AfD notifications

Hello, BJBot. I appreciate your eagerness to notify authors of articles that I have listed for deletion. However, perhaps you should try to calm your subroutines down just a little bit and give me a few more minutes to do it myself. I added the AfD tag to Attorney Street (Manhattan) at 06:10 UTC [1], took a couple of minutes to write the AfD itself, posted it at 06:13 UTC [2], added it to the main AfD list at 06:14 UTC [3], and then went to Kmc212's talk page to notify the primary author of the page. I then found that you had already posted a notification at 06:14 UTC [4]. This is fine, but I would have preferred to do it myself, so that it looks like I'm on top of things, and also so that I could have used {{AFDWarningNew}} rather than {{AFDNote}} in an attempt to be a little less bitey. Just something for your consideration. —Bkell (talk) 06:27, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

The bot currently runs off a cron job, so I could change how it runs or run it less often (it runs every 15 minutes). Without running a continuous process the bot has no way of knowing when the page was added to the AfD page or prod cat. BJTalk 10:39, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Faulty PROD notification?

Hey,

This is a bit odd, because July 2005 doesn't actually seem to have ever been PROD'ed. Something wrong?

More bot problems

Regarding your message on my talk page: I think you're talking about my redirect of "Icecream" to "Ice cream", which appears to have been later changed into an article about a software package, and subsequently renamed to the current title of [5] to "Icecream (software)". The author of the first revision of a page is not necessary the author of the article currently at that name, for example, as in this case, if their edit was to create a redirect. Please feel free to AfD it, and please modify your bot so it doesn't make mistakes like this. -- The Anome (talk) 22:51, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

The only way to fix that would be to remove notifying the page creator when no other editors have made a major contribution. BJTalk 10:31, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Unhappy

Don't delete User:Kitty53/Andi Whaley. Eversince you sent me that message, I began to feel like I'd lose my hard work. Then someone would have to recreate it, and I'd have to go through it being kept deleted, so then getting it recreated would take days, weeks, months, or possibly years!

For that, I hope you are a kind Wikipedian, unlike Od Mishehu, who rarely gives out barnstars (hence his unkindness), because I am in a bad mood, and it's preventing me from sleeping! Please, don't delete my subpage. I don't feel like I am good at making notable articles on Wikipedia anymore. In fact, I don't think I am, anymore.

I just wanted to save my hard work from getting lost. Any work that gets created, if deleted eventually, the creator of that article can never recreate it him or herself. And that's not fair. For example, I have lost some articles that suffered last year from deletion. I could not get it notable enough, and I lost them, I felt, permanently.

I don't want my newly created subpage to be gone. I need your kindness and you to cheer me up.:'-( (Please respond on my talk page, and be polite, because I am not in a good mood right now, and neither am I having a good night's sleep.)Kitty53 (talk) 07:16, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Your bot notified the creator within a few seconds of the prod tag. Is it supposed to work so fast?[6] --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 00:16, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

This is the second complaint on the subject and I can't think of an easy way to fix it. It runs every 15 minutes off a cronjob, so you just got (un)lucky. I could run it less often but if you prod or afd a page near the run time it still might beat you to it. BJTalk 00:49, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Facts about the element Nickel

This bot left a notification about the prod tag on the talk page of this article, which is redundant. It should have only left notification of the prod on the talk page of the article's author/sole contributor. Just FYI. -- Atamachat 22:22, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

In reference to User:Rebelyell2006/Mastifs, I nominated my own page to be deleted. I know it is the function of the bot to notify me that the page was nominated to be deleted, but still, it is somewhat pointless, and plus the time the bot used to notify me could have been used to do something else. Images for talk pages?

I presume that posting an image for discussion on talk pages is bad? I posted three images of a certain Wikipedia page in three different browsers to illustrate a template problem, but they're apparently orphaned, so saith BJBot.

Now, here's one of them: Special:Whatlinkshere/Image:Railway_line_header_breaks_in_IE.png -- the Whatlinkshere mechanism covers user pages and talk pages, but the bot doesn't.

