edit

I deeply appreciate your work here, but please read biographical articles before sending your bot to make changes. The article on Robert Boyer (artist) clearly states more than once that he died in 2004. He is not a living person. ---Mumun 21:05, 15 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I added the missing Category:2004 deaths category as well. -- User:Docu

...if only bcz it's reassuring (even if no less embarrassing), now that i've caught onto my mistake, to see that i was far from the only one enthusiastically editing in crap! I don't even regret checking its thoroughness on mine, before seeing that it worked from an alpha list, bcz i suppose that "penance" on my part was a good exercise toward responding, next time, to that nagging uncertainty abt which is the format. Hope you'll keep up the good work.

Thanks for updating all those links to the GNIS. One thing: {{gnis}} shows the page name — including disambiguation — unless you add display text: {{gnis|000000}} shows as U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: D6, while {{gnis|000000|InsertNameHere}} shows as U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: InsertNameHere.
—wwoods 15:31, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

So, I fixed {{gnis3}} to correctly point to Antarctic GNIS entries. I've rewritten {{usgs-gazetteer}} (a reference section for Antarctic geography articles) to use {{gnis3}} if the Antarctic ID is known.
Here's a challenge for you: there are thousands of stubby Antarctic articles that use {{usgs-gazetteer}}. Can D6 both look up the ID in GNIS and modify the article to use that ID? This is so daunting, I certainly don't want to do it by hand.
Thanks for any help you can provide! hike395 09:45, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the information and the suggestion. I might look into this. If the full list is available, an intermediary solution would be to use a switch in the template to provide the id, e.g.
{{#switch:{{PAGENAME}}
|Marsh Glacier=9458
|Nimod Glacier=10737
|Recovery Glacier=.. etc
|else}}

Portal:Switzerland/Stub

edit

I'm just trawling through the stub templates, trying to get some standardisation, and came across this - would it be difficult to drive it off the stub categories? Just a general query (although it would remove a tiny bit of complexity for me), as I'm thinking about whatlinkshere tags (for other reasons) as well. Rich Farmbrough, 08:57 28 September 2007 (GMT).

Not sure how it would be much of a problem for standardisation of the rest of the content of the stub template. I use it to generate Portal:Switzerland/New articles. If there isn't much demand for that list, I could discontinue it. -- User:Docu

Editing user pages

edit

I notice that in 2006, this bot made this edit to User:Jonathan Potts's userpage. Does it still do that, or has it been fixed? --DocumentN (talk) 01:33, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's a manually assisted bot-edit. Why would it be problematic? User:Jonathan Potts seems ok with it. -- User:Docu
"By convention your user page will usually not be edited by others." Speaking for myself, I'd rather be allowed to fix ambiguous links on my userpage or let them stand at my own discretion. --DocumentN (talk) 08:06, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm quite cautious about it and, Jonathan Potts seems ok with it. If he had written, "I live in Atlanta, Georgia" is likely he would want it to be fixed to "I live in Atlanta, Georgia".
Anyways, you may want to place {{nobots}} on your user page. -- User:Docu
I decided to do this instead. --DocumentN (talk) 23:22, 26 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

adding WikiProject Lakes banner

edit

If you have a spare moment you could try pointing your bot at List of lakes in England, List of lakes in Wales etc. The thought of doing it manually is daunting ! Velela (talk) 16:20, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

For now it's doing articles with {{Infobox lake}}, but I may try a few subcategories of Category:Lakes later. BTW WP:AWB offers a module to do the tagging as well. -- User:Docu
Apparently your D6 bot upset some Gaelic/Irish/Scottish folks? by adding the "WP Lakes" banner to some lochs' or loughs' Talk page? I am not sure what the exact issue is? There are apparently lochs and (small) loughs, and both can be either fresh or tidal waters (not sure how they tell the difference - for Wikipedia they should have different Categories). I do not know if the issue has to do with the word "lake" or with those which are tidal waters? Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Lakes#Cultural sensitivity LeheckaG (talk) 18:37, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
{{Infobox lake}} shouldn't be on Carlingford Lough, as it's a sea lough. This lead to banner being added to Talk:Carlingford Lough. -- User:Docu

Did you do the banner on this lake, too? Thanks. 16:56, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Stan

There is no article yet. Would you write it first? -- User:Docu
Now that the section header was changed from Grand Lake (Alpena, Michigan) to Grand Lake (Presque Isle, Michigan), this is much clearer .. please check Talk:Grand Lake (Presque Isle, Michigan). -- User:Docu

