Re: Teahouse barnstar!

edit

Thank you, Heather. I'm still not confident in the role of host. I keep getting into mischief while doing Teahouse things like sending invites. I check a new user's contribs to try to make my invites personal. Found an odd pattern and ended up embroiled in my first SockPuppet investigation. I agonized over my failure to assume good faith, especially after a sarcastic comment in the SPI from a new user that I accused. Discovering that I was right was a relief.

I have to limit my Teahouse time. Checked my stat's: 47% in user_talk (sending invites and such) and WP (Teahouse) but down to only 31% in articles. I'm not leaving or even taking a break, not when I get to read things like:

{quote|Thank you for the encouragement and offer to review the article I will write. Thinking my tiny contributions were deleted against the policy, without a chance for me to explain beforehand, I lost some confidence in contributing to Wikipedia. The advice and support from you and some of the wikipedians nevertheless helped restore some confidence in Wikipedia. I may contribute to other articles first but I definitely will return to the article on education controversy, perhaps before Hong Kong schools go strike again after protesting against the Tiananmen Square Massacre 23 years ago. Please add that page to your watch list and stay tuned. :)--Jabo-er (talk) 16:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)}

Automated Teahouse greeting system

edit

We need to establish an automated greeting system where we can refer users to you to be greeted with Teahouse's greeting message. I was thinking of maybe Category:Wikipedians to be greeted by WikiProject Teahouse? We just get too many newbies at WP:AFC with too many questions and we need to offload teaching them Wikipedia's intracies to someone else so that we can focus on the AFC backlog. What do you think? Do you think a bot can greet people listed at the aforementioned category and remove them from it once they have been greeted? —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 20:40, 7 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Issue V - January 2013
Project news summary
From the editor

Hello again from the Help Project!

In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already.

Another important and frequently used help page, Wikipedia:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages.

In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Wikipedia:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch.

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Help in contributing new articles

edit

Hi Heather,

I hope you're fine there. I'd like to ask for some assistance in my succeeding contributions to Wikipedia. In particular, I'd like to know how can I deal correctly with the REDIRECT notice in my SANDBOX, redirecting it to my 1st article, Paul Tyma (who'm I find very interesting to write about because of his innovative contributions to computer technology). Is there a proper workaround to this? I've research the many Wikipedia HELP pages but can't seem to find a definitive answer. Although I know now that I can directly contribute articles, I'm just very anxious if I'll be breaking some rules if I make some steps that I'm not sure of. For the time being, I'll contribute again using the Article Wizard system. I'm looking forward to your much needed response. Thanks and best regards. Word.Farmer02 (talk) 06:36, 29 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Heather. Thank you very much for the response, it really helped me a lot in understanding how the process goes (and I will likely raise some more queries when I encounter other similar concerns). Once I get to have more free time from my work, I will likely focus on contributing more articles as well as edit/copy-edit those that require some much-needed enhancements. Best regards. Word.Farmer02 (talk) 04:22, 4 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Heather. I'd like to ask for some help in my second contribution Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Face lift dentistry which unfortunately was declined by an already non-existent user Schenka, with this comment: I'm not sure if Face lift Dentistry in itself is worthy of a separate article from Cosmetic_dentistry but this article as written clearly sounds like an advert for Dr. Sam Muslin. Since the procedure seems to be patented and trademarked by him, I suppose it might always be the case. If so, the references section must be improved to indicate the notability of this trademarked procedure. - Is it normal for a user to decline an article for creation, then suddenly cease existing from being a user? I do find that dubious, if not irregular. I just came across Face Lift Dentistry on TV and the Internet and got so interested with it, which prompted me to research and write on that article. And it's far from being an advertisement as I've tried very hard to secure reliable sources, including the actual US Patent records of the said procedure. Why should it be incorporated with Cosmetic_dentistry when I have also discussed the significant differences between the two? I do hope you can help explain to me further if indeed Schenka is in the side of reason, and why did he just disappear after declining my considerably-researched and written piece. And if I can still "save" that article, what must I do? Nonetheless, I'll continue contribute new articles and edits to Wikipedia. Hoping for the best. Cheers. Word.Farmer02 (talk) 07:41, 13 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Teahouse talk

edit

Hi Heather, Thanks for you input on the thread about asking a newbie who his/her employee is. I am happy to discuss with you any further points you have, either here or on the Teahouse talk page. I tried to move the conversation to the Teahouse talk page because I didn't think that the Questionairre page was the best place for a policy discussion but I'll defer to you on that since you have much more experience at Teahouse than I do. Best, --KeithbobTalk 15:21, 15 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your recent revision at the Teahouse front page.