Is this a bug, or a policy? I assume BJBot's reasoning is that talk pages referencing image don't count under the assumption that the images were created for an article -- am I right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ghiraddje (talkcontribs) 23:47, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

"Orphaned fair use" due to page blanking

Hello. I don't know if this is a massively unlikely blip, but your bot has flagged Image:UNCLOS_logo.gif as "orphaned fair use" a couple of times in the past few days (and messaged me about it), in both cases because a vandal had blanked the only article that was using the image. The blanking had been reverted by another bot, in both cases, in less than a minute. If this happens frequently, is it worth considering a way to catch and prevent such overenthusiasm? Or would your bot have checked the article again later, if I'd left it alone? --McGeddon (talk) 16:23, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

No, no that isn't it. It is the recurring mediawiki bug that keep coming back. As of this comment the images has to file links but it is in use on the article. BJTalk 22:04, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Staine AfD

Imagine my surprise when I get the message that Staine was nominated for AfD. I got tired of continually replacing the G3 tag that the real author had kept removing, so I nominated it for AfD and reported the guy for repeated vandalism after he'd been blocked last week. Turns out that while TW was still processing the page to tag for AfD, it had already been deleted. TW ended up recreating the page so it could put the AfD tag on it. So I end up nominating a page I created for AfD. Sigh. DarkAudit (talk) 15:38, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Music single cover image problem

This bot labeled an image I recently uploaded as orphaned on my talk page, but in the message it had no links to the image in question. When I looked into it I found the article is way intended for lists the image as a red link, and since then I cannot make the image link to it. I think the article and this bot are having the same problem with the image's name, specifically the 7" being used as meaning seven inch sized single.

Here is the image link: File:Garbage milk 7" UK cover.jpg. Although it red links here too it does works on my contribs page. If this is the issue please let my know and I'll see about renaming it, or getting it deleted and uploading with another name instead.

Orphaned non-free media

Hello,

Up From the Ashes screenshots are not orphaned. If you look at the St. Helens (film) article, you'll see that they're being used as inline link references to a section of the "Factual Errors contained in the movie" section

I'd appreciate not tagging my images without not having first looked at the Fair Use Rationale and image caption first. Srosenow 98 (talk) 06:15, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

The image has to be used, not just linked to meet the WP:NFCC guidelines. BJTalk 07:07, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
How does one expect an image to be used when directly inserting it into the article isn't the best way about it? Ya don't necessarily have to directly insert an image "as a thumbnail" to consider it being "used" as opposed to being abandoned. I think it's a bit presumptous to consider it abandoned when there's an inline link to it in an article. As far as I know, and the last time this occurred, all that was necessary was some information via a Fair Use Rationale indicating that it's being used as an inline link reference, and there would be no issues. If I'm wrong, please let me know, but I think it's a bit over the line considering an image abandoned when there's obviously a link to it in some fashion. Srosenow 98 (talk) 06:55, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
I didn't make the rule, I just wrote the bot enforcing it. As the policy currently stands any fair use image has to be used (not linked) in at least one article. BJTalk 07:16, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Would you mind showing me the exact line, then? I'm seeing the "One article minimum" line, but nowhere do I see it saying it has to be used instead of inlining. Srosenow 98 (talk) 07:25, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
"Non-free content is used in at least one article." #7, it isn't very clear but in all my time here that is how it has been enforced (and the bot was approved). BJTalk 08:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
I agree it's a very vague rule, but at the same time, common sense dictates that even an inline link (rather than a thumbnail link) means that it's being used at least in some fashion (therefore, the image in question isn't "abandoned"). Sure, it may look abandoned, but being used as an inline link reference kinda says "Hey, it's not best to throw up a thumbnail link here, so I'll provide a link reference instead." And given Wikipedia's policy on external links, an external link reference may be misconstrued as linkspam if I uploaded the exact same images in question to my own webserver. Inline link references to nonfree media count just as well and are just as equal as putting up a thumbnail link, or via any other method. If I sound like I'm beating the proverbial dead horse here, I apologize, but I'm merely stating web development fact and common sense.Srosenow 98 (talk) 12:59, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Rules are rules. For it to count as not being orphaned it needs to be used, and that means an actual image. Not a link. CWii(Talk|Contribs) 16:16, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, if that's the case, I think the rules should be changed to match web development common sense instead of just being there out of Wikipedia's often nonsensical bureaucracy (which in this case doesn't make a lick of sense at all). Just because it's merely being linked to doesn't mean it's abandoned. Anyone with any website development experience should know that.Srosenow 98 (talk) 08:42, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Possible bug with the bot....

Hi BJ,

Your bot just made this edit to User:Boomgaylove, an indefinitely-blocked sockpuppet of User:QRC2006. It seems this simply happened because your bot followed the redirect link on the talk page and posted its message normally.

