From The Scotsman of Monday 15 October 1934:[6]
SCOTTISH ARTIST The Late John Blair. The death has taken place of Mr John Blair, who was widely known as a landscape artist. A native of Berwickshire, in his early years he migrated to Edinburgh to prosecute his studies in art. This he did at the School of Art under Hodder, and he was successful as a student in bearing off many prizes and distinctions, securing one year the gold medal for painting. His watercolours, well known to connoisseurs all over the country, depicting often the quaint picturesqueness of fishing villages, met wide appreciation. Unaffected by the modernist tendency in art, Mr Blair seemed to be influenced by the best traditions of the English school of watercolour, meticulous attention to detail being happily combined with achievement of the main theme, whether in massing or composition. Many of his works have been reproduced in colour. He is survived by his widow.
