Critic Portfolios
editI noticed there was an option in the infoboxes to include portfolios would that be smart for Critic Positions in Shadow Cabinets?--Jack Cox 06:03, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
I am including Parliamentary secretary as an important job just like a cabinet minister but not like at the same level you know of the cabinet= I would guess, I think that Parliamentary Secretary is usually listed when you watch CPAC. But, I'm also looking to fix out of date or bad images of MP's.--Jack Cox 06:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Arrogance
editI've interacted with you a few times in the past, and you always struck me as reasonable and thorough. Unlike many users who are just looking to argue, you seem knowledgeable about Wikipedia policy and interested in what's best for the Wiki. So it hurt when you called me arrogant. I've been called much worse by other users, but it didn't mean as much, since I don't really care what they think.
Do you really think me unduly arrogant? Do you think my behavior is driving people away from Wikipedia? I'd really like to know. All the best, – Quadell (talk) (random) 22:48, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I felt your comments were indeed arrogant. This is because I don't think you see the full scope of what is happening. People leave Wikipedia for reasons. While they leave on their own free will, they are motivated by certain factors.
- Unfortunately, your actions have been driving people away from Wikipedia. This is why it is important that we come to a solution for the betterment of the project. Please, let's see where eachother is coming from so we can stop the exodus.
- Thanks, -- Earl Andrew - talk 23:03, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- What actions do you mean, specifically? Are you referring only to my saying that people leave of their own accord, or is it something else? – Quadell (talk) (random) 12:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- The whole way in which the culling fair use images have been implemented has been detrimental to the project. People are annoyed, and are leaving, and it is discouraging newer Wikipedians. Had this policy been active since Wikipedia's beginning, I wouldn't have had a problem with it, but because it has been implemented now, we are running into severe problems. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:31, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

CanElec templates
editIs there general agreement to include a +/- column? I removed these from my pages some time ago, thinking they had fallen into disuse. CJCurrie 04:07, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- I just found it too annoying to use, given the problems with redistributed ridings. There was just too much blank space. CJCurrie 04:26, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Can I ask what titles? I might have access to them at library, as well. CJCurrie 04:35, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I have a suggestion...maybe at the top of each province's subsection, we should provide a brief description of that province's criteria for city status. I've occasionally considered initiating a "City status in Canada" article, similar to the one that already exists for City status in the United Kingdom, but I think it would probably be better to just give brief summaries within the list itself. Any chance I could talk you into helping out with that, since I don't know all the relevant statistics? Bearcat 02:54, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Canadian ridings infobox
editThere definitely needs to be a municipal-subdivision addition to the infobox template, but I don't think I understand the "if" parameters, either. Maybe just listing it as "Municipalities/Neighbourhoods" for now? FUNgus guy 22:21, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Image:Bonfohabbas.jpg
editThanks for uploading Image:Bonfohabbas.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok ☠ 02:05, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

- Yes, well that would be mainly the same. I know curling works with teams and one team can miss out on a tournament one year and be back the year after, but they're still national teams. However, I'm planning to create these pages for the Dutch national team and in these articles there is the possibility to name the variation in the teams representing the country year by year. I seem to recall you were in the Wiki Elections project last time around and noted your name in the history on the 1952 election; I just posted a response to someone's copyvio ticket and was hoping for backup/corroboration, or at least somebody who could work the fact template so as to put in quotation marks and cite the explanation of the elimination ballot as gleaned from the Elections BC webpages (which are not, to my knowledge, copyrighted). Untagged image
editAn image you uploaded, Image:Winnipegcoa.gif, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 02:02, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Unspecified source for Image:Gvrdflag.PNG
editThanks for uploading Image:Gvrdflag.PNG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Denelson83 11:42, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Hockeyczechrepublic.PNG)
editThanks for uploading Image:Hockeyczechrepublic.PNG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Problem with Image:Wikimeetup.PNG
editEarl, you may want to revise the license for Image:Wikimeetup.PNG. Unfortunatelly, you can't release it to the public domains, as it contains the Wikipedia logo, which is copyrighted to the Wikimedia Foundation. And if you're not the author of the other image used in the composition, you should check it's licensing conditions to make sure both images can really be combined (if the other image is cc-by, for instance, I believe we can't combine it with the logo). List of mayors
editHi, It seems that you are systematically removing external links for internal links even if they don't exist. Is there a Wikipedia rule that I missed? ClaudeSB 19:59, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Not sure, but I'd prefer them to be redlinks so that articles on them can be created. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:01, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- This would mean that since there is some information on some external link, people should create stubs with the external link or is there another way?