A request

edit

Hi there. I see this bot created all those "YYYY births" and "YYYY deaths" categories. Is it possible that you set the bot so that it operates on the Macedonian Wikipedia? The templates are working fine, which means everything the bot has to do is create the cat's with the appropriate template and add the interwikis. Please contact me as soon as possible, and thanks in advance! (By the way "Indeed. -- User:Docu" made me laugh out loud, which is pretty rare these days :D) --iNkubusse? 03:14, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can try to do that, but I'd need to adapt the bot, the pywikipedia framework has changed since I last used it to generate such categories. Besides, I'm not sure if I can't get the charset part to work. Can you create the equivalent categories for Category:2007 deaths and Category:2008 deaths and two birth year categories? I will then try if I can adapt it. BTW is there a Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval page on mk.wikipedia.org ? -- User:Docu
I'm here for all the language adaptations needed. Here are the equivalent categories:
In Macedonian, the 'births' and 'deaths' part comes before the year. 'Rodeni vo' and 'Pochinati vo' literally means 'Born in' and 'Deceased in'. You just have to change the places of the two arguments, and translate the births/deaths, like this:
{{{yr}}} births -> Родени во {{{yr}}}
{{{yr}}} deaths -> Починати во {{{yr}}}
Though I hope the Cyrillic alphabet will not cause you troubles. :/ BTW, {{Birthyr}} works just fine.
As for the requests, you can freely add a simple request at mk:Википедија:Портал/Други јазици (it's a village pump for all requests in foreign languages), or you can ask mk:User:Misos (talk) on his talk page. --iNkubusse? 15:52, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see you're starting mk:Корисник:D6 category bot. :) Please let me know if you need anything. --iNkubusse? 15:21, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Somewhat, I love unicode .. It looks like it works now: mk:Категорија:Родени во 1901, mk:Категорија:Родени во 1902, mk:Категорија:Родени во 1903, mk:Категорија:Починати во 1901, mk:Категорија:Починати во 1902, mk:Категорија:Починати во 1903 (Not that I understand the category names). What do you think of it? How many years do you think should be done? -- User:Docu

It's really simple: Born in 1901 and Died in 1901. :D I think it's going pretty well, no side effects, no anomalies. As for how many, I'm not sure if we need the years before 1000 AD... But 1000-2008 are needed for sure. What about the Decade births/deaths and Century births/deaths? Can you create them as well? I'll fix the templates, that's settled. --iNkubusse? 19:53, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can you do two sample categories for the decades? For the centuries, I'd prefer that you do them manually, there aren't that many. -- User:Docu
Sure, right away. And you're right about the centuries. --iNkubusse? 15:55, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Here they are:
{{{yr}}}s births becomes Родени во {{{yr}}}-тите
{{{yr}}}s deaths becomes Починати во {{{yr}}}-тите
Note: there is no need for the 'th' in {{birthdecade|19|7|20th}} and deathdecade. Only {{deathdecade|19|7|20}}. I hope it's clear. --iNkubusse? 16:12, 18 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes it is. I made the corresponding request on mk:Википедија:Портал/Други јазици#Request bot flag for User:D6 category bot. -- User:Docu
It's done. -- User:Docu

Point?

edit

What is the point of such edit (there were at least a few on my watchlist)? It just replaced capital D with lowercase d. At least it would used the {{coord}} instead of the depreciated one. Now I think it's just a waste of bandwidth. Renata (talk) 00:23, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Second that. Have you nothing else to do?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:59, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I tend to agree, but as WikiProject templatetiger has some problems consolidating them if caps or spacing aren't correct [1] [2]. As there are comparatively few (approx. 1%), I think it's preferable to fix them in the articles. -- User:Docu
Thanks for the explanation, but wouldn't it be simpler to fix the problem at the source than having to make trivial edits to thousands (which is what even 1% boils down to) articles? You can't fix them all, either. Quite a few editors (including yours truly) actually prefer to spell the template names with an initial cap—it makes no difference for the output, but looks cleaner in the source. I doubt anyone cares about that so much as to go ahead and actually revert your changes (which would be a stupid endeavor indeed), but you should expect such editors to restore the template names back to initial cap when an edit needs to be done to an article anyway. Just some food for thought. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 16:38, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Apparently not? Anyway, could you, please, at least use an account with a bot flag for these pointless edits, as they overwhelm my watchlist quite a bit? Also, as Renata3 suggested, you could indeed try making this mass-run at least marginally useful by substituting {{coor}} with {{coord}}. Thanks.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:35, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
As there were just a few (100s) such occurrences, most are fixed now. Let's see the next update of templatetiger.
BTW I doubt there is a big advantage to worth switching to {{coord}}, at least [3] looks difficult to maintain. At least you'd need to parse it first to find the ones to fix. -- User:Docu
I don't remember the details, but {{coor}} is definitely being phased out in favor of {{coord}}. The latter seems more intuitive and flexible, but I, of course, can't tell how it looks from the point of view of a project such as templatetiger.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 13:29, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Stephen Eyre

