editHow is "Mannlicher" pronounced? It's uh... quite dubious. --Seven11groove 19:28, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's mann-lisher most accurately, though someone who speaks the Austrian variant of German may do better at explaining.
- There are an infinity of foreign words, person and place names that sound wierd or funny in english. A lot of our words have the same problem in reverse (Chevy "No-va" anyone?). It's only slightly funny. Georgewilliamherbert 20:26, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
- Dubious?
- I guess our German neighbours do not pronounce this word differently. What Georgewilliamherbert writes "sounds" quite ok for me, it's how I would expect an english-speaking person to pronounce it. "mann" is pronounced like the english "man" but with the a in the German way (mouth wider open). "licher" is hard to explain; lisher is definitly wrong. The ch-sound would be Voiceless velar fricative I guess, hear the sound example. The second word he says there would be written "acha" in German. So take the a's from there for "mann" and the "ch" for "licher", then you will get a close match. --Wirthi 05:53, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
Use of Sniper rifles
editRecently CNN broadcast film of American troops being killed by snipers. Anyone have access to the tapes to determine if the Steyr Mannlicher was the weapon used? Crashj 20:18, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