edit

Much respect to you as the main technogeek that works on the Teahouse pages themselves, but it is my personal feeling that Moxy's revision may have been half right. Blue is the traditional color for links, right? And that is a link, right? So how about making the boldface "Questions" blue and leaving the rest black? Unless my mouse went over that sentence, I would not suspect that it was a link! Just sayin....I leave the graphic folks to get the graphics as they should be, as I haven't enough technical knowledge to be of much help in implementing any changes. Be well, Heather, and happy belated Valentine's Day. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:04, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gtwfan! Here is the message I left for Moxy regarding this dif. The thing about that line is that it is not necessary as a link, it is redundant to the one below which has the icon and is underlined. Someone wanted that line to to be clickable as well, but we didn't want to make another visual link choice (there are already too many on that page). So, it's not as obvious as blue, but it's not the only link in that direction. Thanks for sharing your opinion, I appreciate it :) heather walls (talk) 06:44, 16 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
The main reason it was changed is because at the help desk people were asking what the page was for (as they saw no visible link to click on - or the ones they found did not take them to a page to ask questions) (WP:link color). As for the short cuts - they were added because people are coming to the help desk not being able to find there way back to the teahouse were they had originally posted a question - informing them them all they have to do to get back to the page is type WP:TH I believe is useful. That said its not a big problem only a few post a week of this nature. All this is not s big deal to me - the page does work as intended - you have done a great job. On a side note I have created Wikipedia:Help index as we were getting complaint after complaint by our students about help pages begin all over the place with no central disruptive directory. Its simply amazing how many help pages there are - overwhelming for most to find the right information, Moxy (talk) 20:40, 19 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proof of concept (borrowing heavily from your Teahouse/host code):

Feedback, design tweaks welcome. I'm not sure how to get rid of the black bars or make the badges align left rather than hold spaces. If this works, we could encourage users to display the badges they've earned on their userpages, similar to the way we're doing on their profiles. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 18:54, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Heather. I see you got one of those special first birthday badges too. somehow it is on your host profile, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to add it to mine. I don't appear to have a field for it. can you help? Gtwfan52 (talk) 10:55, 12 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help build the visual language of Wikipedia at the first ever Wikimedia Foundation/Noun Project Iconathon

The Wikimedia Foundation is partnering up with the Noun Project to run the first-ever Wikipedia Iconathon on April 6th at WMF headquarters, and you're invited!

What is an Iconathon: An iconathon is a co-design process where Wikimedia staff, the user community, and a few graphic designers collaboratively discuss what symbols could best represent a concept for an icon – for example, what's the best icon for New Editor, Revert or Oversight? Sketches will be converted into high fidelity icons by Noun Project graphic designers, and will be released under a free license for use by anyone on the Internet. Help build the free encyclopedia icon set that anyone in the world can share and reuse!

Logistics: The event runs from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on April 6th at the Wikimedia Foundation office in San Francisco. Follow the signs at the door! We'll have plenty of paper and pens/pencils for sketching.

How to sign up: Please register here using the code 'wiki'

If you're going to edit FAGS_(candy)...

edit

At least make it searchable. It's existed since 1943!
I tried "Fags candy" and it didn't redirect to FADS. Been a while since I've edited on wiki.
You likely know the search tricks better than I recall! :)
(At least "FAGS" redirects to "fag" which leads to the candy...)

As a kid I was one of the many in the P.C skirmish, ended up eating both FAGS and FADS in the end!