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Stephen Eyre, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Terraxos (talk) 23:59, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

coordinates?

edit

Is there any particular reason this bot insists on changing {{coor dms... to {{coor at dms... in the lake infobox as in Angle Lake? I had just changed that because (in my browser anyway) it causes the coordinates to print right over the horizontal line at the top. Anyway the coordinates are in the infobox so it's superfluous to have them a few lines above. (Maybe when I get my camera fixed and add an image it may be moot). I'll change it back for now and hope it remains. Gr8white (talk) 00:48, 9 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Most pages with {{infobox lake}} use this format. The description of the infobox suggest to use it. The title line of the article is where coordinates are most of the time. To avoid that the bot changes it once more, you can add {{bot|deny=D6}} to the article. -- User:Docu
Stylistically that sucks, imo, even if the coordinates don't conflict with the line (I've seen several where the line crosses the middle of the coordinates, and I don't have a non-standard browser). I don't know of any other type of article where a certain piece of info floats outside the body of the article. Was there a consensus at some time to do this? Cities of the Ancient Near East

edit

Dude, your Bot screwed up Cities of the ancient Near East!! Note the extra brackets that appeared at the end of many lines. You might want to take a look before I revert it. And, your bot should have "bot" in the name. Ploversegg (talk) 15:45, 1 October 2008 (UTC)ploverseggReply

And it messed up Mursili's eclipse too!! Better slow this bot down before it does a lot of dammage!!
Thanks Ploversegg (talk) 16:12, 1 October 2008 (UTC)ploverseggReply

There is nothing wrong with Mursili's eclipse. It's formatted as it should.

The problem with Cities of the ancient Near East is that the name= parameter includes words in square brackets. Apparently {{coord}} doesn't like that. I will bring it up on Template talk:Coord. In the meantime I will fix Cities of the ancient Near East. -- User:Docu

Well, before the line on Musili's eclipse was
44.9° N 85.7° E (Tian Shan)
now it's
44.9, 85.7 (Tian Shan)
so what happened to the north, south, and degree chars?
Ploversegg (talk) 20:01, 1 October 2008 (UTC)ploverseggReply
It's formally correct, but there should indeed be a better way to display it. I brought it up on Template_talk:Coord#N.2FS_and_E.2FW_display_for_decimals. -- User:Docu

Category African Americans in Wikimedia Commons

edit

Hello. I posted a question on the Wikimedia Village Pump and someone suggested that your bot might be able to help. Here is the problem (in Wikimedia, not Wikipedia). Thanks!----Kenmayer (talk) 15:04, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! I'm trying to put some order to the category African Americans. Most of the 600+ images need to be reclassified. There are over 100 maps which have been mislabeled by a bot uploader. Is there any way an admin could reclassify these quickly?

The images are locator maps for Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, and North Carolina. Here are links to representative images

It's possible that the bot put these into African Americans because they all have Category:Demographics of the United States. That category and category African Americans have some overlap.

Would it be possible to remove the African American category from files which begin with GAMap, MDMap, MOMap, or NCMa

Unfortunately, only the Missouri and Georgia maps have a category Category:Locator maps of cities in Missouri and Category:Locator maps of cities in Georgia (U.S. state)

I don't relish opening each image, clicking edit, and deleting the African American category.

