I did have a question about the picture you posted to the Central American Squirrel Monkey article. Are you sure it is a Central American Squirrel Monkey and not a Black-capped Squirrel Monkey? Because there is no location or species specific information listed with the photo, and the two species look very similar to me but it seems to me that Central American Squirrel Monkeys tend to have a deeper and pointier peak from the cap between the eyes. Rlendog (talk) 02:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
- I found out you were right. It was a Black-capped Squirrel Monkey. I was an utter fool. −−The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 00:04, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Timmy! You used the American spelling for "favourite". I am appalled. —A Concerned Onlooker P.S. However, your mention of personality types, O Fellow INTP, quite makes up for that. I am mollified somewhat.
NowCommons: File:Lilac crowned amazon in Mexico.jpg
editFile:Lilac crowned amazon in Mexico.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:Amazona finschi -Mexico-6a.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:Amazona finschi -Mexico-6a.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 08:58, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I would have put the picture on Wikimedia Commons myself except I was on Wikipedia at the time and forgot to go to Commons. The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 17:41, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

editPer your concerns here, I've modified template:Cloud types. In the case of most templates, anyone can edit it, but some high-visibility templates are protected so that only people with administrative privileges can edit them. Cloud types happens not to be one of those. Thanks for pointing out the error. Icy // ♫ 21:25, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- OK, great. By the way, can you edit any template just by typing in the name and pressing the edit button on the top (unless it's protected of course)? --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 22:11, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- If I understand you - yeah, pretty much, just like an article, I suppose. Icy // ♫ 23:12, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

editYou have uploaded at least seven SVG files showing the scheme of volcanic eruptions, including Hawaiian Eruption-numbers.svg, Surtseyan Eruption-numbers.svg, and Pelean Eruption-numbers.svg. Could you please upload a file showing the scheme of a Plinian eruption? --The High Fin Sperm Whale 01:27, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hi THFSW,
- In fact, I've uploaded nine diagrams. Plinian eruption is one of them. See Commons:Diagrams of volcanic eruption.