I understand that following talk page redirects can be useful in instances where a user redirects the talk page of a legitimate second account to their main account, but it seems that making posts regardless of where the redirect winds up might be problematic. Is it possible to code in a namespace check to make sure that the bot is in user talk space before making an edit? I don't know if you've implemented it in your code, but I believe the Mediawiki API should offer a way to do this. It's not a big deal, but I thought I'd ask and see. Proposed Deletions of gay porn stars entries

I don't know if this is the proper way to proceed, but since I was sent two messages referring to two different articles (Dominik Trojan and Johan Volny) marked for deletion, I thought I should make a couple of comments. A lot of purging has been going on recently, and it just confirms what I've been thinking for some time, that Wikipedia has no room for gay porn. Most remarkable is the insistence in applying rules and procedures that, in their very expression, only refer to straight porn. To put it simply, the respective weights and public surfaces of straight porn and gay porn ensure that it is much more difficult to dig up published and reliable sources, and this is even more the case when it comes to the European side. So this is scholarship in the making, and it seems particularly regrettable to stifle within the straitjacket of principles, that allow no concern for the specifics of a film genre and its cultural meaning for the gay community and beyond. The way filmographies have been mutilated without any concern for which films should be kept, as the editor had of course no knowledge whatsoever of those films is to me typical. I am an academic by training and I now work in publishing and I think such bureaucratic procedures are not compatible with the advancement of knowledge. A final remark: of the two entries I was sent a warning about, one is now "safe", since the model in question had in fact received an award. But this particular award has no real value as the awards were entirely set up and paid for by the very studio the model is under exclusive contract with. So this is advertising and publicity, and Wikipedia will go along and give its blessing to a publicity stunt by a studio which is, at the very least controversial, with its trademark relentless push for "bareback", i.e. risky sexual intercourse in a context ripe with HIV and AIDS. Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut

Thanks for your note about images. The logo image that appeared in the article about the foundation (the article was deleted yesterday), and all the other images I tried to upload (I'm new at this!) are owned/licensed by the foundation and I was using them with their permission. Let me know if I should have done anything differently. The logo image that had been in the article may be used in a future Wikipedia article on the foundation. Do I need to do anything about it now? The other images were my early, failed attempts to get the logo right. I could not figure out how to remove them from the Wikipedia system. Can you tell me how - or offer any other advice on this topic?

And more. I think that it would be fair to propose for delition also the similar ones." Adrian Comollo (talk) 15:26, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Concerning this diff, and this diff.

The image's author uploaded the image. The author authorized its use for this discussion:

This fair-use image is not for use in an article, but it is relevant to the above discussion. The above discussion links to the image. So the image needs to be retained. It is not an orphaned image.

I have linked to the image from the discussion. Previously, it was inlined in the discussion. Linking avoids fair-use bot problems. --Timeshifter (talk) 13:28, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Fair use images must be used in one article. BJTalk 17:18, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
I read that there are exceptions.
The image helps illustrates a bug:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13252
User:Yegg13, the reporter of the bug, is also the creator of the image. See User talk:Yegg13 also. The bug has already been commented on. So I don't think it would be a good idea to delete the image. It is necessary for improving Wikipedia. This is a common-sense exception.--Timeshifter (talk) 18:00, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm baffled

Would you please tell me what exactly this bot meant to tell me a moment ago? As far as I can see that message was the most useless message I ever recieved. --Camaeron (talk) 18:06, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Are you human?

I am a bit confused... you (this bot) marked my article with {{prod}} - I came here to ask the reason for this, because I would like a hint on how to improve the article. i.e. what was the editors reason for marking the article as {{prod}}? Now I find that the editor is a bot... I am confused... is the function of this bot to just mark pages for deletion? Am I talking to anyone now? Sorry for being dumb - it just seems like wp gets more and more complex every day! --Dan|(talk) 11:20, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

F90.jpg

F90.jpg is now linked to an article. So can you remove that deletion tag ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Roaring Siren (talkcontribs) 07:34, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphan messages on article talk pages

Your bot recently edited my talk page to show me that Image:Devdas.jpg was now orphaned. This, usefully, allowed me to solve the problem of a user mistake removing the image. However, lots of editors who upload images then leave Wikipedia and so the images just get deleted because no one notices. I was wondering if you could also make your bot post a message to the article talk page. This might not always be possible since it is no longer used on a page but at least with images like Image:Devdas.jpg there is a section called "air use for Devdas (2002 film)" and the images using the fair use template specifically say for use for which articles. Could you make your bot post on the article talk so that more users can fix the problem when it actually is a mistake by an anonymous editor, etc. gren グレン 17:54, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Glenn Strange \ Lon Chaney Jr.