Can anyone help me, perhaps by pointing me to a tool I can use? Thanks! --Kenmayer (talk) 15:57, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Redirect of Tore Kannelonning

edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Tore Kannelonning, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Tore Kannelonning is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Tore Kannelonning, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Hi just a note. If you are creating stubs based on fuller articles from German wikipedia please add a {{Expand German|Article name on German wikipedia}} tag at the top of the page. This means that the article will be flagged for fuller translation later. You may apply this to any article which has fuller contwent on German wikipedia, most of the German municipalities and landmarks probably. Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:30, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

This probably applies to almost all articles about locations in Germany/Switzerland/Austria. Thus I'd rather not add that. There already is a stub tag. -- User:Docu
By not adding the tag you are blocking a direct effort to get these articles translated. Please examine the tag and its purpose which a stub tag can never achieve. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:17, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi, D6, Blofeld just let me know about this conversation. I would also encourage you to use them, especially because it the template includes a direct link to a machine translation. This means that even users who don't speak German can benefit from the contents of the German wiki, in a relatively seamless manner. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:22, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Actually I don't know if the bot should be adding them, now that I look at the articles being generated and their German counterparts. Many but by no means all (maybe not even most) of the German article have enough that they should be tagged. I think human review of these is probably best. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:27, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
If there is a consensus to use that tag on a large number of articles, it could be added to by bot to geo-stubs related to locations in Germany/Switzerland/Austria where the content in that wikipedia is longer. Note that the WikiProjects about the three countries have about 30000 stubs. You might want to bring this up in a better forum. -- User:Docu

Yes for these small lakes most of them are not fuller articles on German wikipedia so perhaps the tags wouldn't be applied. They should however be applied to those articles which have fuller articles on German wikipedia as they are intended as a sort of bridge for information to expand. Keep up the good work with starting these anyhow regardless of tags. Best Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:50, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Coord Missing?

edit

Hi. I just saw you removed the {{coord missing}} template from FieraMilano where I had earlier added coordinates (not noticing the "missing" tag at all): thank you for that. I had never seen the "missing" template before, and honestly, looking back at the revisions, I could not spot any difference in the "rendered" page with or without that template. Is it some kind of a "stealth" template which just appears in source but doesn't output anything in rendering? --Andylong (talk) 23:52, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

{{coord missing}} populates (hidden) categories such as Category:Italy articles missing geocoordinate data.
To view hidden categories, you need to activate them in Special:Preferences. Under "Misc", there is "Show hidden categories".
Don't worry about not removing the template, the bot doesn't mind removing them. -- User:Docu

Proposed deletion of Brian Giovannini

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Brian Giovannini, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Notability not verified. All Google hits for ""Brian Giovannini" "postage due"" appear to be mirrors of the Wikipedia article, or self-published sources such as wikis. The impressive number of mirrors is due to the article's creation date: 2003...

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BC coordinates from fr:wiki

edit

Hi; I've replaced a few of these so far, drawing on the official latlongs in BCGNIS, which are also the same as those in CGNDB. Don't konw what the sources for those in fr:wiki are but I'd suggest that BC entries in fr:wiki be brought up to officialdom by using BCGNIS as a source there; fr:siki is not a reliable source in and of itself, of course. Fixed Brocklehurst's after your this-morning edit, just saw D'Arcy's which, again, shoudl use a BC-based official source rather than a source in la francophonie or a GoogleMaps location. To use BCGNIS just go to the link on that page and use their search/query; once coords using that source are in place, you can add {{BCGNIS}} as a ref, but note the syntax in {{BCGNIS|###|name of item in BCGNIS}} as, for example, in Brocklehurst's case, it would display as "Brocklehurst, British Columbia" rather than "Brocklehurst (Community)", which is preferred; the reasons for this will be self-evident as your explore BCGNIS searches a bit as there may be several entries for what seem like the same entry. - Skookum1

Further to previous, I just used the coords for D'Arcy you just provided and they're wildly off, by about two miles - they're at Devine, British Columbia, not at D'Arcy. I'll amend with the proper coordinates from BCGNIS; and I suggest that you might spend some time fixing fr:wikipedia's coordinates, as they're clearly not valid, whatever source they're coming from, rather than transferring any more coordinaes from fr:wiki into en:wiki..... Thanks. Skookum1

Personally, I don't think 2 miles off is that far compared to others in Wikipedia. Obviously a high degree of precision is desirable, but isn't or can't always be attained. We discussed at WT:GEO how to go about the import of coordinates and which precautions to take to avoid errors. This to make sure that Wikipedians at other wikis did mean to code the same location.

BCGNIS isn't necessarily much more precise as their degree of precision seems to be 1' (compare the table at WP:GEO#Precision). Their degree of precision has the advantage that conversion from Albers shouldn't be an issue [4]. Anyways, if you can convince them to upload their gazetteer to wikipedia, this would be great.