Re:Deletion
editAt the time the articles were deleted they had consisted of a single line that was meant to serve as a placer for a better article to be added later on. Since there was no meaningful substantive content I deleted the article in accordance with the tagged deletion request on the page. On the matter of restoration: the articles are now redirects, and they are better off for being so. I will not restore the versions I deleted, as those will only be re-deleted by the first admin who finds the articles. TomStar81 (Talk) 02:19, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- But then where on Wikipedia can information be found on those cameras, since the article on Canon PowerShot S only has information on a table? --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 19:03, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- In the article you linked to above. If you feel this coverage to be inadequate then be bold and update the page so it more adequately reflects the camera models. TomStar81 (Talk) 23:23, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- I would like to do that, but the problem is, I got all my information from the articles. --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 15:16, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
The change from K2 to K2 (mountain) [and from Talk:K2 to Talk:K2 (mountain)
editG'day User:The High Fin Sperm Whale.
In all honesty I don't think I agree with this change you just implemented. You can see on K2 (disambiguation) that this K2 is by far the most known variety there is, so I'd propose changing it back and have the other pages make sure they specify things clear enough as to avoid confusion. Qwrk (talk) 19:31, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Makes sense. I guess it should be changed back, since no one thinks it's a good idea. But there is still the very big problem of the fact that I accidentally created two identical articles for K2 and K2 (mountain). Could you please contact an administrator (I couldn't find any)? --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 19:51, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for touching base. I think you're best off contacting User:Silence since s/he appears to be a person in the know, and from his/her talk page I get it s/he's made a comparable move some time ago. Qwrk (talk) 20:33, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Golden Ears
editMy rationale is simple....well, sort of. Basically "Golden Ears Group" is an invented term, courtesy bivouac.com and is not a mountain range name....and "Golden Ears" is not singular, it is a "group". Your comparison or Everest/Himalayas is not valid; the Golden Ears are part of the Garibaldi Ranges, and I wasn't proposing those be merged. See "Golden Ears (peaks)". BC Geographical Names. and note that label "peaks", i.e. not singular "mountain"..."Golden Ears" by itself is already a small range, the addition of "Group" is entirely superfluous and has no basis in actual usage; the term "Golden Ears" is used (by those who see them every day) to refer to the whole group of peaks between Alouette and Pitt Lakes, though as you can see its official use is only for the two peaks N of Mt Blanshard....essentially "Golden Ears (mountain)" and "Golden Ears Group" refer to the same thing, and the "(mountain)" disambiguation is incorrect to start with...(it's not one mountain).Skookum1 (talk) 16:17, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, I see we have a bigger and not unassociated problem; somebody has redirected the official "Mount Blanshard", which as you can see in BCGNIS refers to the whole massif, to Golden Ears Group....in instance of an official name being redirected to a coined one based on one error-ridden site's say-so. Blanshard Peak is the summit of Mount Blanshard, with the latter term including the two Golden Ears....as with Mount Fraser and others in the Rockies, which have multiple summits, these are massifs, NOT ranges or "groups". Maybe what's necessary is to move "Golden Ears Group" to "Mount Blanshard" and to make use of the "Group" title redirect that to Golden Ears (peaks), which is the proper designation for "the Ears". Please note I also took out the inaccurate claim that Golden Ears Provincial Park is "one of the largest in British Columbia" which was found on various pages.....Skookum1 (talk) 16:35, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- From "Blanshard, Mount". BC Geographical Names.:
- Blanshard Peak (1550m), Golden Ears (2 peaks, 1701m and 1716m) and Edge Peak (1680m) are part of Mount Blanshard.
- Seems pretty cut-and-dried to me....though there are other peaks in the same "range" such as Martyn and Nutt and Blanshard Needle (which maybe is Edge Peak, can't remember?)....the upshot is that the "Golden Ears Group" designation is like creating "Robie Reid Group" to take in Mount Crickmer and Blue and Iron Mtns, or relabelling Mount Seymour and/or Fannin Range as Mount Seymour Group.....Skookum1 (talk) 16:41, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- From "Blanshard, Mount". BC Geographical Names.:

Your rollback request
editHello The High Fin Sperm Whale, I have granted rollback rights to your account in accordance with your request. Please be aware that rollback should be used to revert vandalism/spam/blatantly unconstructive edits, and that using it to revert anything else (by revert-warring or reverting edits you disagree with) can lead to it being removed from your account...sometimes without any warning, depending on the admin who becomes aware of any misuse. If you think an edit should require a reason for reverting, then don't use rollback and instead, use a manual edit summary. For practice, you may wish to see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback. Good luck. Acalamari 03:21, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Eagle image
editYou replaced Haliaeetus leucocephalus-tree-USFWS.jpg with Haliaeetus leucocephalus -Skagit valley-8.jpg. I don't want to start an edit war with you, so I'll just ask: are you sure that Haliaeetus leucocephalus -Skagit valley-8.jpg is actually better? For one thing, tree-USFWS is much higher resolution (3,000 × 4,286 px as opposed to 2,712 × 2,736 px) and is closer up, so shows much more detail. I personally think that tree-USFWS is better for the article. Please send me a message on my talk page. --The High Fin Sperm Whale (Talk • Contribs) 21:48, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- I expect everyone has their own opinion about photographs. I think that the new one I added to the article shows the full length of the bird well and is in sharp focus. The previous image shows the back of the eagle and looks rather fuzzy to me. The actual pixel size is irrelevant. Anyway, it is probably time for a change in the infobox image. Snowman (talk) 00:01, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- I actually think that tree-USFWS is sharper, but anyways, should we change it back in, say, a few months, or get a new picture altogether? --The High Fin Sperm Whale (Talk • Contribs) 00:44, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Conformation of requesting an account on the ACC interface
editThis is to confirm that I requested an account on the ACC account creation interface. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 04:54, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for applying to access the account creation tool. I have approved your request so welcome to the team. You may now access the tool here. Before you do so, please read the tool's guide to familiarize yourself with the process. You may also want to join #wikipedia-en-accounts on IRC where a bot informs us when new account requests come in as well as the mailing list.
- Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day (a day being from 0:00 UTC to 23:59 UTC), although you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked "Account Creator Needed". However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at WP:PERM.
- Please keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse may result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome! ---- Александр Дмитрий (Alexandr Dmitri) (talk) 10:58, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Page for gastropod requests?
editHi HFSW, Thanks for your note. As far as I know we do not have such a page, so I just now asked User:Snek01 whether we have one and whether he thought we should go ahead and create one. Of course if we do make one, it doesn't mean that the articles that people list on there will rapidly get made! Most editors in the project have their favorite areas to work on and pursue those areas more or less to the exclusion of other subject areas (which is fine). Also it is certainly true that some taxa have very little information published on them and therefore are hard to write about. But anyway, let me see what Snek thinks and get back to you. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 00:53, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hello, request can be written at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods/to do. It is accessed easily at Portal:Gastropods. --Snek01 (talk) 11:32, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

