Old Friends ... New Friends article

edit

Hello! It's been a while since we worked on the Old Friends ... New Friends article, but it's finally published. I'll keep working on the article. I'm sorry about the delay; I've been working on my procrastination recently, so hopefully this kind of delay won't happen again. Thanks again for all of your help, I really appreciate it. FunnyMath (talk) 01:28, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@FunnyMath, not a problem; we're all volunteers, so we do what we can when we're able. For example, if you had asked me earlier, I might not have been able to assist, since I've been busy IRL and working on other WP articles and projects. I'm able to help out now, though, so let me know what I can do. I had the draft on my watchlist, so I'll go and look at what you've done and put the article on my watchlist to keep an eye out for it. Congrats on the publish! ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 15:49, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

gather together in my name

edit

hello, Christine! i just wanted to let you know that, since this article was promoted to featured article status, the article has become inconsistent with its capitalization of "black". the tfa blurb currently has it uncapitalized, presumably because that instance in the article lead is uncapitalized. if you decide to restore the style that was used at the time of the article's promotion, i think it would be appropriate to change the blurb to reflect that. note that mos:racecaps, which was added in recent years, suggests that "black" and "white" should either be both capitalized or both uncapitalized, so if "black" ends up being capitalized in the blurb, i assume that "white" should be too.

by the way, i replaced "feel" in the blurb with "felt" because the other verbs discussing the book's critical reception ("received", "acclaimed", and "recognized") all used past tense. however, i then struggled with whether "makes" should be similarly conjugated, i.e., whether the blurb should read "felt makes" or "felt made". i ended up leaving "makes" alone, but please feel free to replace it with "made" if you think it is more appropriate, or revert to the earlier use of "feel" if you disagree with my replacement. dying (talk) 09:40, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Dying: thanks for the note. As the main editor of this and most other Angelou articles, I set the precendent that the word "Black" in these articles would be capitalized, as explained here. I did a quick check and found that there was only one error, so I fixed it. Re: the tenses: according to MOS:BLPTENSE, we can use the present tense for statements made by reviewers and in academic writing, and we use the past tense for news and marketing materials. When I was informed that this article was going to be on the main page, I checked to make sure the plural uses were consistent, so no please don't change anything more. Thanks for your interest in this article; I'm very proud that it's going to be TFA on Juneteenth. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:47, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
oh, interesting! admittedly, i had not considered mos:blptense since i didn't think the article was a blp (although the book itself may be a bdp); i had been relying on mos:tense, which states to "write articles in the present tense", and to "use past tense only for past events". i had assumed the use of "received", "acclaimed", and "recognized" indicated that the book's critical reception was considered to be in the past, and only tried to make the blurb more consistent by changing "feel" to "felt". i am not as familiar with mos:blptense, so if you think that it is overriding in this case, please feel free to change "felt" back to "feel". thanks, Christine! dying (talk) 20:24, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Dying, not a problem. Well no this article isn't a BLP, but it does contain biographical info since it's an autobiography. You'll notice that for those sections, I used the past tense. For literary discussions of the book, I used BLPTENSE. That's also what my main professor in grad school taught me. It gets really confusing when you have to mix tenses (i.e., "Critic Hilton Als believes that the title of Gather Together may relect its theme of how one Black woman was able to survive in the wider context of post-war America while also speaking for all Black women, and how they survived in a white-dominated society."). I think that I was successful in getting it right here. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:15, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Images on skater pages

"And no you can't just add images; all images on WP need to be free before you can upload them to WP and to Commons." - from a recent response to me. What can be considered "free"? Just as an example, on Yuna Kim's page, there are photos from [[1]] korea(dot)net and [[2]] Mike Pence's twitter. Can newspaper photos be considered free? User:Editor120918756, see Wikipedia:Image use policy for explanation about WP's image use policy. Both the images you mention are in the public domain because they're both government-owned images. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:31, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Editor120918756, yes that's correct. I would suggest that you upload them to Commons, though, and make sure the documentation at the original site states that the image is in the public domain. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 16:30, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Axel & Petrosian

edit

Sory if my english terrible. Points for discussion talk page: 1) About the rooles. I the only roole: to make material consistent. What allowed to one person the same is allowed to another, it mean neutlality. If Axel jump Axel and wee cheer him up as the 1-st, there is a precedent to apply it to Petrosian's case. Both them cannot go to the ISU competitions. If Axel's photo is welocome at the history, Petrosian is in the same situation. 2) If to discuss quads. ISU-controlled events do not show woman quads for a year or more, am I correct? As of Russia, I have seen lots of them during the same time. If so, majority of woman-FS-strongest girls is beyond the ISU, in Russia. Minority should not dictate rools to the majotity and to the strongest. It is not ZOO of flags. It does not matter how many flags there are in the ISU - there are no sports activity, no results in case of woman-single FS. PavelSI (talk) 19:38, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Impact of Yuna Kim and Media image and impact of Yuna Kim