Oh and if you think this is facepalming due to time and language evolution,
wait until you see COON (cheese), Redskins (candy) and Golden Gaytime (ice cream)!
(All of which still sell! Most Aussies look at the nicer definition with these names.
Only the hateful few see the horrid ways to twist the name.
Although I can't excuse Redskins for having a Native American on wrappers. Wonka finally removed him after buying the company thankfully!)

Teahouse guests

edit

Hi Heather, You might want to take a look at the Teahouse guest page because there's something funny going on at the bottom. ~ Anastasia (talk) 16:19, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't see the problem at the bottom. I am curious why the div is wrapped around the {{WP:Teahouse/Host navigation}} instead of inside the actual template itself (which makes more sense to me). I did notice an issue on that page that with "Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures, to be relative to local time. (documentation)" selected in the "Appearance" section of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets, the left and right columns overlap each other. Technical 13 (talk) 16:59, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
File:Teahouse Guest page overlap issue as seen by Technical 13.png
Overlap of columns boxed in red with arrows.
I fixed the issue that Missionedit is speaking of :) heather walls (talk) 17:02, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I suppose the div is around the template so that the template can have the chance of being seen/used without the special script if it needs to be used somewhere else. It doesn't bother me to have it outside of the template, and helps to explain how it works a little. heather walls (talk) 17:05, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
As for the time thing, I'm sorry I can't figure out what you are talking about. heather walls (talk) 17:07, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
See the image I just uploaded. :) Technical 13 (talk) 17:17, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Do you mean you set a special setting that changes the look of timestamps and that means that they overlap? Interesting to know! I don't have time to fix it at the moment, but if I come across some spare time I'll look into it. Thanks for the screenshot. heather walls (talk) 17:32, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there is a gadget that changes the look of timestamps and it is making the length of the timestamps longer forcing them out of their "normal" permitable area causing an overlapping. I just took a look at the templates that create that page and I can't fix it without bot access. Wikipedia:Teahouse/Guest is going to have to be modified so that it includes the timestamp inside of it instead of placing on the left/right page. Wikipedia:Teahouse/Guest_profile will also have to be modified to add it as an argument for the template instead of after the template. Then, it can be formatted inside the template so that the div has an allocated amount of width: 248px;..... Ahh... I'll need to look this over some more... There are a lot of things that don't make sense to me about the current structure of the templates, and I'm betting that is why there are "issues" arising from them. Would you be offended if I copied all of the templates to a section in my userspace to work on them and see what I can do? Technical 13 (talk) 17:58, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Feel free to copy them to look at them. I'd much prefer you not make any changes to the templates the Teahouse pages use without discussing it with me and J-Mo (some things are the way they are because of his bots). heather walls (talk) 18:03, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, the edits I need to make to seem logical to me and work are going to be partly T&E and I would rather not do that to the actual templates, hence my thoughts to do it in my user space.   Technical 13 (talk) 18:11, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

hey y'all. Changing the way the timestamp is displayed shouldn't affect HostBot. The timestamps are set during the profile creation workflow, which just uses (a big ol' mess of) template calls. Fortunately as Heather mentioned the timestamps only break the layout when the user viewing the page has the Comments on local time gadget enabled, so most users won't see the funny bug you noticed. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:15, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Just trying this code out, which Technical worked out in WikiLove. It looks clean to me but I'm not sure about the right-aligned message and signature, which pulls the eye away from the badge text. What do you think??

That right align is in the badge template and can be easily moved to be centered or left aligned, my purpose for doing it that was was to the message wouldn't detract from the badge itself by being out of default eyesight. Regardless where you think the message should be, I think the signature should stay on that side at least as it is the last thing in the box and "closes" it best IMHO. Technical 13 (talk) 16:24, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

+ It looks good when there is only 1 line of text... It looks kinds of crappy when it is a line and a half, although, I think if I added a cell/div (idr if that template uses a table or divs) to make the message 50-66% of the overall width it would look good as multiple lines. I'll play with that part of it in the sandbox tonight. Technical 13 (talk) 17:05, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
+ Okay, per Ocaasi's suggestion, I played with the whitespace surrounding the message and signature and alignments of both elements and above is what I found to be the most appealing to me. What do you think? Technical 13 (talk) 17:13, 25 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation.

