Split from strategy games
editA lot of video game articles are tied to board game articles. This is unnecessarily complicated for people who are only interested in video games. I've taken the liberty of separating these two, as there is lots of reliable and notable research to support that strategy games can be discussed as purely a computer gaming phenomenon. (e.g.: Without getting into the mechanics of board games.) Ludologist12 (talk) 05:44, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
- Then please support your view with some references that say, "strategy games can be discussed as purely a computer gaming phenomenon". SharkD (talk) 20:54, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- This is a non-issue. If you go to gamespy and they're talking about "best strategy game this year", they're not talking about board games. When you mention RTSs or artillery games, you simply cannot be referring to a board game. We have a category for strategy video games that doesn't include board games. Let's not get bureaucratic here. Ludologist12 (talk) 03:51, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- When you suggest that lots of reliable research supports something it's important to back it up with sources. SharkD (talk) 05:07, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- The only source being used, so far, is from a book solely about video games. There's plenty more where that came from. Ludologist12 (talk) 17:22, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Lead text
editThe mention of Battlezone in the lead text is a bit bizarre. It may be a game that involves strategy (as most games do), but the reason why it may be "a notable exception" is that, well, it isn't a strategy game? In any case, if we are going to mention specific games in the lead, it should be one that is known for being an exemplary strategy game, like Civilzation or something. Marasmusine (talk) 10:03, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Hybrid section?
editShould the Sub Genre section include a hybrid section for games that integrate 2 or more strategy game elements? An example being the Total War series which has real time tactical battles (real time strategy games have base building and resource collection) within a 4x game? Chunkynut (talk) 17:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think a lot of games can involve both kinds of gameplay. Most 4X games would still fall within the basic real-time/turn-based gameplay. My own intuition: lots of strategy games include tactics, but a pure tactics game is one that does not emphasize any major strategy. Randomran (talk) 18:06, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Grand Strategy
editWhat about a section for "Grand Strategy" games such as Hearts of Iron 2?--EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 19:00, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- Isn't hearts of iron a real time strategy game? I agree that this article needs more info about the scale / setting / historic period / themes in these games though. Someone should add more descriptions on all strategy video games and common elements across TBS and RTS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.114.235.18 (talk) 19:50, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- There was at one point an article about Grand Strategy video games, but somehow it got transformed into an article focusing solely on board games. SharkD (talk) 23:07, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Wesnoth
editI would object to The Battle for Wesnoth being called a Turn-based strategy game. One reviewer at least called it a Tactical RPG, and there's not a lot of strategic [Ed. as opposed to tactical] activity in the game besides occupying hotspots (i.e. buildings) and building the occasional new unit. SharkD (talk) 03:41, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
- The main webpage for Wesnoth says "The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme". That said, I hate over-use of examples in genre articles, and if we can choose a safer example, then we should. ... let alone trim back the examples to a minimum. Randomran (talk) 06:04, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Tower Defense
editSomeone should add a tower defense game type in the list part. It is a very prominent type of game and should be listed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Uber-Awesomeness (talk • contribs) 14:01, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Someone needs to add the Simcity series and other seminal city builders! How could these have been left out? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.157.76.74 (talk) 22:12, 15 April 2013 (UTC)
Linking to wrong article
editThe link from the name of the game Invasion, does not go to an article about a game. --95.34.149.224 (talk) 21:23, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've unlinked the word, as there's no separate article about the game. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:37, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
Lacking subgenres
editSome important subgenres of strategy are missing in this article, like MOBA, Tower defense and MMORTS . --Savig (talk) 11:12, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Business simulation and transport games
editGames like Cities: Skylines, Open TTD, are they strategy games? If they are, there should be a new section about economic strategy games. If there aren't, why? Аргскригициониец (talk) 22:13, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
I do not think that economic strategy games are not strategy games
editA paragraph appeared recently in the article:
Strategy games are also distinct from construction and management simulations, which include economic challenges without any fighting. These games may incorporate some amount of conflict, but are different from strategy games because they do not emphasize the need for direct action upon an opponent.
I disagree with this. The need for fighting is not a criterion that determines if the game is a strategy game or not. You can play Civilization without fighting, does this make this game non-strategy? Why don't you consider Anno series as a strategy game series? The Settlers? At the same time, you consider MOBA as a pure-strategic subgenre? Ask any player about it, he will answer that Anno is an economic strategy game/city-building game. I consider that economic strategy games, including city-builders, tycoons, transport tycoons and other management games are a subgenre of strategy games. I added information about this with the proofs in the article, but I suggest to discuss this here. Аргскригициониец (talk) 17:17, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