- Thanks for Astraea undosa High Fin! Best, Invertzoo (talk) 14:19, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes I did say that, but I see that I forgot to put the links in! I went back and did that just now, so thanks for pointing that out to me. They are not my personal images on Flickr; they are on Snek's photostream favorites from other people page as available free use images. He usually uploads them for us one by one when I request it. Are you a hermit crab fancier? Some people keep them as pets. Invertzoo (talk) 23:46, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- No I haven't. I haven't really learned how to do that yet. I usually ask Snek to upload images to Commons for me. Invertzoo (talk) 00:58, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks High Fin for Megathura crenulata! I appreciate your work! Invertzoo (talk) 01:03, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
- Well they all have links now on Snek's page that will take you to the appropriate Flickr page, that is if you know what to do next. I will ask Snek tomorrow I guess. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 03:02, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Using GIMP for svg files
editHello Sémhur. I hear you can use GIMP to make svg files. And you said on Commons:Meet our illustrators that you took lessons from Sting (talk · contribs). Were did you take them? I would like to use GIMP for svgs. Please answer on my EnWiki talk page. Thanks. --The High Fin Sperm Whale (d) 9 mars 2010 à 05:13 (CET)
- Hi THFSW,
- I'm afraid it's a misunderstanding. I don't use the GIMP to make SVG files, but Inkscape, which looks familiar to GIMP users because the interface was based on CorelDRAW and GIMP.
- About Sting's lessons, I just followed the cartographic tutorials he made. They are here, but in French. You can find it in English here, but the translation is not finished yet.

Underwater diving
editHi, thanks for adding the {{UnderwaterDiving}} navbox to scuba articles. I see you removed a stub template from Underwater diving, but left the talk page assessment as stub-class. Did you intend to re-assess the article, or was the removal a mistake? I'm really happy for any other opinions on assessments of scuba-related articles, as it's been a lonely job so far. The principal reason I don't see that article as more than stub-class is that it fails to "provide enough sources to establish verifiability" per WP:WikiProject SCUBA/Assessment, which I think is required for start-class. I'd be happy to discuss this here to keep the debate together (and there's no need for talkback as I now have your page on my watchlist). Thanks! --RexxS (talk) 06:26, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- No, it was not a mistake, I just forgot to remove the sub class. I don't think the article qualifies as a stub, but if you think otherwise, you can add it back. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 00:37, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm happy to defer to your view that that article doesn't qualify as a stub, so I've changed the assessment to start-class. --RexxS (talk) 03:39, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