It has been suggested to send a team from Wikipedia/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Wikipedia's help.

There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on.

Teahouse Small Badges

edit

Due to my self-perceived success with the modification to the large template, I've decided to tackle adding the ability to specify a number of badges received in the Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Small template and have set up a series of -sandbox templates (Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Small-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Answer-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Easter egg-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Host-sandbox, Wikipedia:Teahouse/Badge/Question-sandbox) and have been testing the changes on Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host landing#Technical 13. For some reason, setting the value of badges to "yes" or "1" changes the placement of the badge. Also, the easter-egg badge seems smaller to me, and I'm not sure why. I know you are familiar with some of this coding stuff, so I figured I'd have you look at it and see if you can offer some improvements. I'm also asking Soni, Writ, Sarah, and Ocaasi to take a peek at it as well and see if we can't get it working right. Thanks. Technical 13 (talk) 22:22, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

(/me talkpage stalker). Let's hold off on any changes to the live badge templates for now. Teahouse Badges are currently a pilot project and we're actively gathering data on who gets what badge & when, so we can evaluate whether giving people badges makes them fitter/happier/more productive/etc. Any changes to the badge templates could affect our ability to track them, or introduce bias into our data. Once the pilot is over, though, we would welcome your input on next steps. Perhaps we can make a Teahouse Badge Task Force after the pilot, for discussing and implementing Badges 2.0. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 22:59, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have no problem on holding of on making the changes live. I knew the change was going to be something that was going to take a little time in between revisions which is why I opted for the -sandbox approach. Feel free to take a look at what I've started and if you can get the small badges properly lined up and the numbers to show up correctly over the images, that would be great. I'm assuming there is a bot gathering data on how many of each badge people are getting? It would be cool if that could be modified after your data is gathered so that it could work in coordination with the template changes I've been working on to display how many of each badge each of us has gotten on the Host landing page. :) Technical 13 (talk) 23:05, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed! I'd love to get HostBot more involved in the badge display. Right now all it's doing is updating a daily report of badges awarded, but we've talked about implementing a more leaderboard-style approach as well. Do you happen to program in Python? We could collaborate on some code sometime. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:23, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hey, I just found WP:Village pump (technical)#Temporarily disabling WikiLove on English Wikipedia and thought it might be of interest to you. Should we post some kind of notice on the Teahouse page someplace? How would we go about doing that, is there a template designed for host notices? I've looked at trying to learn Python, but have found the resources on learning it to be slim. I'll probably take another crack at it sometime, but like my host profile says, I'm pretty logical and I catch on quick. That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to peeking at the code, I've found that sometimes a non-language specific eye can pick up on subtleties and ask questions that would otherwise be overlooked. I asked this question and you disagreed with my desire to go back to older archives. To you a search function is enough, but I'd like to have a link to older archives.