I have made correct specifications that were needed for one photograph. I am currently working on the next one. The purpose is for information to the article. Thanks! Electric Japan (talk) 13:15, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Glenn Strange Picture

Could you add some advice on how to get it up right on the profile. I thought I added relevant information. Thanks! Electric Japan (talk) 14:18, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

OK.I am going to stick to this information. I just wanted to add some relevant information on Wikipedia. That was it. Very simple.

Thank you. Electric Japan (talk) 14:44, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up

On the possible deletion of my biostub on Miguelito el Heredero. I've added several sources. Should I now remove the deletion template or will that be done by others?Pr4ever (talk) 13:34, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned media error

Image:Dawsonscreekalbumcover1.jpg is used in the article Dawson's Creek as noted by Karlhahn, there appears to be a problem at current with your bot's image links checking. --Matthew K (talk) 04:28, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

As per above, this is a Mediawiki problem, if "File links" doesn't show it used it will get tagged. BJTalk 05:03, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

The TW logo was accidentally orphaned: it is now unorphaned. Neil Leslie (talk) 02:58, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Orphaned non-free media (Image:MadisonCtTownSeal.jpg)

This image is used in Madison, Connecticut. There is apparently some tech failure in the WP mechanism that reports on the image-page what links to it. Karl Hahn (T) (C) 14:27, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

The bot has flagged this one again. I have again added a note just below the orphan-tag indicating what page links to this image. Karl Hahn (T) (C) 17:05, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
It shows up as used now, so it won't be tagged again. BJTalk 02:04, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Whitelist me.

Hi, as I upload all my stuff to commons, anything I upload on enwiki is on behalf of other people. You (your bot) may feel free to tag these images for deletion *without* notifying me. In other words, I'm not interested in the messages. Thank you. Bastique repondez 16:28, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

userpage

Can you please add the link to Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/BJBot_4 on your userpage. A simple explanation of the tasks would be good also. -- maelgwn - talk 09:34, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

It was on there but I removed it as I planned to switch the task 4 to the NotifyBot account. BJTalk 15:41, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Derek Roddy, deletion?

As you can see, i've expanded the article about Derek Roddy a bit (it's still not as elaborate as preferrable) and i don't get why it should still be deleted. If you follow the links on the page, you can see he has contributed to quite a lot of albums (even more, but the rest i couldn't find yesterday) and is a well-known drummer. Orphaned non-free media (Image:AmericanCousinsDVDCover.JPG)

I received a message saying this image was going to be deleted as it was orphaned non-free media. It is in fact on the American Cousins (2003 feature film) page. Phersu (talk) 17:47, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:2004-06-27 Obverse THAMMASAT UNIVERSITY 70th yea.jpg)

I thought to put this at Thai baht, but that won't work as Thailand has entirely too many commemorative coins. And a separate article on Thai commemoratives would be a perpetual work in progress. I've pasted it to Thammasat University for now, but that's problematic, too--the obverse and reverse should be paired on a black background to conform to Wikipedia standards for coin images. I may just need to start over. Meanwhile, since the reverse shows the university's seal, I'm planning on adding to TU's article links to both Democracy Monument and Dharmacakra to explain what it means. It would be nice to show the coin, too, and likewise post other commemoratives to articles to which they would relate. Sometime. Pawyilee (talk) 18:35, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Both of the above are indeed orphaned. I combined them into one paired image (Image:10-baht THAMMASAT UNIVERSITY 70th yr 2004-06-27.jpg)(still with a white background) and put that at Thammasat University under Seal. Pawyilee (talk) 15:48, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

OK

Thank you fot the relevant info. I appreciate it. Electric Japan (talk) 13:14, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Just Wondering

How do you become an administrator on wikipedia, or is there only one? Because since you are an admin and i saw your page and it showed a red button that you are refering to non admin's and admin's.

I'm not an admin. :) But to become one you file a request at WP:RFA and the community has a discussion if you would be a good admin. BJTalk 12:51, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

AFD

Another editor was quite confused by this bot recently - see Talk:Back garden. I didn't quite understand but now I've had an AFD warning from this bot too. This may be helpful but it would be even better if the user page for the bot explained more clearly what was going on. And is this use of the bot authorised? About my picture.

I do not know how to delete my own picture, but since you said you have done it, i want to thank you for doing it for me. I am not really interested in communism much anymore, since i got rid of the two boxes that were affilated with communism on my user page, though i am still connected to communism on some aspects, such as peace and equality.

Feel free to comment on my user page at anytime.

Thanks.
