Henry Porter
editHi GBH, I was wondering what the source was of the very comprehensive article you contributed on Henry Porter the Elizabethan dramatist. It reads as if it came from a book -- is it one (or several) of those cited in the References? Also I was curious to know why you replaced all the previously existing material from the Encyclopaedia Britannica? I'd have thought some of it might be worth keeping, such as the fact that Porter probably studied at Brasenose College. Flapdragon 20:49, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for including this in your project. See post at entry for full reply to Qs. I hope that is correct etiquette - I thought it would be more informative for those who may have the same Qs.GBH 13:14, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, that answers my questions exactly. Wikipedia rarely expresses itself in (for want of a better term) such dignified prose, and I wondered if I was reading something from an unattributed source. Thanks for what to an outsider to the subject looks like an excellent article. The project isn't mine incidentally, I just happened by on the trail of those Angry Women of Abington. By the way, a couple of technicalities: you can get italics using two single quotes ('') either side like this, and it's normal to wikilink only the first mention (eg Henslowe). Forgive me if you knew that already. Flapdragon 18:06, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Thieves' cant
editRegarding examples of Thieves' cant: you seem to have some amount of knowledge of this subject, while I have essentially none, so I'll bow to your greater wisdom and experience. I do feel that the article could benefit from a few (fewer than five, say) examples of genuine thieves' cant. I clearly am not qualified to distinguish this from the other entries in the source I used. If you are able to do so, it'd be great if you would add a few examples to the article.
Also, it'd be nice if you put a little info on your user page regarding your areas of interest/expertise, so I (and others) would know better what we can ask of you. Thanks. --Sopoforic 04:01, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Drovers' road
editYou reverted the changes I made to drovers' road, saying that the categories could be removed and transferred to drover when that article was full enough. It seems to me that drover (Australian) is in fact quite full, and could easily be adapted and renamed to make it the main article, with a lot of Australian content now, and some content from other countries, to be supplemented. Or you could simply copy content from it to the main article. I came at this from the angle of depopulating and reorganising the occupation categories . A road is not an occupation and as such should not link to two occupation categories, but you are welcome to add Category:Animal care occupations and Category:Agricultural occupations to other pages linked to drovers (people) and droving (the job). I will wait a couple of days for your response and, if I've heard nothing, remove the occupation categories again. BrainyBabe (talk) 21:08, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
BrainyBabe - You are right in principle. However, I think a rewrite of drover (Australian) to create a general article would be a major undertaking. If I had time I would attempt it but I can't see that in the next few months (I'm doing this quick note at the end of abother working day having not yet had a day off this year since I returned on 2nd). My argument is pragmatic. Wikipedia is intended to provide access to knowledge. The links as I have left them assist those seeking information in finding it. Removing them where the subject is incompletely covered is likely to hide such information as is available from users that would want to find it. Wikipedia is necessarily Work in Progress to some degree and we need to allow a little leeway. GBH (talk) 16:37, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- I have been busy elsewhere the past few weeks and let this drop, but see my recent comments at the drovers' road talkpage. BrainyBabe (talk) 12:40, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