I created a list of links to the Teahouse archives but it has been reverted. I'm not sure where to store it. But you can go back to the history to see how it might look.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:06, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Actually, since these are sandboxes, I suppose I can change it. Here is the link to the older archive, and here is the archive itself.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:26, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) I don't see where Heather disagreed with you, she simply asked you to clarify what your thought was. I am personally confused by this as well and do not yet see any clarification. Also, of note, is a discussion Wikipedia talk:Teahouse/Host lounge#Archive navigation which I am wondering if is relevant to your question. If that is the case, I intend on going through with AWB and updating all of the old archives to use the more advanced template by the end of this week. Technical 13 (talk) 19:24, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
To quote Heather, "I don't think we need to link to every archive." I said that we should. I don't know what there is to clarify. If you look at what I just did, you have a link to older archives, and then the older archives themselves. Each two-digit number represents a section of the archives.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:29, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah... I agree that it would be too long and confusing to new editors on the THQ page itself; although, if there was consensus, I wouldn't be opposed to adding it to the individual archive pages themselves in the big dead white space next to the TOC when I go through and update the talk page header template, which I'll put on hold pending a discussion of this. That being said, I would move this discussion to the host lounge for everyone to discuss it and just leave a note here for Heather saying that a discussion originally placed for them was moved to get a consensus at the the suggestion of me on the host lounge talk page. Technical 13 (talk) 19:43, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I didn't even know this was going on there. I was in Archive 10the current Teahouse and saw a link to the Teahouse talk page and was reminded my suggestion had probably been archived. It was, and only Heather had responded.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:48, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey ya'll :). I think that having every numbered archive on the question page is overkill. The first priority of WP:Teahouse/Questions is the very new users and we want them to ask their question, not search an archive. We want to minimize access to archives on that page (left alone, I would have less), which I know probably goes against the instincts of experienced Wikipedians. I do think that using that box on the archive pages themselves is a great idea. Thanks for all of your efforts! heather walls (talk) 23:25, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'll add it to all of the archive pages as a transcluded header. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps we should format up a special teahouse archive header incorporating all of {{Automatic archive navigator}}, the complete archive list box and a specially formated TOC? I'll mention it on the host lounge page. Technical 13 (talk) 23:31, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to discuss the Teahouse model/structure and your thoughts on the possibility of using such structure and basic model for Wikipedia:Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. Over the last few months DR/N has been attempting to adjust to user concerns/complaints about the formality and structure of the Dispute Resolution process. As you may know, User:Steven Zhang has put in a great deal of work in establishing the DR/N and its original WikiProject. Over time, the original structure of DR/N was changed. In order to address many of the concerns, the formality of DR/N is being lowered back into the informal and non binding mediation forum it was and still is intended for.

One of the ideas that Steven and many of the DR/N volunteers (at least I hope) has taken to heart is the idea of being gentle and polite and having a friendly location to discuss the dispute within the framework of Wikipedia policy and guidelines. This is what I believe to be the basic idea of the "Teahouse". I also suggested that, perhaps the volunteers could personalize themselves more as human beings and individuals (that personality behind the username) by creating a Volunteer landing page similar to that of the Teahouse Host Landing, where volunteers add themselves to our list through his process, creating a small bio about themselves at the same time for editors to look through and see the editors assisting at DR/N. The Teahouse model seems to be, the very best choice and direction to take DR/N. I am not sure if I have already mentioned this before to you or not, but we would like to look further into the more technical logistics of function, mark-up and where it may just be possible to copy almost verbatim any code and text that would be transferable/usable with attribution. I am not Wikignome, but I manage. I wanted to be sure and get your thoughts (or further thoughts if I did mention this already) as I attempt to put everything together. I may have already created a page somewhere. Need to look.--Amadscientist (talk) 18:46, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Vista Equity Partners

edit

The article Vista Equity Partners has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability is not clear, not sufficiently improved since "db-spam" speedy-deletion was declined.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:38, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I realize you didn't write this article, but you did make substantial contributions to it about a year ago. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 02:39, 11 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

redirect needs creating, motto needs qualification

edit

Hello, I picked you from the list over at WP:RETENTION at random, well, okay, not really at random, I'm jealous you are 42 on there, which is very random, but not pseudo-random, if you catch my drift.

I noticed it is not possible to use wp:retention which methinks sticks out less than WP:RETENTION, because nobody has created the necessary redirect for lowercase yet. The redirect is already there for wp:teahouse which works fine and send the clicking-user over to WP:TEAHOUSE. Anyhoo, I tried to create the redirect-page, but apparently the-encyclopedia-anyone-can-edit is not applicable on project pages, which is a shame. Besides having 42, and a registered uid, and a shiny spinning thing, you also have a WMF paystub, so presumably you *can* create the redirect. Please click here, wp:retention, and then paste in this magic incantation:

#REDIRECT [[WP:RETENTION]]

Thanks for improving wikipedia, see you around. p.s. If you don't have time, no problem, ping my talkpage and I'll take care of it. 74.192.84.101 (talk) 15:24, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Heather.

Seeing as you're a talented designer, and I'm a clumsy ox, I was wondering if you could do something for a fellow Teahouse host.

Could you design a barnstar for me that I'd like to create to award to those who make positive contributions to Cleveland related articles?

I was thinking just incorporating the Indians' "C" logo ( ) into the typical wiki barnstar.

