Condolences

edit

My deepest condolences to those who knew and loved him. I didn't know Philip, but saw lots of his edits. He was good, and will be missed. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:53, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Very sad news. My condolences to his family and friends. Guettarda (talk) 03:24, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

A terrible loss to the project. My condolences to his family. Kaldari (talk) 03:38, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Very sad. Philcha has long been the editor I name when describing the sort of editor that Wikipedia needs more of. His phylum-level articles are some of the gems of Wikipedia. Looie496 (talk) 18:04, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

We will not forget you! bibliomaniac15 06:23, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Will be remembered here for his excellent work. Shyamal (talk) 04:04, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

He did a lot for the English Wikipedia. My condolences to family and friends of Philcha. decltype (talk) 13:28, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

What a sad loss. I read tons of his stuff. Why is it always the good ones we lose? My sympathy to his family and friends. Pesky (talk) 18:09, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Our deepest condolences to his family and all the people who loved him, also on behalf of the Italian OTRS operators. It's always sad when this happens to one of us - but his "little" legacy will last forever, as Wikipedia will. Thank you Philcha. Thanks to Philip, who graced this project with excellent content contributions, mainly in the Natural Sciences, and with good spirits, who gave awards as freely as he received them. Let us finish his projects, such as ANematode1 and ANematode2 to which he dedicated his last edits, and his other sandboxes, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:15, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh how tragic. I remember the name a few years back on here. My deepest heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Philcha.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:09, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

A proposal

edit

If the user page is to be preserved in Philcha's memory it would be nice if it showed his many achievements on wikipedia. They were on the page up until this point but for some reason he then deleted most of the page. Couldn't the page content be restored to include everything from "Things I have done" downwards? If it's not considered to be appropriate to return the content he deleted himself then maybe there should just a link to the old version of the page for anyone who's interested in knowing what he contributed to the project. Richerman (talk) 08:19, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pilcha is beyond our power to help or harm. His pages are really for the living, to help with remembrance, and grief. If people are for it, go and do it. Feel free to move my post announcing his death to the talk page if that's what's needed, too.--Wehwalt (talk) 08:30, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I am very sad to hear about Philcha; he was so very helpful to me on On The Origin of Species and elsewhere. I strongly support restoring the older version of his talk page and adding the notice of his passing to that, so that those of us who remain can better appreciate all he contributed to our community. Rusty Cashman (talk) 18:13, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I was going to do it today but I see the page has now been protected so I can't unless someone unprotects it again. Richerman (talk) 06:17, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've unprotected the page to allow friends to properly restore or add material. I believe this came up at RFPP with a request to protect, which is common in these unfortunate circumstances, and I complied. Once it is to a point that full protection is desired, feel free to ping me and I will be happy to do so. Dennis Brown - © 12:16, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've restored much of the old page - please make any changes you feel appropriate in the next few days so the page can be protected again. Richerman (talk) 12:51, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for letting him speak, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:58, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sad news indeed. I see now where at least some of that kindness was coming from. Thank you, Philcha and my condolences to your friends and family. --regentspark (comment) 03:19, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I did not interact directly with Philcha much (if at all). I am very sorry to learn about his death. My condolences to his family and friends. LadyofShalott 15:07, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Very sorry to hear this, Phicha was immensely helpful with work on a couple of articles I was trying to get up to good article standard. He will be much missed, and my condolences to all who were close to him, . dave souza, talk 20:38, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Philcha and I interacted here and there on biology articles - I am sad to read this. Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:16, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I was very sorry indeed to see this. He'll be greatly missed. I send my condolences to his family and friends. SlimVirgin (talk) 18:36, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I just learned of Philcha's death. I enjoyed working with him on both his and my GAs, especially his Fossils of the Burgess Shale. He was good company here at the 'pedia. hamiltonstone (talk) 04:50, 10 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I also just learned about this, after becoming aware of his illness just a few months ago. Never interacted with him that much, but we shared a lot of the same interests. His name became familiar to me through his work on the higher-tier articles on biology and invertebrate paleontology. He will be missed.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 18:30, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I spent a lot of time working with Philcha; he was a great companion on Wikipedia, always an encouragement, always enthusiastic, and great fun to work alongside. I'm deeply saddened to hear of his death. Martin (Smith609 – Talk) 09:12, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

O dear. I think it has been a while since we were last in touch. I was struggling with some music GANs, and Philcha offered to take over a couple, but then became ill and had to hand them back. I really think that was our last contact. This has saddened me greatly. "Let me forget about today until tomorrow". SilkTork ✔Tea time 00:33, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I interacted with Philcha a few times, and he was always a pleasure to work with. Today I saw his name on an old post, and decided to look to see if he was retired. I wasn't expecting this—I never knew about his illness. Wikipedia has lost one of its most professional and polite editors. Even though I hardly knew him, I will miss him. – Maky « talk » 23:37, 6 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have not been very active on Wikipedia for several years now, and only just now (very belatedly) learned of Philcha's untimely death. I am very sorry to learn of his passing. He was an outstanding editor. We wrangled over the Staunton-Morphy controversy, and were ultimately each awarded a Half Barnstar by SyG for our efforts. Philcha was unfaltering in his efforts to reach consensus, even when I was in retrospect probably being a bit of a jerk. I thought he was being unreasonable, but I eventually came around. He gave me wise counsel when I was in an editing war over Anne Applebaum. He was a great editor and a very good person. Krakatoa (talk) 05:04, 18 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I came here to learn something about the editor who made very good comment to the Great Oxygenation Event article

edit

When I read Philcha's comment, arguing that the vision of the oxygenation event as an extinction catastrophe was old-fashioned, and asking about what lines of living organisms are known to have become extinct due to it, I thought that he had made a very sensible observation. Many details concerning the sequence and reasons of this event are on debate now, but media depicts it as a simplistic story of cyanobacterias intoxicating and killing everything. So I came here and learned that he had passed away, and thought I would like to share my admiration for his contribution. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.137.186.85 (talk) 06:52, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