The bot wont import coordinates to any place that already has coordinates, once all on [5] or [6] are done it will be over. I doubt frwiki has coordinates for all of those, though. For now, just four sets were of BC. -- User:Docu

edit

Are these edits automated or are you reviewing them individually? If they are automatic, you need to file a WP:BRFA. –xeno (talk) 19:00, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Are there any that are problematic? -- User:Docu
Not necessarily; this doesn't preclude the requisite steps of bot approval if they are automated. –xeno (talk) 19:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Can I understand that you don't think that any of the edits as such are problematic? - User:Docu
I haven't reviewed them all in depth. However, judging by this talk page, people have brought concerns about this bot's operation in the past. I understand you're from "the old school" (and I respect your length of service to Wikipedia), but we have processes in place these days to formally review and approve bots. –xeno (talk) 19:52, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm always open to answer questions. This is what this talk page is for. You probably understand that I can't do too many of the type of requests I did for the mk wiki.
It's good that the developers and the board don't have to do everything anymore, as such the BAG is a good thing. However, you probably noted that a member of the current BAG group pointed out that this bot had been approved by one of his predecessors.
It's a bit odd that you bring this up as you mentioned, that these WP:WPCHECK fixes should be ok. BTW I'd still appreciate if you could help us with the project (to take up your offer from the other day). -- User:Docu
I believe he was commenting on the bot's name, not its unapproved tasks.
My comment that the fixes are ok was simply saying that they weren't "insignificant". It didn't mean that I felt you need not to seek approval for these tasks, especially if they will be ongoing. I understand and sometimes IAR just to do a one-off task with my bot, but for prolonged tasks, community input and approval is desired for transparency. It's really not as painful as you might think, I've recently applied for a new task for my bot and it only took me a few minutes.
I tried fixing some of the articles using AWB (on my alt Xenocidic) but AWB doesn't seem to recognize these errors yet, so I ended up just fixing typos mostly. –xeno (talk) 20:47, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I noticed that you did some unapproved tasks with your bot account. This really made me wonder why you came up with all those posts .. oh it was April 1. This makes me wonder, how do you decide now for which task you will seek additional approval? BTW at WP:GEO, we noticed the other day that 20,000 coordinates still need fixing despite that a BAG reviewed and approved operation went through them.
As for WP:WPCHECK, I tried to figure out which tasks AWB could do (not that it's my preferred tool) .. not really easy, especially since as we work through the lists, even more unusual items remain. --- User:Docu
I would say; if it's a one-off task that won't likely be repeated, then approval is probably a bit of a waste. For prolonged/sustainted tasks (like this WP CHECK WP thing) should have approval. Jmho. Best regards, –xeno (talk) 21:53, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, the main cleanup for most of these WP:WPCHECK fixes is done. We now need to find new ways for the reminder.
In regards to your own bot, I don't share your opinion, but I can understand it. -- User:Docu

Hi D6 - I've noticed that this bot (and occasional editors) have been changing "Image:" to "File:" lately. What's this about? It seems to me to be replacing a clear and specific keyword with something less specific, for no obvious benefit. Colonies Chris (talk) 09:10, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi D6,

I saw your editing on the Albannach (album) and I was wondering if you could look over these which I created yesterday.

Hi. As starters for albums they look ok to me, I rarely edit albums though. You might want to add {{album|class=Stub|importance=|auto=}} to their talk pages. If you find some reviews, you could add them to the articles. At WikiProject Albums, you might find further hints for expansion. -- User:Docu

ndashes in Batavian Republic

edit

I noticed that you removed the "ndashes" I put into the references of the Batavian Republic article at the express request of the reviewer of that article, who made those "ndashes" a prerequisite for GA-status as per MOS:ENDASH. (See Talk:Batavian Republic/GA2) Are you trying to get the GA-status revoked? Please explain?--Ereunetes (talk) 23:55, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you look closely at the article (not in edit mode), you will notice that the display hasn't changed. The endash is still there, simply the HTML named entity –(–) was converted into its unicode equivalent – (–). This makes the article more readable in edit mode. You may revert it if you prefer the first version though. It's unlikely this would lead to the removal of GA-status (IMHO)-- User:Docu
Thanks for the explanation. I won't revert it. Personally, I couldn't care less, but according to my reviewer some people get hot under the collar if they don't see an endash. You have put my mind at rest:-)--Ereunetes (talk) 20:05, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of X?á:ytem