ClaudeSB 20:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the rapid reply. As I have time, i will go thru the list and crate stubs with external links as you suggest. This brings my next question: There are now 3 pages dealing with "Michel Tremblay", the playwright, the past Rimouski Mayor and the current Varennes Mayor. How about creating a disambiguation page?
- ClaudeSB 20:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, I'm not sure how famous the playright is, but if he is far and above more famous than the others, then the dab page will go at Michel Tremblay (disambiguation). I don't know if you'd like to do this, or if you're asking me to do so. -- Earl Andrew - talk 22:42, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
- Michel Tremblay is quite famous in Quebec. His plays are in fact in the highschool curiculum if I am not mistaken. I was just asking if it was OK and since it seems it is, I will do it.
Children of the Prime Ministers of Canada
editHi Earl Andrew,
Not sure if you noticed but Children of the Prime Ministers of Canada is up for deletion. I think your list is worthy of being in Wikipedia. Alas, it looks like it will be deleted. Sigh, sometimes I wonder why I bother contributing here when good articles like this one will be deleted but all the articles in Category:Lists of fictional characters by series are worthy. --YUL89YYZ 22:38, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry I just noticed that you voted. This AfD is bugging me. --YUL89YYZ 22:46, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- I created the List of Children of the Presidents of the United States and now the delete club is trying to get rid of it as they are trying to get rid of the one you created. They aren't singling out Canadian lists, they hate President lists too. I try to merge them when they get deleted. You may want to save your info just in case it gets deleted. Right now the Canadian list of children is looking safer than the U.S. one which is tied. I voted to keep both (obviously). Jjmillerhistorian 14:15, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've weighed in with a vote - also put a keep item in the AfD for List of Children of the Presidents of the United States. Let's hope this helps keep the articles.
- Meanwhile, thanks for your work on the recent Ottawa WikiMeet, although it looks like a challenge to get the crowds out. Not much work lately on chasing birth/name info due to current priorities, although I did get into some dob resolution on the Diane Tell article recently. Dl2000 03:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Townships in Ontario - defunct or otherwise
editHi. I've noticed that you've changed the name of some articles I've written about defunct Ontario townships from Placename to Placename Township. No problem, I'll name any new articles I create accordingly. However, I am a little confused about naming conventions. There has been no substantive comment there for over a month and User:Abu badali has never bothered to respond to the RfC. The last comment on the talk page of the RfC was a suggestion to take it to arbitration, which is what I propose we do. Accordingly, I have created a shell/draft listing to add to the list of Arbitration Committee matters here. I've listed your new there, preliminarily, as a complaintant. If you are not interested in participating, please remove your name. If you are, please add your comments as we must prepare a 500 word summary of the case. Replaceable fair use images I tagged a while ago
editEarl Andrew, you may remember a while ago when I gave you notice that I tagged a few replaceable images you uploaded for speedy deletion. I was thinking and, it may not mean anything to you, but I'm sorry I did that. I probably should not have tagged them for speedy deletion since you uploaded in 2005. I don't mean to say that I think the images should have continued being used, but I think I should have notified you of a formal IFD. Because IFD is a centralized page, people would have been able to easily comment on whether or not they thought the images should be deleted. I am now beginning to think that, because of the opportunity for centralized discussion, this process is more appropriate to consider older images. I hope you will accept my apology. --Iamunknown 01:15, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Your maps
editOnce again, I'd like to compliment you on your election-result maps. They look great.
The last thing I want to do is discourage you. However, I do recommend that in the future you consider cutting down on the number of colours. I would recommend that you use no more than two colours for each party. Another idea, if you're really set on using four colours for each party, might be to use shades of red, blue and yellow rather than mess with teal or anything like that.
You might want to look at the map in today's National Post of the election results. It's very simple, using black, grey and white for the three parties. But the message is very clear as soon as you look at it. Your maps are far more attractive but take some staring at to gather what they're trying to say. There's a give-and-take between clarity and the amount of information provided. Considering the great amount of detail available in the text, it might be worthwhile to move a bit toward the side of simplicity.
