining the Rainhas de Bateria
editCan someone please add some text describing the Rainha de Bateria? There is something explaining the Rainha de Bandeira but nothing on the Rainha de Bateria. However there is a pic of a Rainha de Bateria so it looks out of place with no reason to be in the article (other than to point out that tere are naked women in the carnaval). Thanks. Padillah (talk) 18:18, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, nudity isn't allowed at the carnaval apparently, so this woman (Viviane Castro - hey, is the Cuba job still going?) wore a 1.6 inch patch. That's 4 cm. And she didn't even win (in fact her samba group was relegated to a lower division for breaking the no-nudity rule). Perhaps a picture of the 2008 Beija Flor Rainha da Bateria (Raissa Oliveira) would be better? Totnesmartin (talk) 19:25, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, to be honest my wife would probably know more about this than I, she's the one from Brazil, not me. I do know that what Brazilians refer to as "nudity" we refer to as "full nudity". To people in the U.S. topless is nude. But I also know that carnaval is not about being nude,it's about the samba schools. In this context I support any pic of a Rainha da Bateria, the nudity is just something I think us US people get attached to. I'd like to find a couple more pics of the majesty of the parade rather than the nudity of it. Padillah (talk) 19:39, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Exactly, the costumes are excellent and we need more of them. The fact that nudity breaks competition rules makes the photo a bit aberrant. By the way, I live in sunny Britain </sarcasm> and I don't know any Brazilians! And getting attached to nudity: this evening, finding out stuff for this article, It took me about a minute to find a name for the naked woman and about twelve times longer to find who actually won... Totnesmartin (talk) 22:20, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Where did you find this stuff? I can look with my wife tonight (well, it'll be tonight here) and she can help me look for stuff on the Brazilian pages. But when I tried to find anything on this pic I couldn't find anything. Supposedly this is from "Canaval 2008" so I googled that but came up with very little. I'll look harder tonight but I'm surprised at the effectivness of your search. Oh, and you misspelled "nowiki" so your nowiki tag doesn't end correctly. I'd fix it but then the tildes at the end would put my signature. Padillah (talk) 22:00, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Nowiki fixed. The pictures are from the samba school article and individual samba school articles in the English and Portuguese pages. Information about Viviane Castro is from news sites. Do you think there should be a Rainha da bateria article? Totnesmartin (talk) 22:20, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Rainha da Bateria translates to Queen of the Band. This Woman represents the band and she dances in front of the band section to anounce that the band is coming. This is a position of prestige and is given to girls that have been in the Samba school for many years or famous girls that accept the invitation. Can we try and get some valid citations?
editThere is still one SPAM link left to get rid of, www.ipanema.com. Can we replace those citations with WP:EL-compliant citations? Any help would be appreciated. Padillah (talk) 18:04, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
My understanding is that citations should be from English-language sources but this presents a problem sometimes when Carnaval information has been poorly translated or poorly understood by the cited authority. In such cases, it clashes with the large scale common experience of people who have followed, attended and taken part in carnavals, especially the desfiles (parades / competition), and with the common knowledge of local people who happen to read the English Wiki. The terminology sometimes does not have an exact English equivalent, and most books on Carnaval are written in Portuguese. I agree that www.ipanema.com should be removed. It is extremely frivolous. The LIESA site is the authority, but is only in Portuguese and assumes a certain familiarity. Some commercial links are quite solid. Others, like the one you mention, paint a side of Rio that reflects only the most gratuitous aspects of carnaval for certain groups of foreigners (Most cariocas would hardly want to recognise their city like that.)--Parzivalamfortas (talk) 05:11, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
Rio de Janeiro, the cultural capital of Brazil? (first paragraph)
editI´d like to see some formal citations that could prove this allegation. As far as I know, the city of Sao Paulo has way more cultural events than Rio de Janeiro. Joevicentini (talk) 23:56, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Britannica online, among other sites, calls it this, but that does not necessarily make it true. Rio possibly leads in terms of popular music and celebrations, and definitely in terms of Carnaval and a holiday capital for visitors; but Sao Paulo holds hosts a world-class orchestra, the museums and galleries are world-class, and with internationally recognised masterpieces in their Pinacoteca and MASP, for instance (although Rio, it is true, has remarkable architecture. I think it might be better to call Rio "the Carnaval Capital of Brasil" which is hardly in dispute.--Parzivalamfortas (talk) 04:28, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

