Hello Dinkytown! I have created a list for new or recently de-stubbed articles that relate to the Byzantine Empire. I hope that everyone contributing on the subject will add his/her articles there, so that other interested users will be able to find it easily. BTW, I have tried to find all such articles for 2010, but some may have escaped my notice. If you find any missing, please add them yourself. Best regards, Constantine 13:35, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just Some Quick Questions

edit

Just Some Quick Questions, wont take long. Do you think the 2009 bombings and military operations in Gaza qualifies as a "war"? Do you think any serious academics, scholars, historians or journalists in Europe considers the 2009 bombings and military operations inside Gaza consider it or think it qualifies as a "war"? In honesty? Does not wikipedia strive to avoid weasel wording in all its forms? Is the discrepancy here at all visible? to any of the admin here at wikipedia.. at all? Or is it complete hupty dumpy here? " I can make a word mean anything I want it to"--Humpty Dumpty, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (paraphrased) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.215.33.243 (talk) 00:41, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

A "war" is a war when two sides are shooting back at each other - which was the case during the conflict. I have know idea what the hell you are talking about otherwise, or what the hell does "Humpty Dumpty" has anything to do with this. Make more sense. Dinkytown (talk) 00:23, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Juvenile dishonesty has a place here? How old are you? Pick up a book if you dont understand the Lewis Carroll allusion. here , I'll save you some time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allusion
84.215.33.243 - Please do not do personal attacks on someone. If you have an issue with a subject, then bring your sources. Calling someone "Juvenile dishonesty..." and questioning my age is against several Wikipedia polcies. WP:PERSONAL, WP:CIV, and here [1]

Your definition of "war" is dishonest. For adults the Lewis Carroll Humpty Dumpty quote is as normal as an allusion to any of George Orwell's works and readily and regularly used throughout academia. I reiterate: you need to pick up more books before you criticise others for utilizing common literature and knowledge in public discourse or attempt yourself at subtle ridicule and then complain when the "fire" is returned. I hope and trust you comprehend all of this without further complaints. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.215.33.243 (talk) 03:32, 14 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

St. Paul Temperature Range

edit

Hey there. You reverted my edit regarding St Paul's temperature ranges. I don't think saying that St Paul has one of the greatest temperature ranges on Earth is appropriate. Its thermal amplitude is significant, but compared to places such as Yakutsk, Turpan, and the others I noted in my edit summary, St Paul is not particularly impressive in this regard. Maybe we can say that it experiences one of the greatest temperature swings of any major urban centre? That statement is much more accurate than the one I took out of the article. I'm certainly not going to make a big fuss over this, it's just that the statement in the article was/is an exaggeration. 1brettsnyder (talk) 07:00, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm a dummy. I didn't see your "of any major city" addition in there. My bad. 1brettsnyder (talk) 07:02, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
LOL, don't worry. You are right though. I knew that some place on Earth would have a more temperature extreme, but it might have a population of, say - 10.... This wasn't a lost cause though, I did not know that Yakutsk was such a large city nearly comparable with Saint Paul. Thanks for the learning experience... Tom Emmer

edit

Cool. As for what's left, who knows? This article is a mess.

-Digiphi (talk) 21:41, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
You have no basis for removal of BPA material. All information is relevant, factual, and from verifiable/reliable source (Official MN Government website). Presented in NPOV (It presents only the bill and his voting record.) And is in the appropriate section of the Tom Emmer article.
You have a lot to learn about Wikipedia. First, do not vandalize my talk page. You removed material that was already there from someone else - that is vandalism. Second, if you have read the Tom Emmer talk page under BPA, you would see the discussion on how this issue evolved. There was sound reasoning behind it. Third, I did have there right to change it. There was no context for his vote, and therefore, no position stated. There was no quote saying that his position was the he wanted to 'kill babies'. Maybe he disagreed with the wording of the bill. We will never know until he explains himself. Fourth, a primary source (and it was a good one) is not enough. Wikipedia is not a list of facts. It is a description of something. We are not going to go over every single vote that he has made and try to read the tea leaves about what he meant. You are trying to make him out as an S.S. officer - that is not NPOV. Read (this) the talk page, if you can find the relevant material, maybe we can discuss it and include it again. Finally, don't simply change computers to get around edit warring. Its called sock puppetry, and that's a good way to get banned. Dinkytown talk 14:57, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
(And now even the discussion of the Tom Emmer/BPA paragraph is being removed?) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.226.131.111 (talk) 15:28, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Take a look again - no one has touched the talk page... Dinkytown talk 15:41, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please see my apology and subsequent discussion on the talk page I am in a disagreement with Arzel, and I think a second opinion would be appropriate.
And again, I personally apologize for the statement above. My anger arose from an ignorance of how Wikipedia works. Not being aware of the Tom Emmer discussion page, I thought my edits were being discarded without a reasoned discussion.147.226.128.49 (talk) 15:11, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sami people

edit

Hi Dinkytown. I wonder if you could look at a couple of articles and see whether they ought to be renamed. They are Lapps in Finnish folklore and Lapps in Scandinavian folklore. Thanks, Gobonobo T C 05:48, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dinkytown

edit

I have never tried using this "talk" thing before and I realize this is probably incorrect since I am editing someone else's post (sorry). I just wanted to say yes we have met before - but I am not from Montreal. :) I will clean up some of the additions and add additional peer-reviewed citations when I get a chance. There are also some sections that might need a new separate page such as the "Sami people of note" section... as there are several people missing but this section is already long. I'd like to create a link to a new page sometime. Thanks, SA

Suggestions for next Minnesota meetup?

