Updates to tables
editKoppapa - Would you be willing to take a look at these lists and provide any updates that you're knowledgable of: Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Women's football task force/Leagues? Hmlarson (talk) 15:04, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- MbahGondrong - I wanted to extend this to you as well. I recall you made contributions to a similar list that was added to WP:FPL around July 2013 but deleted. Any input is appreciated. Hmlarson (talk) 10:59, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- It's pretty good. Can't add much. Found a 2015 champion of Kyrgyzstan. -Koppapa (talk) 08:16, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
Notes on the table (invitation for input/suggestions!)
editThanks for setting this page up, Hmlarson. I was messing around in my sandbox with some sort of list/table/template for leagues and seasons, and got bold and added some columns a couple of weeks ago for specific seasons. I don't know if it makes it too big/too clunky; I really like the extra links, but I'm also generally longwinded and have a tendency towards just including everything. I would not be offended if people removed/greatly changed anything, but figured I'd try to give a short description of stuff here to aid in keeping things updated (meant to do this 2 weeks ago, but got sidetracked from the internet):
- "recent/current season": either a link to the most recent/current season, or if those pages don't exist, a short note on the most recent information available for the league on its main page
- "upcoming season (redlink)": either a redlink for a current/soon to start season, or blank if 1) said season article already exists or 2) said season article seems unlikely to ever exist given lack of recent season articles or state of league article/sourcing/etc.
- today I put a background color in this column for places where we're in the first case above (at the moment, these are leagues where a 2017-2018 season article exists). again, I have mixed feelings about it (makes table even less future-proof?) and am totally cool if someone reverts that.
for me, the goal of a page like this is that it be easy to read/update, and useful to editors ("oh wow, I can read Spanish, I should make translated season articles for the Ecuadoran league"). Sometimes when things get big/unwieldy, they lose one or both of the above, which I'm trying to stay conscious of in my zeal for added information.Cleancutkid (talk) 23:21, 15 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Cleancutkid: - Thanks for working on the list(s). What are your thoughts about using the "Current season" column specifically for current season links and moving some of the extraneous details to a Notes column on the far right? Then changing the "Upcoming season (redlink)" header to something like "Season articles needing creation". This might afford a little more opportunity for scaling in the future as more and more season articles are created.
- With the goal of making it clear for editors of varying skill level and wikicomfort, I think:
- this format would help us decipher what leagues need to be moved to the non-active table (perhaps we can create a third table for those that have unclear status)
- Moving the ones that are unclear or inactive from the Active top division leagues table would also help strengthen our focus on priorities for article creation.
- we should add some clear instructions above the table for making updates and include a note that a redlink in the Current season column indicates the need for article creation.
- Here's a demo of what my suggestions would look like (open to suggestions for improvement):
Country | League | Conf | Season runs | Current season | Season articles needing creation | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Albania | Kampionati Femrave | UEFA | October−May[1] | 2017–18 | 2017–18 2016-17 |
Previous season example: 2015–16 2016-17 stats |
Australia | W-League | AFC | October/November − January/February [2] | 2017–18 | see initiative | |
El Salvador | Salvadoran women's football championship | CONCACAF |

- I like this a lot! I think it's both understandable and useful (especially with annotation at the top). Feel free to adjust yourself, or I might have some time this week. Personally, I don't think all of the redlink seasons are of the highest priority to create (plus some are hard to find reliable sources for), but it would be nice to have a resource showing what's there and what isn't. Along the same line (though any season article some editor is willing to create is cool by me!), there are some leagues for which I think that a well-written league article including season-by-season recap might be easier to keep up and/or more appropriate than separate pages for each season, too (or a "List of [country] [league] seasons" article). Some league articles are solid, but some are pretty miserable. My goal over the next couple of months is to bring in some more text (and citations) to extant articles. - @Cleancutkid: I updated the structure. Next steps will be drafting some instructions for review and creating a separate table for those leagues whose status is unknown so we can remove them from the Active Leagues table. Hmlarson (talk) 05:19, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