edit

A tag has been placed on X?á:ytem requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Coord missing

edit

Hi, Docu! Just wanted to let you know that I reverted the addition of the {{coord missing}} template to the articles on Russian republics (example) because I incorporated the coordinates support into {{Infobox Russian federal subject2}} instead. Now, if the coordinates in the infobox are not supplied, the infobox calls {{coord missing}} automatically. I don't know how you bot detects the pages which do not have the coordinates (if it looks at the presence of the "coords missing" category, it should be fine), but I thought I'd give you a heads up on this so the bot doesn't go back and re-adds the template which is now redundant. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:13, May 8, 2009 (UTC)

I'd have preferred to discuss this before you reverted a series of edits. Pratically, the bot wont readd the template, but some of the fonctions of the template wont work if it's transcluded. Please see Template talk:Coord missing. -- User:Docu

Your edit to Signature Tower

edit

Non-existent buildings don't get coordinates. Adding them to places that don't exist causes lots of peripheral problems, e.g. the building will show up as a location on maps throughout the internet. In the case of buildings where construction has begun (even excavation) this is probably fine, but it's problematic when another business still occupies that space, as is the case with the Signature Tower site. Kaldari (talk) 16:08, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Would you provide me with a link to the relevant guideline? I assume we do agree that for that building the site is determined. -- User:Docu

I see you are removing the coords missing template from pages where I've added coord. Obviously makes sense, and I'd be happy to do it myself, but I'm not see what it looks like. For example, I just added coords to Stephen F. Austin State University but I don't see the template I should remove. Sphilbrick (talk) 19:54, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Never mind, I just scrolled up and read I can't see them and they are removed by a bot.Sphilbrick (talk) 20:02, 17 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ok. Thanks for adding coordinates anyways, don't worry about removing the template. I was just wondering why we didn't add {{coord missing}} to Stephen F. Austin State University in the first place, but we will try to do with other universities in the future.-- User:Docu

Editing ISBN numbers

edit

I notice that D6 has "corrected" the ISBN numbers for "Jonathan Crowther (2006) A-Z of Crosswords, Collins ISBN 978-0-00-722923-9, ISBN 0-00-722923-2" in the Azed article. Those numbers were exactly as printed in the book - I have it in front of me at this moment. Could you explain the reason for the changes, please?

Dinoceras (talk) 13:39, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

On the left side there are several possible formats for ISBN. Mediawiki only recognizes the first two formats and converts them to links to Special:Booksources (see Wikipedia:ISBN). There was a request to change this here, but it didn't go further. -- User:Docu

I thought about this type of articles. It's clearly debatable. The article does list a main location though. If you prefer, you could remove the tag or add the coordinates of the location that is in the infobox. -- User:Docu

Coord How-to

edit

To add 57°18′22″N 4°27′32″W / 57.30611°N 4.45889°W / 57.30611; -4.45889 to the top of an article, use {{Coord}}, thus:

{{Coord|57|18|22|N|4|27|32|W|display=title}}

These coordinates are in degrees, minutes, and seconds of arc.

"title" means that the coordinates will be displayed next to the article's title at the top of the page (in desktop view only; title coordinates do not display in mobile view) and before any other text or images. It also records the coordinates as the primary location of the page's subject in Wikipedia's geosearch API.

To add 44°06′45″N 87°54′47″W / 44.1124°N 87.9130°W / 44.1124; -87.9130 to the top of an article, use either

{{Coord|44.1124|N|87.9130|W|display=title}}

(which does not require minutes or seconds but does require the user to specify north/ south and east/west) or

{{Coord|44.1124|-87.9130|display=title}}

(in which the north and east are presumed by positive values while the south and west are negative ones). These coordinates are in decimal degrees.

  • Degrees, minutes and seconds, when used, must each be separated by a pipe ("|").
  • Map datum must be WGS84 if possible (except for off-Earth bodies).
  • Avoid excessive precision (0.0001° is <11 m, 1″ is <31 m).
  • Maintain consistency of decimal places or minutes/seconds between latitude and longitude.
  • Latitude (N/S) must appear before longitude (E/W).