WP:TOL standard policy is to use the genus name as a title, not the species name. E.g. Suuwassea emilieae redirects to Suuwassea, not the other way around. There are some exceptions, but this is only where we have nomenclatorial problems or other articles use the genus-name title. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 03:18, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

editHi The High Fin Sperm Whale: Many thanks for deleting the vandalism from my user page. My feeling is that it was the same person from a Toronto IP address who vandalized it several hours earlier, but that address was blocked. At least they were forced to go to some friends house to edit on Wikipedia. But it does suggest they have a memory and my feeling is that they will be back. editHello! On the 28th of April you added information in the Varanus bitatawa article in which you stated that it is Critically Endangered according to the IUCN 3.1. However, I have not been able to find any information about the species on the IUCN page. I would appreciate if you could present me with a url so that I could add it as a source in the Swedish article! Thank you. Sincerely Jopparn (talk) 22:02, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

editHello,
Would you mind formally creating and registering User:THFSW as an alternate account. At present you are occupying, with a redirect of the user page, an available user name that someone else could register. - How about tagging or redirecting the talk page too, just so you don't get messages there in the future. From personal experience i find it a good idea. Now you can use it in your signature, which would free up characters and allow a fancy signature if you wish. delirious & lost ☯ ~нuɢѕ~ 20:19, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Caracol Falls
editSaw your reward board post. I did some research, but all that seems to be out there is tourist-y stuff. I added a few citations and added further detail about the surrounding geography (the falls height, the valley, etc.). Seems to be all one can do for now. If there's any historical significance, it's not noted in any searchable books. NielsenGW (talk) 17:48, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- First off, thanks for the barnstars! I just noticed that you look for replies here or I would've stopped by sooner. Now on to the actual reason I'm here, I've moved the article to Caracol Falls, which appears to be the correct capitalization. I've also added a news reference which gives some tourism information and another travel book which replaces the blog as a reliable source for the cable car. Now that I'm getting into it I think it would be fun to try and flesh it out enough today and tomorrow and submit it to WP:DYK, but it's still just shy of 1,000 characters of prose and the absolute minimum is 1,500. If you have any other ideas for places I could look or facts about the waterfall itself that could be added (since you're a WikiProject Waterfalls member) I'd appreciate it if you could reply here. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:44, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

- They're submitted at T:TDYK. And I think you started the article with everything that's at the World Waterfall Database except for the scenic ratings and magnitude which seem a little out there to me, so I guess I'll just keep trying to drack down other translatable sources which might be useful for expansion. - Thanks, but I'll pass. I just saw your post at WP:REWARD and since it was a barebones stub figured I was bound to find at least something to help (on occasion I get a "will work for barnstars" urge). Would you reconsider your removal of whale audio in "List of whale songs" article?
editHi THFSP. I wonder if you would reconsider your removal of the audio file Humpbackwhale2.ogg from the List of Whale Songs article.
It is unique and quite fascinating to listen to. Maybe you thought it was redundant since there are other Humpback audio clips in the remainder of the article. However, this one is different, and much more "expressive" than the others that follow later.
I see that you have a wealth of Wiki experience, so I leave it to your discretion as to what to do here. Thanks. Best Regards, Spyrogumas (talk) 23:53, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- No, I didn't actually remove it. I just moved it to the section on humpback whale songs. It's still there. --The High Fin Sperm Whale 00:59, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, maybe I'm dense, or just too green at this, but I don't see it. There are 3 humpback audios in "List of whale songs" article ... and none of them are the Humpbackwhale2.ogg link. Re: Adminship
editHi, HFSW. Thanks for your kind note and flattering offer. I'm gratified, but I'm going to have to decline for the moment, for a couple of reasons: first, I haven't had a ton of time for Wikipedia recently (which is why I've been doing mostly UAA notices -- something I can do when I'm actually engaged in a real-life, non-WP task). The RfA itself requires the candidate's close attention and I don't have the time or attention to devote to it at the moment. Second, User:Rlevse made a similar offer a couple of years ago (which I also declined), and I think as a courtesy I should give him right of first refusal if his offer still stands. May I get back you at a later date if and when I feel more ready? Thanks very much for your gratifying confidence. -- Rrburke (talk) 21:27, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer granted
editYou have been granted the 'reviewer' userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. –xenotalk 13:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