But it's your call -- you're the one whose put forth the effort to make the maps, so you get to decide how they look. -- Mwalcoff 23:38, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Well, it's up to you; newspapers would generally favour clarity over faithfulness to party colours, but you're not working for a newspaper. -- Mwalcoff 01:59, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Pat Ryan
editI think you are confusing more developed article with more notable person. I think the dab should be on the unambiguated page. I think your decision to revert my page move was an emotional one. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 22:55, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I just put Pat Ryan in google and the executive came first. In fact, aside from the contested wikipedia address, the curler is not on the first page of the google search. He is a world champion in a minor sport the executive founded a fortune 500 company as well as serves as Chairman of the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid committee. I think you should move your page back to the curler page and restore the dab where I had it. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 15:32, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- The point is that proper protocol when neither dominates the other is to have the unambiguated page hold the dab like I had set it. Your guy is not so popular in comparison to the executive as to warrant him being viewed as the primary Pat Ryan. Please move him back to the curler location. Sens in the Finals
editOh yeah good luck with your Sens in the finals, it should be a good series. I really have absolutely no idea who I'd rather cheer for, both teams have many reasons why I want them to win, haha. I'll just probably watch and start cheering for whoever is behind in the series, cuz I'm used to rooting for a loser, har har har. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 16:53, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
- Whoa whoa whoa, I am NOT backing down on the Sundin-Alfredsson comparison, although Sundin is getting older and Alfredsson happens to be in his prime... I have a hated respect for Alfredsson, I loved his fake-throwing the stick jab at Sundin from a while back, but I hated his goldie-locks hair and his cheap shot on Tucker way back when in one of those playoff series that the Leafs won. If I cheer for the Sens, its not cause they are the Sens, it'd be for one of a few reasons A) 14 years without the Cup in Canada is way too long, the Americans don't deserve the Cup, B) The sens have a lot of likeable players (almost everybody excluding Alfredsson), or C) This whole "Win it for Elgin" sentiment has a lot of emotion behind it.... however they are just as many, if not more reasons to cheer for the Ducks, so I'm really split. And no problem on the whole Finals article thing, I think a problem that has sprung up in the Project over the last few weeks is that it has suddenly become way too authoritative. Cheers, less than 48 hours til Game #1. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 05:09, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- Har har har, I'm glad I could be of service... even though I did start cheering for the Ducks, in all honesty I wanted Alfredsson to win the Conn Smythe... 14 goals is spectacular and almost single-handedly kept his team in the game for at least a couple of periods.... Ah shucks, that means Sens fans can't wipe their Cup rings in us Leaf fans' faces, whatashame. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 16:44, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello Earl, I've fixed your recent edits to these articles. Though Ghiz's Liberals have defeated Binns' PCs, Ghiz won't be assuming the Premiership for about another 2-weeks. - Now, a registered user is claiming Tignish-DeBlois & Tignish-Palmer Road are the exact same. Is this happening on the other districts? Their (the agruing editors) method would call for, MLAs being listed from 1st Prince (1968-96) and the MLAs before that. This (the fighting) is getting tiresome. GoodDay 21:43, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- The borders are similar. A merge is best, I think there's going to be more editors (in future) who'll argue for (example: Tignish-Palmer Road = Tignish-DeBlois) it. Plus, a few sq kms' changes, isn't worth the hassle. GoodDay 22:12, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

editPlease see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jenn Hanna. YechielMan 04:09, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- I've withdrawn the AfD but I do have concerns about some of your edits to curling articles, essentially there is a lot of unsourced / unverified and unencyclopedic information in most if not all of the articles I've seen. I also wonder if you have a conflict of interest with some of the people and organisations you have written about? Deiz talk 04:28, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- I notice you reverted the unsourced and apparently non-notable information about club happenings and redlinked people without comment. Could you explain why any of this is notable, and your connection with the OCC? Deiz talk 06:56, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, but no. The various leagues, cash league standings, past champions, past presidents and redlinked members all strike me as a long way short of encyclopedic, not to mention being unsourced. Presumably this is all on the club website which can be accessed via the external link. Given the statement on your userpage that you are a member of the club, there appears to be a clear conflict of interest here. Deiz talk 07:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

We all write about what we're interested in, but COI is there for a good reason. Given the conflict and lack of sources, let's go back to the streamlined version and you can add information as and when you find reliable sources to verify it as encyclopedic. Deiz talk 08:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- I also have questions about the appropriateness of some of the information in the Ottawa Curling Club article. If you could join us at the talk page to discuss, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Satori Son 14:38, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed, and also about general issues of sourcing and appropriateness of style for curling material you've added. At WP:COI/N I mentioned the example of Jenn Hanna.