Optional coordinate parameters follow the longitude and are separated by an underscore ("_"):

Other optional parameters are separated by a pipe ("|"):

  • display
    |display=inline (the default) to display in the body of the article only,
    |display=title to display at the top of the article only (in desktop view only; title coordinates do not display in mobile view), or
    |display=inline, title to display in both places.
  • name
name=X to label the place on maps (default is PAGENAME)

Thus: {{Coord|44.1172|-87.9135|dim:30_region:US-WI_type:event

|display=inline,title|name=accident site}}

Use |display=title (or |display=inline, title) once per article, for the subject of the article, where appropriate.

Coord missing template addition

edit

I have noticed that the bot has been adding the {{Coord missing}} template to articles but has been placing the existing stub templates in articles before the caregories. According to WP:FOOTERS the stub templates should follow categories with two blank lines between them. Can the bot be changed to give the correct ordering rather than having to go round manually after it moving the stubs back to the correct place. Many thanks. Keith D (talk) 20:33, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm aware for this. It's a limitation of the python module that is being used. It should eventually be changed. To some extent, the inconvenience is outweighed by the articles being geocoded. I don't think it's worth fixing the articles manually. -- User:Docu
Update: it's more or less fixed for future additions. Thanks for reminding me. -- User:Docu 22:57, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
Related issue: I attempted to add the coordinates for University_of_Georgia but I'm afraid I don't quite know how to do it properly. I truncated the coordinates to four decimal places. The position listed is Old College, the "heart" of UGA. They are, precisely, 33.955819º N, 83.374461º W. Rapparee71 (talk) 01:03, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I noticed, thanks. I did notice something else, on the GeoHack page: http://stable.toolserver.org/geohack/geohack.php?pagename=University_of_Georgia&params=33.9558_N_-83.3745_E_region:US-GA_type:edu The UTM coordinates are not written properly, they are written in reverse order. They should be written: zone, easting, northing. For example: "17 S 280583 3759796". This is how all UTM coordinates should be written. Can we change this? Do we have any control over this? Rapparee71 (talk) 08:36, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Section header formatting

edit

1. The broken changes by User:PigFlu Oink were never fixed or undone.

2. The new bot is still making incorrect changes to disambiguation pages. Disambiguation page headers at top level is not correct. If disambiguation page headers were incorrect at sublevels, the solution would be to change them to bold. See WP:MOSDAB#Longer lists. This formatting change may also be incorrect for lists. This bot should ignore all non-article pages for now.

3. It is not clear that the automation of this formatting change is productive at all, and the balance of previous and continuing problems makes it counter-productive. Aside from incorrect changes, the list of articles affected by this bot is just a list of articles that need {{cleanup}}, {{copyvio}}, or {{prod}}. A formatting tweak is worthless on a dead broken page, and can be detrimental. —Centrxtalk • 23:15, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

1. We are working on this list. The cleanup advanced much. Given the time it took me to come up with a way to check them and to fix them, I'm not entirely happy with your summary.
2. Is there a sample of a page where you feel its change is incorrect? I looked at Leda you reverted and re-read WP:MOSDAB which references Aurora_(disambiguation) and Wikipedia:Writing_better_articles#Headings, one starts with h2 headers and the second clearly indicates to start with h2 headers. I agree that you don't have to follow MoS to the letter when building pages, but I don't quite understand why you reverted the change.
3. It is always debatable if formatting changes are productive or not, as the content of a page doesn't change by a mere formatting change. Comparing Leslie_Charles_Leach and Leslie Charles Leach, I feel the second looks much more like the usual article in Wikipedia. This due to a slight formatting change. Similar changes were done to another 10,000-15,000 pages, I don't quite see how this could be detrimental.
Looking at this article history, the article has improved a little since its beginning (still needs much), but I think it's more the formatting changes than the cleanup tagging that brought the improvements. In any case, I'd be glad if you would join WikiProject Check Wikipedia and help us. -- User:Docu
1. How is this relevant to the broken changes by User:PigFlu Oink? I do not see what you are referring to. The better the list, the more these articles need manual help.
2. h2 headers in disambiguation pages may be appropriate in a multi-level hierarchy, as in Aurora_(disambiguation), not in a single-level hierarchy. I am not convinced that mere bolded titles are better than h3 or h4 headers, but I do not mass-enforce this by machine. If h3 headers are wrong, their replacement is bolded titles not h2 titles, and the pages usually need other help anyway.
3. I almost saw no difference between the two versions of Leslie Charles Leach. This is one example of a page that is not broken, but it has only one major contributor. Furthermore, this special article had an edit war on this very formatting issue. The overwhelming majority of pages are instead like these three articles, which I instantly found: Brahmbhatt, College health, Cyrk (Art). These pages need to be rewritten or deleted anyway; the section header tweaks do nothing but hide problems. Uralipatti was fixed only by manual intervention; the bot changed only one h2 header, and the header was misspelt. Superficial polish on a broken core needs to be re-done by humans anyway, and is only deceptive. —Centrxtalk • 18:05, 30 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
1. These are pages identified as needing to be reviewed.
2. It might be worth bringing this up on WT:MOSDAB if you really think h3 headers should be used. I don't mind skipping them for now.
3. There is no heading level changes on Brahmbhatt, College health, Cyrk (Art). It's not the general view that bots shouldn't be doing wikitext cleanup. There are many bots that do just that. -- User:Docu

