SAN MATEO Honeymoon Over For Hillsdale Inn Tower

Friday, April 6, 2001

San Mateo's odd honeymoon suite on stilts, which loomed over Highway 101 near the Bay Meadows racetrack for decades, was toppled yesterday.

The Hillsdale Inn Tower had not been used since the mid-1970s and had fallen into disrepair.

In its heyday, the suite-in-the-sky was a coveted honeymoon spot. More recently, some area residents thought of it as a landmark while others said it was an eyesore.

This past winter, San Mateo building inspectors deemed it structurally unsafe. Instead of repairing it, the hotel's owner decided to have it demolished.

Removing reference to "Stanford chemist Alex Aycinena" who only shows up on Google as a student running in track meets at Serra High School. The most notable entry for the contributor (128.12.38.201) was vandalism to the Planned Parenthood article.

Note: Apparently another book, by the same publisher, has this same ISBN for some reason. One of the external websites listed "HBK" after the ISBN for the San Mateo, California book.

Paris of the Peninsula ?

I've lived in the SF Bay area for over 15 years and I've never heard San Mateo referred to as the "Paris of the Peninsula". I think this was added as a joke and should be removed from the Wiki. The only reference to "Paris of the Peninsula" I can find on Google is the one below.

Fashion Island

I'm from San Mateo originally and found the wiki page listing Shopping Malls in the U.S. and was suprised to not see Fashion Island listed (I added Hillsdale Shopping Center). Was Fashion Island in San Mateo or Foster City? Does it still exist? There isn't a wiki page for it. Thanks for any help. --Mjrmtg 17:59, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Fashion Island was completely demolished (except for the skating rink) and replaced with a different kind of shopping center called Bridgepointe. Technically it is in San Mateo. Schmiteye 06:18, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Does anyone have a picture of the old Fashion Island mall? Back in the late 80's/early 90s, I remember getting a post card sized ad in the mail with an aireal shot that I liked. I thought I had kept this card (and I have not given up finding it yet), but anyone has a pic of Fashion Island, I'd appreciate it as in the 80s, I was a mallrat and enjoyed going to Fashion Island on the weekends. Economy

I would vote for this section being removed as it currently stands. Listing a bunch of companies just looks like advertising to me. Who is to say what makes a company "prominent". Census/Demographics

There was no US Census in 2008. The Population Estimates Program data are not favored over the decennial census in other California articles, and would not, in any case, present the race/ethnicity data as this article did. I'm working off the Carlsbad, California article (for comparison) on the first paragraph and copy-pasting the data from [2], except for population density (copied from infobox) and housing unit density (left that one alone). This photo is pretty cool but I can't find much information on it?

"In 1854 Frederick Macondray, one of San Francisco's first merchants, settled in San Mateo. Mr. Macondray acquired a large tract of land on the south bank of the San Mateo Creek and there for several years made his home, subsequently selling to John Parrott, a native of Fairfax Court House, Virginia. This property remained in the hands of the Parrott estate until 1927 and is now being subdivided as the Baywood Subdivision and will probably become one of the most desirable of all of the home locations of San Mateo County."[3]

Looks like the Parrott estate (375 acres) also goes by the name "Baywood Estate".[4] "Parrott Drive, named for him, now bisects the land which once made up the Parrott Baywood estate.", "(Baywood Estate was located at) El Camino Real at 120 W.