- In the final, Hanna's team played well, and led for most of the game, and were looking like they were going to win it. In the tenth end, Hanna's team was up by two but did not have the hammer. Hanna's team had a rock on the button that was already well guarded, and decided to throw another guard rather than take away Jones' only chance at scoring, an in-off. Jones managed to make the extremely difficult shot, coming in-off of a Ontario stone just in front of the house, to take out Hanna's shot rock to score four and win the Scott".
- This'd be fine for a radio sports report, but here it's unencylopedic style and, even rephrased, would need sourcing. Gordonofcartoon 17:20, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Moshe Lewis
editHi Earl: I noticed on the David Lewis (politician) page you credit his father's Anglicized name as "Morris". If it were Anglicized it would be "Moses", not "Morris" as stated in Pierre G. Normandin's book. I'd like to delete the Anglicization of his name in that article.--Abebenjoe 04:29, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well, unfortnately, even if it appears in a book, it can be wrong. In the comprehensive biography of the Lewis family, Unfinished Journey, Moshe was never referred to as Morris. I think Mr. Normandin made a mistake. As well, being Jewish myself, I know that his name would most likely not be Anglicized to Morris, if it ever was Anglicized. Even Moshe is an Anglicization, because his name in Yiddish was actually pronounced more like "Maishe" (the spelling that Cameron Smith would use throughout the book). Don't take this personally Earl, but Morris is obviously wrong, but I like that you've added another reference to the article though.--Abebenjoe 04:43, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- Cheers.--Abebenjoe 04:58, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
Russell Cunningham
editHi Earl:
Why move Russell Cunningham (Canadian politician), the first Nova Scotia CCF leader of the Official Opposition, from Nova Scotia politician to Canadian policitican? He wasn't much of a player on the national scene, unlike his predicessor, Donald MacDonald (Nova Scotia). I'm going to revert your change on Donald, because that form was agreed upon by me and the other person who wrote it. But I still want to know your rationale for changing Cunningham before I think about reverting your change.--Abebenjoe 19:00, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, well I'll have to move poor Donald MacDonald again, for the upteenth time. Oh well, we'll get his naming covention correct at some point (you really don't know how frustrating it is have two guys with basically the exact name, being involved in the same party at about the same time. Even in biographies, biographers and historians mix up Donald from NS and Donald from ON all the time, ascribing things done to the other and vice versa. Really makes it complicated to present good information here and in other places. Donald ON is still around, but really doesn't want another person contiuously interviewing him... he'd rather go canvass for an NDP candidate, even at age 93!--Abebenjoe 20:09, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- P.S., me and the other writer of the Donald MacDonald article came up with just Nova Scotia, because I was coming from the political side and he was writing about the labour side MacDonald's career. We came to the mutual agreement that Nova Scotia was more neutral than my suggestion of Nova Scotia politician. Since he was both a politician, and the highest ranking labour leader in the country, what other neutral names can you come up with, i.e. can we just use place of origin instead of type of job?--Abebenjoe 20:13, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for keeping a 'watch' on those editors, who keep adding the wrong name in the 'birth place' part of Current Roster sections. Particularly editors like me (Holy smokes, I'm so embarrassed). Anyway, you're correct it was Newfoundland before 2001. GoodDay 20:45, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada
editThe article that you protected is not official. It was put together by one single network and is not deemed official, hence that is the reason why I thought it should be CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada and not, simply the Seven Wonders of Canada. I wouldn't mind if the vote was called the Seven Wonders of Canada, but I truly would like to see it separated fairly. That is all I would like for this article and I would leave it alone as soon as it is changed, I would simply like it to be an accurate article. Thanks. - kevinbocking
This is not a plausible argument. The program would obviously not be "CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada", as it would not make sense. The list is only the CBC's list and should be noted somewhere in the title. This is not a government, nor a national list, it is simply a television program that they made to get more viewers. In terms of the "made up titles" you are speaking of, unless CBC owns this website (which I highly doubt) then it would not be a made up title. I agree with you though that you should call programs by their names as shown on the particular network or show, except that this particular article is not ABOUT a show, it is only showing the list that was produced meagerly by the three judges. - kevinbocking
Really? If you don't mind, can you tell me where the "policy" says that a list from a show (not THE show) shouldn't indicate where it is from, and that it isn't an official thing. I would understand if it is a specifically government list, but unfortunately it seems to not be. Please help me understand your "point". - kevinbocking
Yeah so I guess this is why Wikipedia isn't as good as it should be because of self-righteous people like Scorpion and yourself. -kevinbocking
It is not made up, it is not the name of the program, because that is not what the article is about, if you want to make it specifically about the show, then be my guest. The article is about the list, it should be named CBC's Seven Wonders of Canada instead of Seven Wonders of Canada, since it is not official.

