My original interest was recording the history of the railway around Derby, but that has led me in many other directions, the history of Derbyshire itself and the many personalities.
I did't know till I started,for instance, that a Derby resident was the first non-military person to be called an engineer back in the eighteenth century, that a Derby factory was one of the first in the country to export machine tools to Russia, that many, many of our iconic iron and steel structures were designed and built by Derby companies and people - including the first ever.
How odd that, unknowing of this, my youngest should become a civil engineer specialising in steel structures, and Vice President of a leading American firm of architects.