Unexplained and probably harmful bot edit

Hi, about this edit. The reason given is WP Check WP #16, but I can't find any documentation on that other than a name. There's something wrong, though, since the effect of the edit seems to have been to remove a Unicode character whose presence was desired (I believe it was a no-width space, put there to prevent wrong display of phonetic symbols in many browsers - this is a commonly used workaround). Can you ensure the bot doesn't remove any more of these?--Kotniski (talk) 07:11, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

The details on check#16 of WikiProject Check Wikipedia are here. I will double check why they were added there. Apparently, it is a recent AWB task. -- User:Docu 09:34, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Bot readding incorrect coordinates

edit

Please can you stop your bot readding coordinates that have already been removed (as at Golin, Lubusz Voivodeship)? I've spent a lot of time removing such incorrect coordinates, so it seems counterproductive for the bot to keep readding them repeatedly. (Yes, I know in an ideal world I would have removed them from pl.wp as well, plus any other wp's where they might still be hanging around, but one only has a limited amount of time, and there are a lot of these...) Surely the bot could be programmed only to visit a particular article once?--Kotniski (talk) 08:57, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, we discussed this earlier and I thought this was taken care of. What is problematic about the coordinates in pl:Golin (województwo lubuskie) and similar articles: Have the coordinates been made up, are they about another place or just not optimal? -- User:Docu at 06:10, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I guess they're about another place with a similar name. In any case, they lie well outside the municipality which this place is in. I've found quite a lot of these in Polish WP (only a small percentage of the total, of course).--Kotniski (talk) 08:30, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you identified them, it would really be worth fixing them or removing them. Leaving some of the information in really pollutes the data. I will check which ones have been redone and have them skipped in the future. -- User:Docu at 16:16, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I was wondering if you would be interested in this project. Your bot skills would certianly make a fine edition to the team if you could use it to generate list of missing articles from other wikipedias in our new project space. The first stage is to identify what is missing and list it in a directory on here. I came here to make the same point, though as far as I can tell the category in question is the result of Category:Living people being transcluded. Since I don't see much reason for that category's documentation to be on the page of an inactive bot, could the text {{Category:Living people}} be removed? Thanks. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 07:52, 9 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

scheduling is not a valid parameter for template:Infobox holiday

edit

This edit along with others is not correct because template:Infobox holiday does not contain a scheduling parameter. Please revert the change until it is added to the template. Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:56, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Roman holidays

edit

Please stop adding the holiday infobox parameter that indicates when the event will be celebrated next year to articles on ancient Roman holidays. These haven't been celebrated for centuries. Though there may be neopagan reconstructionists who attempt to do so, this has nothing to do with the content of the article. Cynwolfe (talk) 15:28, 6 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

This should allow to solve it. Please comment there. -- 签名 sig at 02:17, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Day of the Dead

edit

Does this really qualify as a 1-day holiday? It's celebrated on two separate days (after sundown nov 1st, and during the day on nov 2nd). You could argue that it's only a 24-hour period (sundown to sundown), but in practice it's thought of as two days. Tarl.Neustaedter (talk) 21:29, 7 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I fixed the template. Thanks for mentioning this. -- 签名 sig at 02:17, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Karl Möbius (SS officer)

edit

The article Karl Möbius (SS officer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not meet WP:SOLDIER & significant RS coverage not found. Successful completion of missions ("tank kills") is not part of soldier, and these numbers are notoriously unreliable anyway.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Lac de Gérardmer moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Lac de Gérardmer, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