editI notice that you've been removing all of the notifications I've left (can't possibly think of why.....) when I've been tagging and bagging images. Fair assumption that you don't care one way or another and would rather me just leave you alone? Trust me, I'm not here to try and drive you insane. :-D --fuzzy510 03:41, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry about that. I get annyoed by image notices. I mean, I would care, but I get so many that I can't really be bothered. You seem to be a sports fan, why go through all this work instead of just giving the images fair use rationale? -- Earl Andrew - talk 03:45, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not tagging them for not having rationale - trust me, I wouldn't do that, since that'd incredibly counterproductive. I'm replacing them with PNG versions, which leaves them orphaned. When I did this with college logos, about 98% of them were changed out without anybody caring, but it's the 2% that raised legitimate concerns that I wouldn't have thought of. I'd just skip it, but it's going to be that one time that I don't do it that I really step on someone's toes. --fuzzy510 03:58, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for creating the above-named page. I assume that since you created the skeleton, you have thoughts as to how it should be filled out. I've filled out the St. Albert portion of it, but I'm certainly not married to the format I've used or the information that I've included; if you have other ideas about what the page should look like, let's figure it out now so it has some internal consistency (I'd also like to handle the Sturgeon County and Edmonton portions).
Speaking of the Edmonton portion, how do you think it should be handled, given that I've already created a separate article for the Edmonton election? I have no fundamental objection to merging the Edmonton municipal election, 2007 article into the provincial master article; the one problem that I see with doing so is that every other Edmonton municipal election, including those that took place before provincial legislation unified all Alberta municipal election, has its own article, and it seems like it would be a little odd not to give 2007 its own as well (to say nothing of messing with the template).
I have no strong opinions on any of this, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Sarcasticidealist 16:15, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Image reverts
editHello. I've reverted your edit to Image:2001brier.gif. Instead of revert warring with Beta and his bot, why not just add a rationale? —« ANIMUM » 05:47, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

All Brier logos are deleted, because you have not given any sort of rationale for their usage on any article you had put them on. On top of that, editwarring on these is harmful.—Ryūlóng (竜龍) 05:50, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Fair use disputed for Image:Nokiabrier2001.gif
editThanks for uploading Image:Nokiabrier2001.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Ryūlóng (竜龍) 07:26, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
editThanks for uploading Image:Nokiabrier2001.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use.
If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 08:14, 20 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Ryūlóng (竜龍) 08:14, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

About Highway 6 Map
editHi Earl Andrew,
I've seen you uploading a new map for Highway 6. What a nice map it is. I am just wondering... Could you sent me this map (without the mapped Highway 6), I just want the original map... to my e-mail. How about it?
Also, I have seen you have done some work reviewing Highway 6, I wish you can give me more feedbacks, as I want to promote it to Good Article.