astrophotography
editHey HFSW. Further to your post on science ref desk, I noticed you're away for a month so I thought it's more likely you'll look here then the science archives. I'm a bit of an amateur astronomer myself, I own a 12" telescope but I'm more into observational, not so much into astrophotography. However, the best astro community website that I've ever come across is called iceinspace.com.au it is Australian but has members all over the world. It was started by a guy called Mike Salway from Sydney who has done some amazing things imaging Jupiter in particular with his telescope and a web cam. Over the years the site has developed an INCREDIBLY strong astro photography community. Members regularly get their work presented on APOD (Nasa's Astronomy Picture of the Day website). But as talented and skilled as many of the members are, they are also very "noob" friendly and welcoming to beginners, both to astro photography and astronomy in general, you'll never be made to feel like an idiot and no one will ever tell you to come back after you RTFM like so many other "specialised" forums I've been on. I highly recommend you check it out. Vespine (talk) 23:22, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

RD/S Thrust vectoring - X-36
editHello, 'Cetacean Editor'
I tried to find some info regarding your question on Reference desk/Science. Couldn't find any initially. A later search did turn up a lot of PDFs of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics scientific papers from their "Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibits" at http://www.cs.odu.edu/~mln/ltrs-pdfs/
There doesn't seem to be an index and the document filenames give no idea of what they contain. What you are after ie. pics of the thrust vectoring system (or other interesting aviation stuff) may be there, but you'll have to down-load the PDF's and have a look to find out! (If you have the number of a relevant paper it will help a lot!) There is the strong possibilty that such pics are classified and therefore not available, esp if the technology is currently used, in the B2 bomber for example.

DYK nom
editHi... I noticed you nominated the article Pholiota squarrosa for DYK. The article won't pass in it's current form as it is too short. The minimum size is 1500 characters of readable text, which does not include boxes, lists, quotes, etc. At present, the article is above 1500 bytes, but is under 400 characters of readable text. You can check by typing "javascript:importScript('User:Shubinator/DYKcheck.js'); dykCheck();" into your browser's command line (without the quotes). Also, the facts in the DYK hook (like the garlic odour) must be supported by inline citations. You have a few days while your nomination is at T:TDYK to improve the article, so please keep working on it. :) Thanks for contributing. EdChem (talk) 18:21, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi... I saw your post at my talk page. You have been including inline citations (using the ref tags), but I have reformatted one to use the template "cite web". These extra details are desirable in case the link becomes dead, and naked url links are not accepted at DYK. Your garlic odour statement is in the proposed DYK hook, so the related sentence in the article must have a citation immediately following it. It can be a cross-ref, if one of the existing links provides the info. Please let me know if I can be of any further help. EdChem (talk) 06:46, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi again... the time available for fixing this is almost gone. The article needs substantial expansion to meet the 1500 character requirement. EdChem (talk) 12:58, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like Sasata has done an excellent job on expanding Pholiota squarrosa, your DYK has been approved. :) EdChem (talk) 12:24, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
- You can see it at WP:DYK/Q, it is in queue 3 and is due to be placed on the main page starting in 10 hours and 6 minutes from the time-stamp of this message. DYKs are displayed for 6 hours. The queue page gives the schedule in various time zones. The expanded article is pretty impressive, maybe you might want to offer to share DYK credit with Sasata - but that is between the two of you. If you do, post at WT:DYK and an admin can change the queue so you both get credit. The page that would need to be changed is protected. Regards, EdChem (talk) 01:54, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
