You're doing well with the population histories for the various townships; keep it up! And thanks for the new pictures of the land offices in Steubenville and Marietta; I tried to get the Marietta office and the Putnam house, but unfortunately the museum was closed that day. Rayland?

edit

If you and your camera get a chance to go to southeastern Jefferson County, could you try to get a photo of the Stringer Stone House, located at 224 Warren in Rayland? I was there last spring, but forgot to get a picture; this page has a photo and explanation of how to find it. Additionally, could you try to get an overview of the construction site that's around 40°12′0″N 40°40′30″W / 40.20000°N 40.67500°W / 40.20000; -40.67500? There was formerly an Indian mound there (the Speedway Mound), but when I tried to find it last spring, locals told me that it had apparently been destroyed in the process of demolishing the raceway that used to be in the construction site. You could upload such a picture with a description somewhere along the lines of "overview of the area where the Speedway Mound used to be". Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 22:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

No problem; thanks! One other thing: do you know if you could try to get to the Seven Ranges Terminus? It's in the woods, so the light won't be a big problem, and it's small enough that flash would work easily if you could find the marker. Plus, you won't need to worry about the poison ivy right now :-) Nyttend (talk) 23:42, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Party column

edit

I don't think we should have the same party carry through to multiple representatives. I think that if, for example, two Reps are both Democrats, then it should have a separate "Democratic" line for each of them. That's what we've done on other pages, but I'd like to hear what you think.—GoldRingChip 13:42, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The boilerplate for this topic is of no help, see here Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Congress/Congressional districts/Boilerplate . I have no strong feelings either way. A short look at other states seems to support what you are saying. Maybe I'll update the boilerplate to make it more clear, if that seems to be the unwritten consensus. Roseohioresident (talk) 18:22, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I wrote the Boilerplate, and nobody has edited it or commented on it. So that's just (again) my opinion, and not a consensus. Alas.—GoldRingChip 18:35, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
The boilerplate seems to have no column for congresses. There is one approach, Ohio's 10th congressional district, that seems to be similar to the approach of List of United States Senators from Ohio, while others like Ohio's 12th congressional district seems to take neater approach. I prefer the latter. Maybe a better place to discuss would be Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. Congress/Congressional districts/Boilerplate. Roseohioresident (talk) 18:43, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I think I prefer the table at Ohio's 9th congressional district, where all the congresses served by that Rep are in the same box. —GoldRingChip 00:20, 5 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Stringer Stone House

edit

Thanks for the update! Can't say that I'm surprised; I went through Rayland a couple of years ago and tried to find it, but couldn't. Perhaps you could just stand at the Dairy Queen and take a picture of the open ground to the east? Better an empty lot (and likewise, an empty field for the Speedway Mound) than no photograph at all. Judging by the house numbers, I'm guessing that the coordinates for the house are too far east. I've started checking coords (and changing them on the lists when appropriate) for every photo that I upload; lately I'm hitting tons of bad coords, as you can see by looking at this series of changes from a photo trip that I've not yet finished uploading. Nyttend (talk) 19:02, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I went through Rayland again today and photographed the spot where the house sat before its 1982 fire; I'll be uploading the image when I get the chance. Nyttend (talk) 00:47, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

John Smith

edit

Hi Rose,

I noticed that you reverted my redirection of John Smith (Ohio Senator) to the John Smith disambiguation page. I did so because the disambiguator "Ohio Senator" seems to me (and likely to the casual reader) to refer to a member of the Ohio Senate and therefore to John Quincy Smith and not John Smith (United States Senator from Ohio). Because the title could refer to either of these people, I think a redirection to the disambiguation page, or else a simple deletion of the redirect, would be beneficial here. What do you think?

Neelix (talk) 18:05, 11 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • I think you are amazingly astute to be the first reader on earth to notice this after John Smith has had an article for almost ten years. I can think of no one else who would think of a state senator when hearing the title "Senator" instead of thinking of a United States Senator. Roseohioresident (talk) 20:43, 13 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Perhaps that is because you are an American. As an outsider, it makes much more sense to me to use the phrase "Ohio Senator" to refer to a member of the Ohio Senate, and this assumption is likely to be made by most other non-Americans as well, and Wikipedia is not specific to the United States. Would you object to having the redirect deleted? Neelix (talk) 22:15, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Survey: use of Chronicling America on Wikipedia

edit

Roseohioresident:

My name is Donald Taylor and I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence with the University of Maryland Libraries, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project. The Historic Maryland Newspapers Project is a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, a joint program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are digitizing historic state newspapers for inclusion in the Library of Congress's Chronicling America online digital collection of America’s historical newspapers.

We are conducting a survey of Wikipedia contributors who have cited Chronicling America as a reference in their edits to Wikipedia. It is the objective of our study to identify ways that Chronicling America might be made a better resource for people editing Wikipedia. We recently used Linkypedia to identify contributors who have used Chronicling America. As an editor who has made use of Chronicling America, we hope that you will take our survey.

If you are interested in taking our survey, you can do so at this website.

More information about the survey is provided before you begin answering survey questions. Participation in the survey is strictly voluntary. It should take you less than thirty minutes to complete. You must be at least 18 years old to participate. If you have any questions about this survey, you can contact Donald Taylor, Wikipedian-in-Residence for the Historic Maryland Newspapers Project, at dwtii@umd.edu, or Elizabeth Caringola, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project Librarian, at ecaringo@umd.edu.