Little context in Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot by-election, 2007
editHello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot by-election, 2007, by SLSB (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot by-election, 2007 is very short providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Saint-Hyacinthe—Bagot by-election, 2007, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 18:37, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Notability of Michael Oddy
editA tag has been placed on Michael Oddy, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. GreenJoe 20:06, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Defunct Ontario ridings
editI noticed that you wrote many of the articles listed at Category:Defunct Ontario provincial electoral districts. I was wondering, where was your source for this information? I ask because I'd like to write an article on Durham Centre and the electoral districts that preceeded it. Morgan695 21:26, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, could you please send maps of Durham Centre, Durham East, Durham West and Durham--York? My email is morgan.es.alan@gmail.com. Thank you! Morgan695 18:42, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks! I don't mean to press, but do you happen to know of a source for a chronology of ridings (specifically, which riding preceeded Durham Centre?) I used the Legislative Assembly of Ontario webpage and my best guess would be that it was once a part of Durham East or Durham West, but I'd like to be sure. Morgan695 20:13, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
John Kent, Newfoundland premier
editI wish you hadn't moved John Kent (Newfoundland politician) to John Kent (politician). There are other politicians of that name, which is why I put the Newfoundland in the article title as I build the dab page. (Considering it was moved a few minutes before your move, it might have been good to ask discuss any further moves). Could we agree to move it back? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:59, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, this would indicate otherwise: John_Kent_(disambiguation). If there are other John Kent's, they should be added there. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:00, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- If you check the edit history, you'll find that I have only just created John Kent (disambiguation), to group together the articles on John Kent before naming the new ones which I am about to create. Please could you not wait even a few hours before moving an article so that all its incoming links are ambiguous redirects? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs)
- Sorry, I don't normally check the edit histories under those circumstances. Please accept my apologies. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:08, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I have moved it back. But it really would be a good idea to do more checking before moving article. You have been doing a lot of page moves recently. I just looked at a few, and I find that you don't appear to have updated any of the disambiguation pages or any double redirects. have you checked whether the targets for those moves were already redlinks, and whether the result would be an appropriate link ? Wouldn't it be better to do that work as you go, rather than leaving it to be sorted out later? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:17, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

- Don't we have bots to do all that? :) -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:20, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- There are limits to what the bots can do, and any that work on this stuff must be heavily overloaded, because I encounter so many dab pages where the the dablink points to a redirect, and has done so for a long time. AFAIK, the bots merely report' double redirects rather than fixing them. That's why it says on the move page "You are responsible for making sure that links continue to point where they are supposed to go.". --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:25, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

I've taken the liberty to bypass all the redirects. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:30, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Are you sure? A random check suggests not quite all [5]. And what about the dab pages?
- Also, was it really a good idea to to move John Holloway (governor) to John Holloway (politician)? He was an admiral and a colonial governor, but it's stretching things to call him a politician. I'm really not sure what the benefit is of all these moves. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:40, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- One shouldn't use someone's title as a disambiguation unless absolutely necessary. We normally use their profession instead. It's the common standard on Wikipedia, from what I've seen. -- Earl Andrew - talk 20:58, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed, but Holloway was not a politician. Nor were several of the other governors, who I have also moved back again. Governor is a frequent exception to the rule, because many colonial governors were military, naval, diplomatic or business people, not politicians (AFAICS it was only in the early 20th century that British politicians got sent off to the colonies as governors), and "John Smith (governor)" is much snappier than "John Smith (colonial administrator)". --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:06, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- We don't disambiguate on Wikipedia based on how "snappy" the disambiguation title is. -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:10, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- A disambiguator isn't an essay, so some degree of brevity is needed; "snappiness" is not the only consideration in choosing a disambiguator, but it is one important consideration. Either way, calling people politicians when they were not politicians is no-no. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:37, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kylie-fever.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Kylie-fever.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 01:32, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Flag templates for Canadian provinces and territories
editPlease do not bypass the standard flag template system for these 13 flags. There is nothing special about this set of 13 relative to the other ~1000 available flag templates that they need to be differently sized, and lacking a border. Inconsistency is a big problem when these templates are used on the same page with other flag templates. If you have specific pages in which you would like to see 30px versions, then the preferred method is to use the size= parameter with the standard Template:flag, on those specific pages. But please don't change the default size for this small subset of flags (only) so that all transclusions are affected. Thanks, Andrwsc 20:54, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, I created these flag templates. Please do not change them. If you want there to be standard sized templates, please create your own. I created these for use in curling articles, so the flags would be large enough to distinguish the difference between Manitoba and Ontario. -- Earl Andrew - talk 00:05, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Uh, please read WP:OWN. Although you may created these templates only for use on a relatively small number of curling articles, they have been "usurped" by many other editors for many other articles. For example, Template:AB is transcluded on over 500 articles, many of which rely on standard flag icon formatting. Look at Highwood, Calgary, where the flags for Canada, Alberta, and Calgary are all intended to line up together. Other instances I've come across are Little League World Series articles, where Canadian province flags, US state flags, and international country flags are all used and therefore all need to be similarly sized. You even reverted a change of mine at 2001 Jeux de la Francophonie where the Quebec and New Brunswick flags were misaligned with the nation flags. I ask you - is it easier to edit a handful of curling articles to use the flag size you prefer, or to cause thousands of other pages to have formatting alignment problems? Andrwsc 00:18, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- One further comment: it's trivial to make the changes to the curling articles, and I've started with a handful already, so if you are concerned about the work involved, I'm willing to do it. Just let me know. Andrwsc 00:21, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps their usuption was intended to have them as larger flags as well? Anyways, if you do insist on changing all of the templates, please do not forget the historical templates too. -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:04, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Maybe, but my guess is not, because I would have expected to see the use of {{CAN2}} (30px) as well, but {{CAN}} (22px + border) was used on those pages.