edit

Hello! I found those two articles while working on Wikidata for figure skating articles without Wikidata entries/without statements in their Wikidata entries. And right now I don't really understand why those shouldn't be merged into only one article? --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 00:20, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Harmonia Amanda, hello to you. These two articles are new and were created in order to shorten the length of the main bio, Yuna Kim. To be honest, it never occurred to any of us in the Figure Skating WikiProject to combine the two new ones, probably because they're very different articles. Impact of Yuna Kim is about Kim's general influence of figure skating and sports, while Media image and impact of Yuna Kim is about her other careers, both before and after her retirement from skating. I suppose they could be combined, but I'd personally be against it. I'll bring up your suggestion at the talk page of the project, though, and see what others think. Thanks, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:09, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your answer! The clarification there was not apparent to me while reading quickly the articles. Maybe they can be merged into one with sections "in sports" and "others", or maybe the titles could be made clearer? (maybe by renaming one to "impact on *figure skating*"?). Frankly I came here via Wikidata, as stated in my first message, trying to understand the scope and aims of each articles to add basic data points.
I can usually rely on categories, at least, but here both just said "Figure skating in South Korea" (while you are saying that one of them is not really centred around figure skating?). Maybe something like Category:Cultural impact by person would be appropriate? I don't want to make any changes to the articles without understanding what the scopes of both are supposed to be.
A search on this Wikipedia about "impact of [someone]" basically shows me no results at all (some redirects, but no specific article). There are some about "cultural impact of [someone]" but they are quite different. So I can't rely on other pages to deduce what the usual scope of such articles would be, since they appear to be fairly isolated in their structuring.
English is not my native language, even though I'm decent in it, and I don't really contribute to the English Wikipedia. I am very aware that even though I contribute on figure skating elsewhere, I do not know the work you do here, and I don't want to break things. If you think a merge is a bad idea, then I trust you. My main goal is really just to understand what each article is about, to be able to do the Wikidata items properly so it can be linked in the general database, and found, and used, by people not speaking English.
This can probably be achieved by means other than merging, clarifying the first sentences of both articles to explain the scope, having both articles clearly link to each other (maybe a top link with something like "this article is about Yuna's impact of figure skating, for her impact on other things see this article"), and having more categories.
By the way, since there are now three articles (at least) about her, maybe one solution would be to create a category for her on the English Wikipedia? I don't know the criteria for categories in your WP.
I don't want to make these changes myself as an outsider, particularly one who still don't exactly understand the scope the enwp:Figure skating project assigned these two articles. I just want to integrate properly these two articles in the bigger Wikimedia world :) --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 20:31, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Harmonia Amanda, I've followed the standards set at other figure skating bios; for example Yuzuru_Hanyu#Accolades_and_impact. I don't disagree with you regarding your suggestions for categories, so I'll bring it up for discussion at WikiProject Figure Skating. I do agree that a new category should be formed for Kim, now that she has three articles about her. I will do that shortly, too. At any rate, thanks for your suggestions. I'm curious, where do you write about figure skating? In another part of Wikipedia? Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:00, 18 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

edit

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to   Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Conflict of interest 😢

edit

I saw you undid my edits on Yuna Kim with concerns that I may have a conflict of interest. I think I reviewed one of your DYKs in the past, 😢. Is the COI suspicion based on an assumption that I'm linked to one/more of these newspapers?

See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Korea#AWB reference edits. I wrote a custom WP:Autowikibrowser script to format Korea-related references in general. I was actually inspired to create this script because while nominating DYKs I've had several cases where people didn't recognize major South Korean newspapers, so I'm automatically linking them everywhere so people have a chance to understand what is what.

The script links more than just newspapers; it links publishers from both the South Korean and North Korean government so people can scrutinize what is coming from what. I'm not tied to any of these organizations... Just a well-meaning nerd. toobigtokale (talk) 03:30, 3 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Toobigtokale: I probably mislabeled this in the edit summary; perhaps a better one would be overlinking, because you link every instance of the newspapers. Perhaps linking them just once would be enough? Or if it's already linked in the article? Remember, we only have to link once. My apologies for the mislabeling.
I get what you say about DYK reviewers not recognizing the So. Korean media sources. They just assume that since they've never heard of The Korea Times, it must not exist. It demonstrates the bias on WP against non-Western and obscure topics, and since I focus on those types of articles, too, I run into the same kind of thing a lot, too. I sympathesize, really I do, but I'm not sure that overlinking is the solution. That being said and since you explained it all, if you want to rerun the script, go ahead. Then I'll make the edits you've requested. If you like, we can do a Zoom session, too. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:10, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I did, but it did not put in the citations nor her photo. Yes, let's meet. Janicelp (talk) 23:57, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Janicelp, could you give me the URL for that sandbox? I don't see it in your contributions. I'll shoot you an email now with my available times for a meeting this week. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:06, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reviewing DYKs

edit

Besides familiarising yourself with actual review requirements, and that you can't approve your own alt hooks, I only found out you'd even done a review because I watch the talkpage - pinging nominators is an option, but if a review isn't passed straight away you should inform the nominator that it has done and they may need to address things by using one of the templates provided in the editing window of the review page. Axel jump