If you could do this for me, I'd be much obliged, and I'll make sure to award you the first one as a token of thanks.

Adding Teahouse badges to the Twinkle interface.

As someone who quite regularly uses Twinkle, and as a Teahouse host as well, I was wondering if it might speed things up if we could add all the Teahouse badges to the Twinkle interface. After all, they have all manner of barnstars and bits as well. Let me know what you think. --13:16, 12 June 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skamecrazy123 (talkcontribs)

  • (talk page stalker) We've already added them to the WikiLove interface, to access this, you just need to have Preferences → Editing → Enable showing appreciation for other users with the WikiLove tab checked, and add to your common.js (where all of your existing Teahouse scripts are) the following line of code:
    importScript( 'User:Ocaasi/WikiLoveinstallscript.js' );// [[User:Ocaasi/WikiLoveinstallscript.js]]

Will this work for you? If not, I could "probably" help you put together a custom list for Twinkle. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 14:22, 12 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Heatherawalls. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).Reply

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Please copy and share this on other talk pages. We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather at the Wikimedia Foundation lounge to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.

We will have no meaty agenda this month, but we will allow a brief period for:

  • Open mic for anybody who attended WikiConference North America 2016 in San Diego last week and wants to share their takeaway
  • Question & answer
  • Open mic for announcements
  • Maybe a focus on some topical election article editing with Ben?

Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, a stool or counter and do your own thing.

Please note: You should register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on the I.D. part. This also helps us figure out how much food and drink to bring in! Feel free to stop by even if only to say a quick hello, but you might have to give us a last minute call if you forget to RSVP. Also, don't be shy about hitting us up if you have thoughts on future speakers or wiki-related activities.

For further details, please see: Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon, October 2016.

PS: Mark your calendars ahead now for the 3rd Wednesday in November, the 30th (the week after Thanksgiving), at 6 p.m. when our WikiSalon will host a super awesome top secret mystery guest mingling in our midst. We will announce specifics at the upcoming WikiSalon.

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

edit

Hello Heatherawalls,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I notice you are active in activities related to project page and project talk page, so I wonder if I could invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you, Bowen

Please participate to the talk pages consultation

edit

Hello

Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.

We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.

We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Heatherawalls, well, I suggest updating your social media pages (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Social_media) if Aubrie is no longer in charge. Anyone looking for the Twitter Feed responsible is pointed to her. It came to my attention because I was questioning how it is decided what comes into the Twitter Feed - I was pretty surprised seeing the 2021 Myanmar Protest Tweet while the article was heavily edited, semi-protected and the nomination for being published on the homepage on hold. Teahouse logo: Re-licensing request

edit

Hi Heatherawalls, thank you very much for creating the Teahouse's logo, WP_teahouse_logo.png. The image's license currently requires attribution wherever the logo is used. If this is intentional, no worries. However, you may like to donate the image to the public domain by adding {{pd-self}} and/or {{CC0}} to the image's description page. If you do so, the people at the Teahouse can use the logo in the header of the page without having to worry about attribution and licensing. Thank you very much in advance and best regards, ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:14, 16 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi @ToBeFree: Oh yeah, I guess I could! I'm happy to. heather walls (talk) 05:25, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Severfield - Issue tags

edit

Hi,

Back in 2012 you added some issue tags to Severfield. The tags looked like they were appropriate to what the authors did then. I have had a go at some fixes and just wanted to let you know in case you have comments before I look at removing the issue tags. Many thanks. Ed1964 (talk) 11:15, 28 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to Local Wikimania Event in San Francisco this Friday

edit

Hi!

Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). You will have to register in advance, but we would love to see more people from the WikiSalon community participate! For more information and registration, please check out meta:Wikimania 2022/San Francisco Meetup.

The event will involve hacking, teaching, learning, and celebrating and we'll have snacks. We will have the opportunity to watch live sessions at Wikimania together in the afternoon. The rest of the day we'll have opportunity to participate in the hackathon, and we may have some on-demand workshops/learning sessions.

In case we run out of space, it's first-come-first-serve so let us know soon! Hope to see you there.