- Now, I have a followup question about the "historical templates". Should they really be used? The discussion on Talk:Flag of Alberta indicates that the flag used in {{AB2}} was in fact never really used. The original author's comments on the Commons page for Image:Hypotheical flag of Alberta.svg even express the speculative nature of this design: Possible flag of en:Alberta from 1907. Created from the SVG images of the Alberta flag and of the British Blue Ensign. As there does not seem to be any verifiable references for these flags, should we still use them? Thanks, Andrwsc 18:38, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reference. That seems to be as good as any! Andrwsc 18:48, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

New Democratic Party candidates, 2007 Ontario provincial election
editArticles like New Democratic Party candidates, 2007 Ontario provincial election are never fun to write, given the sheer ammount of information being put into them, but you should follow the standard set at the other candidate articles (see the Liberal candiate list), by which I mean:
- List sorted alphabetically, by candidate's last name
- Only putting non-incumbents on the page
- Not giving non-incumants their own article, unless they have done something notable before the election or are elected
I know re-sorting the entire list would not be enjoyable (seeing as the NDP have 97 non-incumbents - I wonder if there is a bot that could do it more easily?), but you seem to be quite interested in NDP-related articles and I'd figure that I'd alert you to the standard. Morgan695 19:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- I stand corrected. Regardless, I've removed the current MPPs because they all have their own pages - there's no real need to have them there - and I am in the process of removing all non-incumbants who have their own article. Morgan695 23:10, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- My thought was that a list of 107 is incredibly overwhelming and difficult to navigate; we should look for opportunities to cut it down where we can. Even with incumbents and notables removed, it's still a large list at 88. Morgan695 02:18, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
Just so you know, the plain title Sudbury is a dab page, not an article about the Ontario city. The one in Ontario can be linked to at either Sudbury, Ontario or Greater Sudbury, but not just "Sudbury". Bearcat 01:08, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Calliopejen1 12:40, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Yorkregionseal.PNG
editThanks for uploading Image:Yorkregionseal.PNG.
Thank you. Lara❤Love 14:43, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Teflon Disambiguation Reverted
editHello. I noticed that you reverted an edit that I made to Curling wherein I replaced a link to the Teflon disambiguation page to the actual page to which the link referred, Polytetrafluoroethylene. This disambiguation was valid, as the reference in Curling is unambiguously to polytetrafluroethylene. The edit was was performed by me as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation. Why did you revert it? Merenta 18:21, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Which is which?
Island’s Name | Island group(s) | Country/Countries |
---|---|---|
Pine | Georgian Bay Ontario | Canada |
Pine | Windy Lake Ontario | Canada |
Pine | Lake Huron, Ontario | Canada |
Someone please sort this out, see also Talk:Pine Island & Talk:List of islands by name (P), Peter Horn 22:39, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Can anyone tell me where this lake or sound is? I assume it is not Severn Lake which I found in northeren Ontario. Peter Horn 02:32, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Really in Ontario? Do you mean Whitefish River? Peter Horn 01:36, 2 November 2007 (UTC) Peter Horn 22:48, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanke for that website, but the plot thickens. I found about 18 Whitefish Lakes in Ontario alone! Now I had to figure out in which of these is Deans Island & that was OK, but List of islands of Ontario#Windy Lake is a real problem. Peter Horn 21:12, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, there are 8 Windy Lakes in Ontario. In which one of these 8 Windy lakes in Ontario are the following two islands??

Saskatchewan election
editRe: Image:Sask07.PNG, could you recolour Meadow Lake as an SP win instead of an NDP when you get a chance? There is a potential recount pending, but until that happens we need to report the actual winners as declared by Elections Saskatchewan, and Jeremy Harrison is currently the declared winner. Thanks. Bearcat 17:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah. Sonntag was declared on election night, but the returning officer reported a tabulation error the following morning which flipped it to Harrison. (Shades of 2004, no?) Absentee ballots aren't being counted until the 19th, though, so save yourself a potential future hassle by hanging onto the NDP version of the map just in case. Bearcat 18:03, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