"samba, an African dance"?
editSorry, but samba is an brazilian dance with African influences. But the dance was born in Brazil.
I think the unattributed point made above has been corrected by someone; but I have also amended the at one point to read "Carnaval samba" as there are several different types of samba, even in Brazil, and even more when we use the term generally (eg it would include ballroom samba). If this is seen as too picky, I don't mind if someone who objects reverts it simply to 'samba.' --Parzivalamfortas (talk) 05:17, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Street carnival
editThe section about the street carnival is very small. The Brazilian Carnival article has much more infos about the Blocos in a section about Rio. Many Coriocas consider these blocos to be the real carnival, the Samba parades are for the tourists and the rich. The blocos are where millions of people celebrate the carnival together, I think they deserve some more space in this article. Could the section about the blocos in the Brazilian Carnival article be integrated here? Luzian (talk) 10:21, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Much as I see your point, I imagine that most English-speaking readers will expect to find some emphasis on the samba parades. Although they are looked down on by many cariocas who stick to blocos, foreign tourists make up only a small section of the thousands at the Sambódromo. Of those that are tourists, many are Brazilian. While most sectors are expensive, sectors 12 and 13 are certainly not beyond the reach of any carioca with a normal income. Most carioacas simply watch it live on TV. But remember that it is broadcast live to millions across South America and beyond. It also has termendous economic and cultural impact. So although I hear what you are saying, I think the general wiki here needs a balance of all the aspects.
Blocos vary enormously, so some more detail could be given, as well as a note about their community significance (as well as the ones that are a showcase for the schools in the Special Group.) But similarly, with the parades, I feel that an encyclopedia article such as this should at least have some mention of the economic significance, the involvement of O Globo, and maybe some of the scandals in earlier years and how judging has been subjected to greater security and openness since, plus some mention of the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer that designed the Sambadrome. The bigger street blocos, on the other hand, are more like the 'carnival' processions and celebrations of other countries around the world (and even some other parts of Brasil), and it is the sambadrome parades that are the most distinguishing feature of Rio Carnaval.--Parzivalamfortas (talk) 05:44, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
The Biggest Carnival in the World
editAccording the Guinness World Records 2010, the carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the largest carnival in the world, attracting more than two million people per day and 300,000 tourists. http://community.guinnessworldrecords.com/_O-carnaval-de-Rio-de-Janeiro-o-maior-carnaval-do-mundo/blog/1852274/7691.html

Carnival ticket prices
editI think there is room for amendment or deletion here. Firstly the prices are quoted not just in US dollars (making it US-centric) but are the prices charged for advance booking by one of the many companies re-selling them to foreigners. The cost of buying them from an agent when in Rio is much less, and even less if one buys them directly from LIESA. People pay for convenience. Also the reference to "season" is meaningless. There is only one carnival season for Brasil. --Parzivalamfortas (talk) 05:58, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
Sambadrome (In)famous events?
editIt says "Today, some of the most infamous events of Rio Carnival are ticketed events." in the Rio Carnival section. It doesnt elaborate why are they infamous (or famous), and seems more like an opinion. Which is it? 190.148.155.21 (talk) 00:52, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
I think that sentence is relatively meaningless as it is in that section and should probably be deleted. The more famous, and sometmes infamous, ticketed events are for grand parties at locations like Copacabana Palace. --Parzivalamfortas (talk) 05:49, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

editI removed this article from membership of WikiProject Organized Crime because the article contains no evidence of this event itself, being involved in organized crime. While some individuals involved in organized crime may also be involved in this event, that doesn't imply the event is involved in organized crime, without evidence of what that involvement is being stated in the article. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 10:55, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