If you decide to take this survey, please do so within a week, by Wednesday, 31 July 2014.

Hi, Roseohioresident! I'm confused here: there are 2 very similarly-named communities in Washington County, namely Grandview (U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Grandview) and Grand View (U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Grand View). Now I realize I have written Grand View, Ohio, but I don't know which of these communities the history section is describing. What should I do? – Gilliam (talk) 09:17, 30 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I didn't mean whether these 2 communities are notable... I'm stuck because there is both a Grand View and a Grandview in Washington County. Google Maps doesn't help me find out which one is where. I wrote an article called Grand View, Ohio but I'm not really sure which of those 2 GNIS links it refers to. If I knew how to enter the GNIS coords into Google Maps it would tell me.– Gilliam (talk) 04:31, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
So if "Grand View" is the neighborhood of Marietta, and "Grandview" is the unincorporated community, I made a mistake calling the page Grand View, Ohio. I'm going to move that page to Grandview, Washington County, Ohio. Right?– Gilliam (talk) 04:58, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your help. The source mentions Grandview is in Grandview Township, so I'm confident the history section is pertaining to the right community.– Gilliam (talk) 05:29, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello again; I had assumed you were no longer around, as I don't remember seeing any of your edits until today, but now I see that I was wrong there.

In the past, you contributed lots of images of Carroll County and surrounding areas. Would you be willing to go out and get more images of unillustrated spots? See User:Nyttend/Ohio, which tracks municipalities and townships that don't have good illustrative photos; most of the fully illustrated counties are in the western half of the state, with nothing farther east than Lawrence and Vinton counties in the far south (and I just got them in the past week, with a trip on Tuesday), except for Carroll County. If you're interested in resuming your photography, it would be great to see the fully-illustrated blob expand in eastern Ohio. Nyttend (talk) 03:40, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why is it needed?

edit

Ney spend a little time as a younger man in Iran. It's not really all that significant in the first place. The vast majority of English speaking users will already know what Iran is since it has been a regular part of the news and conversation. We're not talking about a more obscure nation like Burkina Faso or someone like that. Then the link goes to a generic article about Iran, which doesn't mention Ney or anything he was involved with. It would be like linking "sand" or "shoe". Yes, Ney owns shoes, but going to that article really doesn't add to understanding Ney. Niteshift36 (talk) 16:26, 13 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Niteshift36: whatever. I don't happen to see it as overlinking. I'm going back to my old practice of never editing living people, too many agendas out there. Roseohioresident (talk) 16:39, 13 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Agenda? I eliminated a lot of needless wikilinks from that article, including "golf" and "entertainment". Why is eliminating "Iran" in the middle of all of it an agenda? You made the allegation, now back it up. Niteshift36 (talk) 17:30, 13 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Niteshift36: Poorly worded, the _agenda_'s did not refer to you, but to the environment in general. By the way, if you uploaded photos to commons instead of wikipedia, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard , they would be available to all the projects, not just to English wikipedia. Ohio Wikimedians User Group: Join us!

edit

Hi Rose!

In Columbus Ohio, several members of Wikipedia Connection are forming the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. Our goal is to expand our efforts beyond Columbus to create an organized group that promotes Wikipedia, puts together events, and forms a better local community here in Ohio. We'd love to have you on-board as one of our founding members! Being a part of the user group will allow easy communication between active Ohio editors, notifications of upcoming events in the Ohio area, and, if you're interested, the opportunity to help organize events such as edit-a-thons or workshops. If our User Group is approved in time, we plan for our first event to be a Wiknic in early July.

If interested, feel free to add yourself to the list at the bottom of our page on Meta. Also feel free to contribute to the page itself, or ask any questions you may have. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:29, 20 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

I am not a web host provider. I am logged into my account, yet I get an error message saying I am blocked because "the IP address I am currently using is believed to be a web host provider. To prevent abuse, web hosts may be blocked from editing Wikipedia." User:DeltaQuad seems to be responsible for this action. What's the point of being logged in? My IP right now is 216.66.55.105 , error message says I am blocked for "Editing from 216.66.0.0/18 "

Accept reason:

With the blocking admin's consent, I have removed the range block and replaced it with a more narrow block on the rabb.it VPN service. That explicitly does not include the IP address you specified, so you should be good to go now. Yamla (talk) 22:00, 19 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@DeltaQuad:, many IP addresses in the 216.66.0.0/18 netblock do appear to belong to rabbit/rabb.it, but my rdns lookups on 216.66.55.105 don't show a connection. Right now, rabbit seems to be using 204.141.211.0/24, 216.66.6.0/24, and 216.66.71.0/24, none of which contain 216.66.55.105. Perhaps, should your block be tightened up? --Yamla (talk) 13:19, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've just trimmed back User:Nyttend/Ohio a bit more — I went through several southern counties while coming home from a Christmas trip, and now the southernmost unillustrated jurisdiction is in Summit County. Of course I know that it's a good distance away, but nevertheless...if you could reach any of the 42 unillustrated spots to help finish off this project, it would be quite appreciated. Or if you know any other editors who are active in northeastern Ohio, that too would be great. Nyttend (talk) 03:20, 10 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:Frazier Reams.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Frazier Reams.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Arbor to SJ (talk) 07:14, 21 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

2019 US Banknote Contest

edit
  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