edit

You reverted my edit, whats the reason? Bemar (talk) 21:01, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bemar, these are the reasons I reverted your edit:
  • There are several typos and grammar errors.
  • The source you used isn't accessible, so there's no way to check its accuracy.
  • The source contradicts a more reliable one from the ISU, the international organization that oversees figure skating and which keeps detailed historical scores and achievements.
Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:48, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
1. If you saw typos and grammatical errors, you could simply correct them rather than delete the entire edit.
2. In all the results of the World and Euro Championships, a link is given to a certain Results list provided by the ISU; it is not available anywhere at all. My source is available; if you search in google the name of the newspaper “Soviet Sport”, you will find two archival repositories. For example, here are two links to the newspaper issues I indicated [3] [4]. There is a direct quote about Alexander Krysanov’s triple axel in 1974. It is possible to translate them into English using Google Translator.
3. ISU only provides data on its competitions. But the article may contain references to national competitions, such as with Midori Ito and the competition in Japan prefecture in 1988. Therefore, my edits did not contradict the ISU data, but only supplemented them.
Please return my edit, correcting grammar errors. And you do it, because you didn’t figure it out carefully, but preferred to delete my edit in a primitive way. Bemar (talk) 01:34, 7 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bemar, sorry it's taken me a little while to respond, things have been a little busy here and IRL. You shouldn't expect other editors to fix your typos and grammar errors for you. You also need to make sure that you format your sources correctly and that your sources are the most reliable. Please correct your own errors. The google translation of the source you provided is terrible and almost indecipherable in English; I assume that you read Russian, so please translate it, paraphrase the information, and add it to the article. Finally, the source needs to be the most reliable; in other words, more reliable than the ISU source. It's okay to supplement information about firsts with sources about non-international competitions, again as long as they're reliable, and I'm not sure that a Soviet-era news source is. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 16:42, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is necessary to translate not only the phrase highlighted in yellow, but one sentence, from point to point. And with the help of a Google translator, it is: “A student of coach E. Levin - A. Krysanov performed his famous Axel in 3.5 revolutions.” Is clearly unambiguous and understandable. In the second source, one word was indeed scanned with the error not “polovina”, but “polozina” (in Russian it mean "half"). However, this does not mean that the information itself is distorted, it means: “A remarkable event of the evening was a jump of three and a half revolutions, which was demonstrated for the first time by Moscow Spartak player Alexander Krysanov.” The newspaper "Soviet Sport" is an official organ of the USSR State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports. those. institutions of the USSR Government. There is an article about it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovetsky_Sport (it states that newspaper was distributed in 104 countries around the world, and there is no indication that the newspaper was propaganda or provided false information). I really ask you personally ;) please help me, since English is not my native language and I don’t know it so perfectly, correct my grammatical errors, because my edits are very small. Let's make Wikipedia more reliable together? Bemar (talk) 05:04, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bemar, but the Google translation isn't unambiguous and understandable at all. It isn't clear from either source where it took place, for example. The Wikipedia article about the newspaper also doesn't state that it wasn't propaganda. As a state-sponsored source, it can be argued that it's a self-published source. Yes, it can also be argued that the ISU is also self-published, but it's more reliable than a Soviet newspaper. I stand by my assertion that the information about Krysanov should remain stricken. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 16:57, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Fragments of articles mentioning the triple axel has the rest part and a title, I'm sure you know this very well, but you destructively continue to find fault. From the rest part and a title it is clear that the articles describe the USSR Cup competition in the city of Chelyabinsk on January 11, 1974! In the USSR, absolutely everything was sponsored by the state, cinema, literature, sports, etc, that was the system, but this does not mean the sources are biased and unauthoritative. I really regret that I wasted time communicating with you and was once again convinced of the destructive, unfair, biased position of western countries when it comes to Russia and russians. I don't need your answers anymore. I wanted to help develop Wikipedia, but I see that it prefers lies and I won’t help anymore. Bemar (talk) 20:28, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of File:Symptoms of Withdrawal cover.jpg

edit

The file File:Symptoms of Withdrawal cover.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

not used in a book article but in a biographical one. omission may not impact understanding of the book/memoir author in question; not contextually significant

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please see this page. Women in Green's "Around the World in 31 Days" GA Editathon – October 2024

edit

Hello Figureskatingfan:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Invitation to participate in a research

edit

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

edit

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is   AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion,   BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place,   Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are:   Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points,   Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points,   BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points,   Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and   AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Did you know nomination for Backflip

edit

Hello Christine, I think the article is a good candidate for Did you know. I wonder if there is a "was" too much in the teaser:

Did you know that the first backflip in figure skating was done at the Olympics was in 1988 by French skater Surya Bonaly, even though it was an illegal move?

But I am not a native English speaker. Kallichore (talk) 17:42, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Kallichore, I just finished my QPQ for the DYK. I will go and make the grammar corrections you suggest now. Thanks, Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:52, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I just watched the video of her backflip: It happened at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, not in 1988.--Kallichore (talk) 18:00, 1 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Kallichore, oh crap. Thanks for pointing that out, fixed the typo the 2x it was in the article and at DYK. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 03:13, 2 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