edit

Hi, Dinkytown, do you have any suggestions for a next date or place for a Minnesota meetup? I was disappointed to miss last Sunday's meetup once a work meeting coincided with the time announced for the meetup. I would be happy to arrange a meetup soon. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 14:03, 3 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

In regard to your revision of my text about the noun "Lapp" as it is mentioned in the "Sami people" article

edit

First, thank you for correcting some of my text. You wrote that mentioning "Lapp" in relation to other place names in Europe is vandalism, however it is not vandalism. It is a fact that these are old place names with “Lapp” found in different areas of Europe. You commented: ""Sorry, the Sami were never in Greece or Crete". The text I wrote do not state that the Sami had been to these places or that they had originated from there. The text is informational about the fact that “Lapp” is found in place names outside the Nordic areas. It is as relevant to explain the term "Lapp" in relation to where the name is found geographically (within the Sapmi, across the Nordic and in other places), as it is to explain the name of a people as being related to "a piece of clothing" or "patch" (as some have done in that article). Even if I disagree in the interpretation last mentioned I did not remove it. We do not know everything about the ancient history of Europe yet, so please let the text be as it is. (Thorguds (talk) 00:27, 8 November 2010 (UTC))Reply

Hi Thorguds - I never stated that the 'lapp' term was vandalism in anyway, only that it is grossly misinformed, and completely wrong. First, "lapp" in Germany, Greece, or even Australia has nothing to do with the Sami in Scandinavia. Yes, it is true that place names do reflect previous occupation of the Sami, but that was only within the past one or two thousand years, and should be/is limited only to the Nordic countries. There is no evidence that the Sami were ever in Greece, or Crete and to include that statement in the article assumes that there's truth to it. "Lapp" is a common last name in German Amish, but they have no connection with the Sami. "Goose" is a high derogatory word for a woman in Somali, but that shouldn't be put in there also. "Nova" means "No Go" in Spanish, but no one is going to put that as a serious issue in the Chevy Nova article. The same applies with this article - it dosen't belong there. We are not going to put a citation of any word in the world with the letter "l-a-p-p" in it. The place-name connection has been stated, and should be left alone. You stated the connection between place-names and occupation, that is correct and you did well there, but please limit this to the above. Dinkytown talk 00:53, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi Dinkytown. This discussion is about the etymology of the term "Lapp". Again, the text did not state that the Sami were in Greece or elsewhere, it states that old place names with "Lapp" are distributed widely in Europe. You and I cannot tell if the “Lapp” term in place names around Europe are related. Everything is not known yet about the ancient history or eventual cultural relations within Europe. As I see it is more incorrect to say that these place names are not relevant, because in this way it will be impossible to understand eventual connections. I do not agree that the text I wrote is irrelevant or that it is vandalism. In fact the text that interprets the etymology of the noun “Lapp” as patches and cloth are the one that have no meaning. I cannot even see that the person have added any sources for such a statement. However, I will not remove it, even if I disagree. Some people seem to believe in such nonsense. I understand what you mean with the German Amish and the Goose, but even so the place names mentioned by me in the article is interesting. As you can read in the text e.g. “The Isle of Arran” in Scotland is mentioned. “Arran” is a Sami word and several books (including ancient sources) of Pictish history write that "Finn galls" is the same as the Norse Vikings. There are many parallels between the Sami(Lapp= Fenni) and names & customs described in these old books. Even if the information is there, it is written down in old sources and mentioned in several old books, the information has for some reason been and still is ignored by historians. I cannot tell why historians ignore such information, however my intention is to inform about what old texts and other facts tell us about history. Nearly everything is controversial, deletion or ignorance is not the best way to deal with controversies. I suggest that you eventually can add relevant additional information in relation to my text, if you are worried about the text being confusing for readers.(Thorguds (talk) 01:37, 8 November 2010 (UTC))
I am moving this page to the Sami People page as that is were the discussion belongs. See you there... Dinkytown talk 02:21, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

National costume

edit

Im not sure why you sent me a warning message. I only made one revert in 24 hours and not three on the National costume article. That revert was to fix an act of vandalism by user:124.179.251.155.--MFIrelandTalk 00:03, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

You are engaging in an edit war with MFIreland, and vandalism as shown here. Please discuss this issue in the article's talk page and not edit war. Dinkytown talk 23:34, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I still haven't a clue what your on about. I never made three reverts in 24 hours on the National costume or Caubeen articles.--MFIrelandTalk 00:07, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

What is your problem? Can you not tell the time are something? I have NOT made three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period on the National costume, Caubeen or Kilt articles. If you dont stop sending me these false warnings I will have no choose but to contact an administrator.--MFIrelandTalk 00:18, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, but a recent edit that you made to User talk:MFIreland has been reverted or removed because it was a misuse of a warning or blocking template. Please use the user warnings sandbox for any tests you may want to do, or take a look at our introduction page to learn more about contributing to the encyclopedia. Thank you.

I have been asked by User:Dinkytown to view the recent activity on National costume (4 reverts in 3 days), Caubeen (3 reverts in 3 days), and Kilt (3 reverts in 3 days) where there is an apparent edit war going on between yourself and User:124.179.251.155. Although you have managed to avoid the 24h rule, it is still an edit war. Only on User talk:Dinkytown do you claim its vandalism - there is no such indication in the edit summary of your edits on those three pages, and no sign of any vandalism warning from you on the IP talk page. Hence User:Dinkytown was quite correct to call it an edit war, as a vandal fighter, he has no other way of determining who is correct. As it eventually happened the IP did fall foul of the 3RR rule and I have blocked them for 48 hours. Should he repeat vandalising articles I would politely ask that any reverts are clearly marked as vandalism, and also warned or reported to WP:AIV. Thank you for your attention.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 02:02, 30 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
